One thing that is rarely (if ever) addressed in the 2 vs 4 debate is the ease (and cost) of maintenance and repair. I'm not very handy with a wrench but I the 2 stroke is simple enough that there are very few repairs I can't handle. Any idiot can keep a 2 stroke running with little cost.

it's funny how the evolution of 2 and 4 strokes kinda switched places: vintage 2 stroke: tons of power up top, narrow powerband, useless non existent bottom end, not great trail bikes, only MX game in town, top ends changed like underwear vintage 4 strokes (water cooled): low end chuggers, long low to mid end, not much HP, better trail bikes, crap MX, last forever modern 2 stokes: enduro tuned bikes have great low end while still keeping some top end, great trail bikes, handicapped by displacement rules in MX, top ends can last up 300 hours sometimes modern 4 strokes: MX tuned bikes have tons of top end but sacrifice the low end (except for 450 cheater bikes), smaller displacement bikes are ticking time bombs if run hard. Generalities of course. But 2 strokes are more fun. Win!

I agree with the first statement but I'm not sure if i concurs with the second. ALOT of these kids havent ridden smokers since they were on 65's or 85's. The 4t is all they know all they've ridden, now they may be able to get on a smoker and go fast but honestly they should be able to; like you said their PAID to go fast. Villipoto has said on numerous occasions that he prefers the thumper as have countless other pros. Now is that just the sponsorships talking or truth who knows.

also depending on the discipline, mx they would probably prefer four strokes but if your talking enduro, they all ride 2 strokes except for the supercross/ endruocross mix of superenduro (is that what its called)?

I'm very sure factory support is available if a guy screams up through the amateurs on a ktm mx250. They have more total power but on todays layouts the higher average h.p. of the smokers just gets them around the track faster. Period

Dirt Bike Channel yeah they are rare man, I think in the USA there's a company selling a bike called the ATK intimidator what uses a maico 620cc or 700cc engine. I think I'm going to have to import one because I can only find old twin shock 490s on the uk at the moment.
@Fireballsocal8 жыл бұрын
OveRLoxD I looked into one when they were still made by ATK. ATK was quick to answer all my questions but I felt there wouldn't be very many made, probobly parts would be expensive and hard to get if even available. I went with a service honda cr500af instead with some light porting instead. about as much fun as you can have on a bike but my 450f is easier to ride and I was faster on it everywhere else but the dunes.

not a chance i agree to that. 4t run hot and steamy and cannot survive extreme conditions. this is where 2t comes in handy. after that it is just personal power preference
@ClaytonSensiba8 жыл бұрын
Brandon Quenneville I said for a less experienced rider, I doubt a less experienced rider would be taking a 4 stroke into conditions that will ruin a bike due to overheating. And you have to be a total idiot to overheat the hell out of your bike. Also have you ever heard of cooling fans?
@Ferms127 жыл бұрын
From 4:45 to 6:00 is the very best summation of the notable differences between the two. But I think the 4t has the "power/torque" from bottom to top and are less forgiving in tight/technical; and 2t bikes have a a torque curve that starts lower and has less hit in general before the powerband but more stalling resistance for the tight/technical.

Really enjoyed your comments and ideas on this age old debate. The AMA went from 250 2 stroke to 450 4 stroke as the premier class (miss those 500cc 2 bangers). Regulations changed, emissions etc. Manufacturers/Marketing that is the way it is going. Electric start amongst other things and now it is 'cool' to have a dirt bike or even a Harley without being a 'biker' tattoo stereotype, things have changed. Begs the question, based on capacity (cc) and no other direction of teams/manufactures/marketing etc. What would the top MX SX riders choose to ride in today’s AMA SX and MX series? 250cc 2 stroke would be my guess. 450 vs 250 massive difference in capacity there. That adrenalin rush when the 2 bangers on the pipe, nuf said, trying to keep it clean here. Love the 300 2 banger in the bush.

Hey Kyle. Blessed is the correct word. I have a mx bike (ktm450sxf) and a enduro bike (300xcw). I have to say the 450 on a track makes me smile the most, but there is a joy in climbing out a rock incline that is just magic.Very very spoiled. Like you, I can head out my front door and go bush bash for hours in endless terrain for free. The track can be pricey and is slightly more risky, so I tend to ride the 300 more. Which is great because it's dirt cheap to maintain.

