2 tone powder coating BMW wheels

This is my way of doing a 2 color customer powder coat job on a set of BMW wheels. If anyone has another way of doing this let me know I would love to try other applications. Thanks for watching.

vacuuming and wiping like that is a crazy job but there's no good way to mask it off unless you do thousands of the same wheels and have a jig/mask made for them..

When you put the chrome down and take it out of the oven, how long before you can put your candy color over it? I hear that the chrome needs to be still warm but not too warm and not too cool because the second coat won't stick to the wheel. Any suggestions on someone getting into the powder coating industry? :)

Lower end guns won't provide a strong enough charge so you will have to hot flock a second coat. Upper end guns can provide a strong enough charge to penetrate the base coat and get a second layer to stick while the substrate is cold.

Your base all depends on the top coat. If your top coat is a trans color your base coat has to be shinny (chrome or silver).

We actually dont use much water at all. We have a steem clean system. We try to use the bare minimum of water.

I've seen a lot of videos and this one tops them all! I know you don't show every single little step and you sped up the obvious tasks. That way, you kept the video at 6:25. It would have been terrible if the video was 42 minutes long. LOL Telling us how much you charge for each rim was very helpful too, to emphasize to those of us who think we can do it, how much work it really takes. I might start doing some basic powder coating very soon. Your video, which is done at a higher level, is not for the casual observer who walks in off the street. It assumes that you have SOME knowledge. Fantastic job!

Thanks and good luck with your powder coating! It takes a couple years to get a handle on all of the methods, cure time variables, masking variables and powder types, but it's worth it. There are many days of just powder coating racks and racks of things black, but this type of job makes up for it.

If it is not a big secret for you can you share your experience how you powder coat the wheels in two tones , because we see that you put the second layer on the normal temperature wheel and the take off the powder by finger, but when we put the powder by our gun on the normal temperature wheel the powder takes off from the wheel by air wich is coming together the powder from the gun . We working today that we put powder for the wheels after heated from the oven then it sticks good . What you think is it a problem with the powder gun ?? Thank’s

Nice job! I am a painter who does powder coating/wet paint. How did your colors not bleed into one another?! All I do at work is single color coats. Sometimes I use a primer then a top coat for powder but I thought If you have 2 colors so close that you may get a merging of the paints even if you wait for your parts to cool then shoot your 2 color. At least that's what happened to me when I tried to powder a part using multiple colors a flag with stripes I masked the parts off properly and tacked everything of perfectly and the colors still merged! It was white and blue though. Looks like you are using interpon akzo nobel paint and you running a gema optiflex 2. I hate the gema optiflex 2.

Straight6supra I think he allows each area to partially cure (10 mins)they he applies the next coat then another partial cure...if your pain is bleeding maybe your staic adhesion is the issue ..try a lower voltage on the first coat then raise it up on the next coats...hope this helps

Yeah, RanGer498 got it. You have to let the base coat cure for about 10 minutes (20 minute cure time powder), completely cool, then put the top coat on and do the wiping. You then cure the wheel for 20 minutes to completely cure everything. Masking with high temp tape it tough, especially on curved pieces where you have to stretch the tape to contour around the curve. You usually get tunneling due to creases in the tape. I'm not aware of a tape that works as well as pin striping tape for paint that can hold up to the oven time and temp.

Not to much. More than likely there will be dirt in it. Not worth trying and having to re clean the part.

Are you putting the wheels in the oven at temp of 375-400 or are you putting them in the oven when cool and baking them to the recommended temperature?

What are you putting in the valve stem holes so that you don’t have to use wire around it. I’ve searched everything but nothing comes up. Please help me??????

Go to any hardware store and get I bolts,nuts,washers that is it. Super easy any mark left will be covered by the valve stems.

Since you stripped all the paint down to metal.. why do you not powder coat the outside of the wheel (tire goes over)? Would it not corrode over time being bare metal inside there?

We use Black Beauty which is a glass based media. Sharp edge was just the lip of the wheel. When we wiped off the uncured powder this was the nearest edge, so it wiped off clean.

Los Los I typically keep the settings the same for all coats. I just adjust the kv settings to a lower level. You loose conductivity every layer you lay down. If your kv is to high you can get back ionization.

What is best media and corse to do Wheels? Anyone out there have opinions? I’ve been told do first run with corse aluminum oxide then before powder hit with fine crush glass. But there has to be easier steps the Blasting twice???

We do things our own way. Might not be the best way. But it works for us. We use iron for all of the big and really rough parts like car frames. For the smaller and aluminum delicate parts we use the same iron but we recycle it after it's been used and broken down. It works great.

Yes, base coat is fully cured and allowed to cool. Top coat is then added, high points are wiped clean and the top coat is then fully cured.

It's not a matter of PSI, Its a matter of CFM. Ideally. A compressor that makes 125psi @ 200 CFM will do the trick. With the right blast pot & media of course.

I would say 5 times if washing and doing 3 layers. Media blast, blow off with air, bake (outgas), wash, bake (to dry), base coat, bake, 2nd coat, bake, 3rd coat, bake. I wouldn't want to wash the media off then outgas and go straight into coating. I'm still new but have always media blasted, outgassed then cleaned with acetone on my parts, then blew them off with air. I haven't tried washing them with water.
