Such a good advice. I spent so long getting things to sit in EQ, thinking it's a mixing frequency spectrum. Turns out spreading things out over time is crucial, and it's exactly what the pros do when you start analyzing popular tracks. The trick is to guide the listener, control when each part of the track gets to be in the spotlight. Not many focus on this, so excellent excellent guide! ✌️

I’m into heavier forms of electronic and bass music production, but I really appreciate what you do, and how clearly you explain these concepts. You are right, valuable across all genres. I would really love an in depth look at how to fully utilize a powerful limiter like pro-L 2 whether it be part of a processing chain or a mix bus. I feel like I’m barely scratching the surface of what it can do and how it can benefit me

I have tried to explain this so many times to myself, and this is epic! Actually you can make make the "graph" with even more dimensions if you didg in deep. I mean you have 3D in mono but if you think about it then you have another "dimension" Mid and side as well, witch gives you 3x 3D. Left side; Mid; Right side. Thank you to couch us! You're the best! ✊

Layering isn't bad, bad layering is bad. Obviously if you just put two sounds with the same characteristics on top of eachother it will clutter the mix, but that is really not a case against good layering, that will give that sounds more depth, dynamics and character.

I realised that always watching a DAW scroll left to right, we sort of get this distorted sense of sound. Sounds are coming towards and away from you (with varying degrees of panning.) But if you close your eyes and just listen to a kick drum for example, its fun to retrain your brain to look at sounds straight ahead if that make sense. The click arrives first and shortly after the bass frequencies.

I wouldn't dicourage people too much from layering sounds. It can be crucial to layer a few sounds to make a unique new one but it has to make sense and be coherent together, but also mixed well together where you'd EQ out all the unnecessary frequencies from each and then you can pull off many layers depending on the situation. Just make sure each layer makes sense and makes a difference and, if possible, sit in different frequency ranges. Oh and also don't confuse layers with individual instruments doing different things, having more than 2 instruments all playing different melodies can ruin ur composition real fast.

I have to keep reminding myself to do this … less is more. I’ve found a trick that works for me is to play the whole song in mono… if I can’t hear a certain part at all then it means I should either adjust the EQ on that track or perhaps consider getting rid of that part all together.

Having a good arrangement is just as important to mixing as level setting and EQ! If you wanted to hear both then as you said it would most likely be an EQ job.