Of course 2ts are not obsolete. I have 4 2ts in my garage now, and 3 of them are likely to remain. They are: KTM 300 XCW, chain saw, string trimmer, and hedge trimmer. I'm taking delivery of a new '17 350 XC-F soon, and I think there is something to be said for getting used to one dirt bike. I did keep both a MX and a woods bike, but at 54, I've decided to take a extended leave from the track, sticking to the 350 for dirt and the FJ-09 for back road sport touring. :)
@devinwright1318 жыл бұрын
You're kind of saying it already but 2 strokes are very different than they used to be 10 years ago. These new power valve systems give access to power all across the R's and have a TON of low end in addition to that heart pounding top end zing. I love all different kinds of trail riding on my 2013 yz250. All I had to do was put on a slightly heavier flywheel to help throttle/hookup control and barely gear down for the technical stuff. Really affordable at 5k new, plenty of stock power, and much easier to work on/cheaper to rebuild.
@tomalealso3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the follow up, I was out on my 2T a 1985 Maico 400 yesterday, really the first time since I finished building it. I had ridden it before but yesterday was the first extended trip, up to this point. I had been riding my 2009 KTM 400 XCW I like both but realized several differences. The maico requires precise throttle control and on fast wide trails is super fun . at that speed the 4 T is frankly boring. but going up a steep hill with loose rocks the 4T is easier, the 2 T was more difficult, do able but more difficult,. By comparison going down hill on the same kind of trail, the 2 T was much more controllable. The reason is because with a 4 T and engine brake the rear wheel wants to lock up while the 2 T will roll over the loose stuff, in the sand I much prefer the 2 T Some might be tempted to suggest that the reason is because of how old the 2T is but honestly that has very little to do with it, we are comparing the 2 different power plants not the age of the bikes.

Old video, new comment. 2001 cr250r race ready vs 2017 crf450rx, I still have both. My two stroke is fun, light, nimble, nice in tight woods and eats up rear tires. My 4 stroke has mapping, fuel inject, ungodly power stock! My four stroke in race mode is just down right ridiculously, thought I notice myself self taking really tight single track areas a bit slower as soon as I get just a little more elbow room thru the trees I’m gone, it’s smoother and puts the power to the ground better, loving this thing and I’m a die hard 2 stroker but I’m loving this four stroke and the technology. My buddy is on a 300 ktm and I literally can take a lunch break waiting on him to catch up when I’m on my 450 running single track but I am 6’4 and have the strength to harness the power. This is definitely not the bike for a smaller rider. Both bikes are great! 2 strokes give a certain fun factor I always loved. 4 strokes are smooth Power and in a lot of cases more power than needed. Maintenance, 2 strokes are just down right tough machines and cheap & easy to work on, my 4 stroke kinda scares me maintenance wise. Long story short, down a red bull and go ride who cares...

@DirtBikeChannel8 жыл бұрын
Open desert riding I'd steer away from the XC-W and look for the XC. It does great. The 4 stroke or 2 stroke out in the wide open desert is a preference thing. If you already like the 4 strokes and think the wide open desert if where you will be riding, then stick with 4 stroke.

My transition to beta rr 300 was the best choice for stepping up with my bike control. However I started racing (had 12 races already) and unless it is a hard / extreme enduro single trail, 350 4 stroke is going faster. We race mainly cross country races (cca 13x 7min laps) and 300 is wearing me and my hands off, plus cornering is sooo darn difficult compared to 4stroke. Kyle, whats your view on vibrations of a 2 stroke and carpal tunnel issues? Some veteran racers showeŕd me their scars from surgery on both hands and told me they had to throw their 2 stroke away for good...

Kyle im trying to figure out if i should get rid of my 4 stroke for a 2 stroke 300 XC, and i know it all depends on the rider but would you recomend a 2 stroke for a rider that only does trails, mostly wider fairly fast trails (only get to hit some good single tracks a couple times a year because of where i live) while now and then hitting some crazy technical rock sections? I like my 450F alot but it feels big and heavy alot of the times, and i want to try something new, its unfortunate i dont know anyone with a 2 stroke because all the people i ride with are my fathers friends and they are all on big 4 strokes and arnt into 2 strokes at all. I trail ride a yz125 so maybe I can help. the single biggest thing that made my bike feel so much better in the steep stuff was swapping the rear sprocket for one with two more teeth. it didn't hurt the top side, and it's smoother in steep climbs. Now it still takes work, but it took that a lot of work and second guessing out. That'd all I did outside of the small stuff. A lot of people will add a reuse clutch which I'm a little against since I feel like the 125 is a teaching monster (mines my first bike at the age of 26) there's also a flywheel counterweight which I think is a good idea if yours doesn't have one. Gearing and clutch control are the big things in my opinion. But I am just a rookie.

I want to come ride Utah! Would you be willing to tell me where to stage/camp, tell me what direction to head, and/or describe the major land limits to the north south east and west of the staging spot. I will continue to research and map out a few rides from there. Love your videos and commentary. Thank you!

I have had rmz yzf crf ktm xcw 450s for the last 10 years and just picked up 16 husky te300 and I would have never predicted how much I love riding this bike ...mostly tight single track but this thing does it all and never stalls (no doubt just fun to rip)

My first bike as a 16yo was a early 80s Suzuki er185 trail bike that was badly abused and blew up not long after buying it ,I swore I'd never get anther two stroke... Recently 25 years later I restored a 82 tt250 yamaha because they look cool and I've do Ne a ton of trail rides over summer but then I noticed the 300 2 strokes and came across dirt bike channel and now I am the proud owner of a ktm exc300 which suits my riding style perfectly , long live the two stroke!

