I'm 230lbs and my, new to me, 2014 KTM 150sx smoker is a lot of bike. after riding smokers and strokers I feel there's something about the feel, sound and power delivery of a two stroke that invites you to step out of your comfort zone and push it even without you realizing the influence.

I'm 47 and 230lbs and I bought a 2006 YZ144 last year because I wanted to have fun at my local motocross track. I was very worried about it having come from a 450f and 250 two-strokes... but man did I have a freaking blast on that bike last season. I felt like a freaking champ on it. So light and nimble and exciting to ride. It takes a lot more effort to go fast but gees it's exciting! So many people telling me I'd regret it because it's too small of a bike for my size... they have no clue what they're talking about. This bike hauls me around easily and if I push hard I can keep up to most anyone at the track until I tire out. Jumping it has been fantastic, too. Love it so much.

I suspect the reason you're faster on the 2 smokes is that you ride the 4 strokes like a 2, engine breaking it much stronger on a 4 and the way you ride (giving a bleep of gas, freewheeling, bleep freewheeling, etc...) the 4 strokes will slow you down a lot unless you keep some gas going or clutch, i think you'd be much faster on the Sherco (than on the KT) if you didn't ride it like a 2 stroke.
@dcfilms3477 жыл бұрын
romteb He should be faster if he rides it like a two stroke. Wide open!!!

Slow you down unless you clutch or stay on the gas? I suspect you don't have much experience riding a 4 stroke fast.
@romteb7 жыл бұрын
I didn't say that the 4 stroke is better than the 2 stroke, i actually prefer 2 strokes calm down fanboys, but the geometry of the Sherco and the better traction of the rear wheel plus the smooth power should make it faster in this very specific twisty trail than the KTM whose superior power isn't of much use there and the understering front a nuisance, overall i would much rather have the 2 stroke if i needed to be fast on a diverse terrain enduro.

My problem is now I'm thinking of selling my 350 XC-F and getting the Sherco!..Thanks for keeping things real. This video proves that both 2t and 4t riders can ride what they love and still have respect for one another.

it's very difficult to have a cut and dry answer to this debate . Kyle is correct it's all personal preference and Riding style / type of terrain/ race or play / skill level plays a big part new riders tend to feel safer on a 4 stroke .At the end of the day just have fun on what ever you ride

Great video. I think the one thing that you didn't comment on is effort. On the sherco portion of the video you keep, what sounds like, an easy conversational tone and speech pattern. On the KTM side of the video you are speaking in broken sentences to catch your breath. Did you feel a difference in the effort on riding both bikes? I can ride my Sherco for 50 miles and NOT feel completely blasted while on my 2 stroke I feel worn out. I don't know if it is a 4T versus 2T thing. Sure I like to be fast but I also like getting home from a ride and having enough energy left for honey do's around the house.
@ClayGGOR7 жыл бұрын
Good point. One thing I hear a lot from racers is that are definitely faster at the end of the race on the Sherco because it doesn't tire them out as much.
@thanksskeletor48127 жыл бұрын
Clay Stuckey yes I can confirm that the shercos are super good at working for you instead of against you. I've owned ktm's shercos and betas and the sherco bikes have been so far the smoothest and therefore fastest bikes in the tight sections, but to each there own. all fantastic machines.
@heinrichvonkekelnazi3937 жыл бұрын
Papa J NM 2 strokes always take a lot more work to ride, as you have to keep the engine high in the rpm to keep going, which means your constantly squeezing peak power out of it, which then means you need to put more effort into controlling the bike.

One editing tip I want to make for your future videos like this is try panning the audio to the speaker that matches the bike you are on. Even though you turned up the volume on the KTM side, it is still hard to focus more on it with the other audio going. By panning the audio to the far sides, with headphones on you can just take one or the other out and have clear audio for both bikes at the same time. For the comparison, the big difference I have noticed for making up time could be in the motors. The four strokes have a much stronger engine break than the two strokes when letting off the throttle which can slow you down without really realizing it. The two stroke glides more into corners and the best way to replicate that on four strokes is to have the clutch pulled in. That could be what's making the difference in this side-by-side. It is hard to tell though.
@johnathanyinger7 жыл бұрын
It seems like the Sherco has too quick of steering, causing you to counterbalance as you turn. It is more noticeable on the Sherco than the KTM.

Did you control for other factors besides the bike? For instance, you rode the Sherco first, so how familiar were you with the trail? What about testing the Sherco 300 vs the Ktm 250 xc. A little more even on horsepower and I know you’ve said before that you are probably faster on the ktm 250 than the 300. Do you think the gap would be even larger on a more bike with a more manageable throttle for us non superhuman riders?

