What do I do to my mixes? Try not to mess them up! ha ha. I have a Wes Audio Prometheus I like on my 2 buss and it has stereo/dual mono/mid side modes. I'll have to try this! I also like running mixes through my Otari mx 50 50 with Ampex 406!

I put every channel through the Brainworx SSL 4000e strip and adjust the THD screw to taste. This is a way of controlling how hard you are pushing the console in each instance. Sometimes I take all the THD out. A piano for instance. Sometimes I crank it all the way. This work particularly well on lead guitars.

But, a lot of plugins have m/s. So...How do you "stack" m/s plugins on busses and maybe the mix bus. ? Thats my big Q. Just trying to work it out...
@glendon63673 жыл бұрын
I found a limiter plug-in the other day that brought my previously mastered track (alternative punk/rock) to a place that sounded much more fun to the ear. The drums sounded fatter/more chaotic, guitar sounded more intense and vocals slightly improved. Fooled around for an hour, rendered it and the next day it did not sound as good as I thought. It's interesting what your mind/ears can do while in the moment and had I backed off 15% it probably would have been great. Is there such a thing as "mastering" tracks different depending on their genre or is it purely personal preference?

I think the subtlety is key here. M/S processing can really mess up the way your mix folds to mono, which a lot of people don't necessarily think about.
@tone99303 жыл бұрын
Always check your mix in mono even with m/s indeed.
@austinhudson69433 жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity. The way most people listen to music nowadays is in stereo. Why would the track's conversion to mono be important when it comes to the last stage on the stereo bus. Are you saying it may cause phasing issues or something?
@rjhelms3 жыл бұрын
@@austinhudson6943 There are lots of circumstances where people listen to music in mono these days: listening on phone speakers, over a nightclub PA, even listening on a home stereo but nowhere near the "sweet spot". I wouldn't be surprised if more people actually listen to music in mono today than did 15 years ago.
@austinhudson69433 жыл бұрын
@@rjhelms and would it cause phase issues not routinely checking mono compatibility and thats the main reason for it or are their additional reasons?
@rjhelms3 жыл бұрын
@@austinhudson6943 Yeah, phase issues are the biggest issue, but even if it's not an "issue" per se things might not collapse to mono how you expect. If your mix has lots of space because of panning and stereo processing, it might end up muddy and crowded in mono. With M/S, it's especially important because (as the name implies) the side channel entirely disappears when you listen in mono. So if you use the technique from this video, for example, all that comes through is the bass boost - the treble boost is entirely lost. That might be fine, but there's only one way to be sure!
