Good evening from the UK... At the moment I'm in the exploration stage... despite how long I've been doing this, I just used to tough it out and go 'commando', so to speak! Mostly because I lack the understanding and I didn't just want to rely on 'Plugins' to sound good... or at least better! Recently though, having jumped headfirst into the academy, I'm becoming more confident in trying out stuff... nothing major, 'Enverb' for some gated toms recently, 'Stereo Spread' cos' I'm basically lazy and it's helping the tracks sound more dynamic... out of stock stuff, have used 'Fresh Air' which is subtle but nice and 'Drip'... I know 😉... but it does actually add some much needed pizzazz, or seasoning if you like? My biggest discovery is 'Output'... subscribed to 'Arcade' which is a pretty cool repository for samples and is already changing my style and sound! I've said enough!! 😎👍

@Thoracius2 жыл бұрын
It's a very warm chorus. Like nothing-above-6k on the modulated signal warm. The hass will retain your crispy higher harmonics but make them stereo. The TAL will keep your highs centered and create stereo out of the low-mids/mids. The TAL chorus sounds great, but if you want to create space for something in the center, it's good to be aware of the frequencies involved.

Over the top low end, haha, I suspect that my mixes are often that. Deadmau5 said that too much low end will sound like a horrible roar and rumble in big club speakers. And someone said that clubs often use mono. On the other hand many people listen on much tinier systems than that and always in stereo.

Your videos are DA BOMB. My top bass plugins : 1) UAD LITTLE LABS VOICE OF GOD Nothing beats the warm big sound for a FAT 35-45hz sub. Perfect to enhance kicks too... So versatile, you can use to enhance any source really, from 3-500 Hz and it just sounds so much warmer and bigger than anything else. 2) BOZ DIGITAL LABS BARK OF DOG (FREE) A bit like RBASS but I prefer the sound and it's FREE!! Nice for kick and sub. I personally never got on with Vitamin. Sounded harsh on everything to me imo. Thanks so much for all your brilliant videos! Always so articulate.

I've been finding PS22 Split from Waves audio a great version of the hass effect. I recently mixed a live recording of a rock trio and used PS22 to push the distortion gtr to the sides to make room for the screaming vocals down the middle. Worked a treat. I've used a lot of mono to stereo spreader effects and PS22 is my fav.

Thanks Marc for this one. What I learned most from this video was a tiny detail when demonstrating your use of Vitamin. While soloing the lowest frequency range band you were still listening for clarity between instruments. (Kick, Bass, Synth) This was very helpful in finding a more precise definition of tonal centers for each instrument, all while exploring in the “mudd” range . It was a Captain Obvious moment for me on how to keep using critical listening within a given range instead of hearing just the range as a whole. Dive deeper.

Great video - Thank you! As a German native speaker I had to laugh about the title insert "Hass Effekt"... the Haas Effect is the pseudo-acoustic effect named after Herbert Haas. "Hass" is the German word for "hate". Not sure what the "Hass Effect" is, perhaps it's something about our history...

Everytime you said thats too much , I was like thats the sweet spot (LOL) im also a fan of low low end, what it does the harmonic series for the rest of the spectrum s amazing, half my mix is getting the right amounts of extended lows and tamed low mids. The mids + high mids just sit in the mix so much better once this investment in the mix is made.

this was great! my first experience with the idea of HAAS on bass was from the David Moulton Audio Lectures like...25 years ago when you had to order the discs from Mix Magazine because there was no "online" ordering back then hahaha...everyone would look at me weird when I would use the HAAS effect on bass (I always high passed the effect to keep the mono low end clean) but in the end when I'd A/B it...they'd always choose the effected version...cool to see it showing up again 🙂

While I also like RBass. I’ve realized, after lots of testing, that MaxxBass does a better job at retaining sub-information while adding harmonics. You need to mess with all the parameters to dial it in, which is part of the secret- you have more control than RBass Therefore, I always use Maxxbass over RBass.

@@ravenconacher Freq that are so slow that compressors may latch onto them with slow release times need to be treated carefully. Amazing as usual, Marc! If it wasn't because of the widely used "mono-summing" smartphones and Bluetooth speakers I would not say this: Don't you worry about phase issues when playing with short delays? When I try to something like this, I only use a mono-compatible stereo tool like Stage One (Leapwing). It's a game-changer for sure. See what you think! I have used Rbass for years and years, but now another Leapwing plugin has taken over now: Rootone. The results are incredible. And about Vitamin, it's always (last) in my mix bus, right before the mastering chain. I love that it uses parallel processing. I don't know what the "Punch" fader exactly does under the hood (magic!), but I noticed it helps recover the transients (especially on drums) that get a little tamed even with (previous) mix compression, I always keep the value between 1 and 2.5. I also use Vitamin to automate stereo width changes throughout the song, playing with different bands. It's my secret sauce! Oh, and a quick one: When I find that the lower root notes of drums are fighting (overlapping) between each other and/or with the bass, I sometimes use Waves Torque to change the tunning in one of them. Sound very natural and helps you "move" things in the FQ Spectrum. An example: Kick goes down a little 60hz to 50hz (and 120 to 100), Floor tom fundamental up to 80hz from 70hz, Snare stays at around 120Hz, and so on. After this, the bass travels up and down smoothly, and the mix low end gets some more space to breathe, even if adding compression.
@marcdanielnelson3173 жыл бұрын
havent checked a mix in mono in over 5 years. I dont do a lot of stereo spreading.. but when i do its on something that is a little less important. MOST listeners are on headphones or their car.. So Stereo tricks do help.. As you see, the lo end is for the center bass. and if there is a synth part that needs to expand the chorus or something then i do that effect. never been told by mastering or after that its a problem.. Have fun!