Not the right conditions for this test. I have a late model 300 XC-W and I rode a tight and fast forrest trail on it and then jumped on a 300 4T and that's where the 300 was shinning. I was much more confident with less power, thus quicker on the 4T
@Nonplused6 жыл бұрын
2 strokes are on the way out due to your friendly neighborhood EPA. For some reason they think a 250 cc engine has to have the same emissions ratios in parts per million as a 5 liter engine, even though it's getting way better mileage. The fact that a 2 stroke burns lubricant and doesn't always burn all the fuel makes this pretty hard to do. Eventually, there will be no more 2 strokes and we'll all be rev'ing the piss out of 4 strokes. I learned this by reading about all the troubles Kawasaki had putting fuel injection on the KLX 250. I learned that according to the rules, old designs were "grandfathered", so they couldn't get rid of the carburetor or they would have to move to current emissions standards, which even with fuel injection it took them a long time to figure out how to do. I understand the 2018 has it though. I don't mind the 4 strokes, but the two things I miss about 2 strokes is the joy of the power band and the ease of doing engine work. I suppose messing with the valve chain isn't the biggest deal in the world, but rebuilding the top end of a 2 stroke is so simple. Oh and the sound. 2 strokes sound awesome. A big 4 stroke sounds like someone is shooting a Gatling gun. Anyway, the simple fact is that when trail riding, most people don't use much of the available horsepower very often. It's not like on the track where horsepower and lightweight win races. For most people, rev'ing the piss out of a 4 stroke will get you along just as fast, and you'll have about or more horsepower than a 2 stroke that is turning at half the rpm, even at equal displacement. It's just if you actually need that extra 10 hp that the 2 stroke shines. I never do at my age, but if you like to climb steep hills or getting big air the 2 stroke is the superior machine at equal displacement. But at my age I'd just hurt myself. I do wish the government would just chill. A 250 2 stroke isn't killing the atmosphere. And when the 4 strokes valve seals go, they make just as much smoke. For a while, a lot more until the engine dies or gets rebuilt. I had a Honda XL650 for a while and the valve seals went. Holy freaking smoke batman! No 2 stroke could do that! Well I suppose it could if you mixed the fuel at 15:1.

could you do a review of all the gear you wear ? p.s love the videos man that 300 2 smoker kicks

Looks like Rabbit Valley or whatever they call the Utah side. It looked to me like you were stumbling a bit on the two stroke from riding the four stroke for a few weeks. Early on you were also riding the KTM in a lower hear than you were on the way back. I bought a 2017 300 XC and have only ridden it once back in October, in MN. I have been in France ever since. I noticed that, compared to the YZs that I have been riding for several years, that the KTM is gear pretty low. I click that thing in forth and leave it there most of the time. I leave my buds for dead.

Agree on the gearing, have a 2015 300 xc, but when I bought it used, the previous owner had put a -2 teeth smaller sprocket on back, but it works on trails, 3rd gear on single tracks most of the time.

The Sherco can turn as nimble as it wants, but your terminal speed between the turns is probably very similar and the two stroke jumps to that speed faster. At least that's what it looks like to me. I still prefer a four stroke for overall experience, smoother exhaust note, and fuel injection. Maybe the advent of FI on two strokes may change my mind, but I still don't like the ring of two stroke exhaust. Same thing with snowmobiles - I cant ride one with an obnoxious pipe very long, it just bugs me. This kind of comparison is the best, though, rather than just a finish line difference report. Good work.

In comparison, your narration on the KTM sounds a little choppy and out-of-breath. While on the Sherco, you are relaxed and conversational. If you ran a heart rate monitor and a Garmin, I suspect you're expending significantly more effort on the 2T. Over a period of 2 to 3 hours, I wonder how that would add up. I "feel" like I am faster on my 2T. And I think I am, but by just a slight amount. I expend much less energy on a 4T, both physically and mentally.

I would compare that sherco with a ktm 200 the wheel base would have been closer as well as the power

I don't know ask Adam why he suggested it. Maybe because both are available for purchase?

Well not everyone rides a new bike every bike bought new gets sold to someone right. And many people right now are looking for and buying new 16 model 2 strokes to avoid the Mikuni carbs and have something relatively new to ride through this time of change while ktm works it's way through a lot of changes.

Another thing to consider is the 80/20 rule that's 80%rider skill 20% bike. The truth is that as much as we like new bikes we can only buy about 20% of our skills.

torque is hige when riding trails like this, the ktm was faster purely because it accelerates harder and make bookoo torque.