Hey kyle! I was interested in buying a four-stroke bike from KTM. I was always envious of not have to mix oil just about every time we go riding. I previously owned a yz250 two-stroke and felt it was the perfect bike for me; unfortunately had to sell it when I first moved. Are there any four-stroke KTM bikes that you think performs similar to a 250 two-stroke engine? We typically go riding in rocky trails and climb hills.

I'm happy you made this video. So we can all agree that a more technical type of riding is where the smoker takes the win for sure. But the wide open desert is where the thumper takes it.
@DirtBikeChannel8 жыл бұрын
I'll agree with that one. Nailed it.

+Dirt Bike Channel an idea for your channel. A project build on an older 4 stroke or two stroke. Not something that's over the top but something that a regular person would be able to afford. Just an idea. I would love to see what you would do to an old bike. Let's say on a 3k budget including the bike and aftermarket parts

Hey I'm looking at a yz125 and the only thing im really concerned about is the size of the bike. I'm 6 feet tall, and idk if the bikes gonna fit me well. Anyone got any thoughts?
@joey6278 жыл бұрын
You'll have more control over the bike but if your more experienced go with a bigger bike like a 250 or 300

Hey I'm a Jan of your channel and have bin watching your videos for a while and I got to say they have helped a lot. I've just recently gotten into dirt biking and your channel has bin teaching me a lot about the hobby. So I have a ktm 2016 250xc and I just changed the power valve spring (I think that's what it's called) to the red spring from the yellow one. I haven't ridden it on a trail yet but I rode it around my yard and it feels great. But I had one concern and that was will I lose traction because of the back tire spinning out?
@DirtBikeChannel8 жыл бұрын
The red spring will allow the power valve to open earlier in the RPM range. That means more power faster. Yes, that can cause the wheel to want to spin more if you are not careful. There is no right or wrong answer here, it's just what you like. If you find the Red spring it too harsh, you can drop back the the yellow. Green is the most mild as far as those spring go.

This is always a good debait. I would go 2stroke any day. I know 4 stroke is awsome too but i just love the sound and the easy maintainace of the 2. I had a 2001 yamaha yzf426 and it was good but it landed me with big bills to many times. Geoff.

2 stroke can be used for on road use as long as it abides within your city ordinances. Normally that means small engines, scooters, small motor boats, leaf blower, etc

Very true,, my CR 250 gearing down with 14 tooth front sprocket & 52 rear sprocket, is great in tight cornering,,rocky hill climbs ,,But has the 2 stroke power band power slam..it’s has a hand full of power. 4 strokes has a more torquey acceleration..But are still a blast! SO PIC YOUR THRILL!!

my brother has two bikes, a really old lc4 customly built into a offroadbike kinda thing, its from maybe 99 but it still rips its 4 stroke and i really love it...it is a superheavy machine, so nothing for woods or difficult terrain, but we have a lot of acre here in our area so its okay, its just really fast and heavy, so much power (620ccm i think) and the other bike is a suzuki 250ccm from 2010 or sth, 2 stroke, this thing is just ridiculous light in comparison to the other bike and it drives so easy, its like riding some bycicle or sth i dunno :D

Firstly, thank you very much. There is not a lot of 2T info out there now days, this is some good material. I have one question... During the 7 Video's, you never mentioned anything about 2T fouling spark plugs, depending how you ride them, i.e: if you coast too much you foul spark plugs. Myth or Fact? The answer to this question answers so much more, i.e: Beginners vs Experienced for 2t, Slow technical tracks vs open fire trails...
@DirtBikeChannel6 жыл бұрын
I have NEVER fouled a plug. None of my friends have ever fouled a plug. Combined we have thousands of hours of 2 stroke time without a fouled plug.

Can you make a video about bike service, like how long time you can take between services. enduro drive with like 4 stroke and 2 stroke from 125-450. would like to know since i have gotten very confused with the service times. Or if you would like to type just over PM :) Maybe weird comment on this video but i would love to get it straight :P

I had a carb 2 stroke, and I had the carb replaced, and I took it to the dealer, and had them tune it for the new altitude after we moved. I rode the crap out of it before, but the carb was always cracked. I was riding for a bit after it got replaced and tuned, and the piston seared against the wall, and the dealer said that the carb wasn’t letting the oil in. It was running off straight gas. I’m with the 4 stroke on this one.
@shaniking177 жыл бұрын
From 2 you move to 4 and not vice verser. My first bike i ever rode was a 2 strokes suzuki a100 and the suzuki k125 2cylinder 2 strokes but i think The 4 is better in long term because with 2 stroke u get the torque but need maintenance quite often
@commanderroddi77423 жыл бұрын
I know this is an older video, but sometimes its about practicallity as well. Right now, only dirt bike I can have is a dual sport, so something that is street legal and gets me some fun off road (looking a various things, KLxz300, WR250, 350 EXCF.... Japanese bikes are usually a bit better "on road" while the KTM is better off road, but also much more money (I cn pick up to KLX300 for price of a 350 EXCF.... I think for me a two stok 250 or 300 would be great, but I need a street legal one and the ones I've seen all all four strokes....
