I used to work for a powder coating shop that did not specialize in wheels, we only did them occasionally. We never went this far though. We would sand the wheel, power wash it, pre heat it, apply two coats, one clear coat, one color, and done. We also only charged like $200 for a set of 4 wheels tho. Stuff we mostly did was things like awning covers, decking screws, flag and tent poles, stuff that was cheap, high volume mass produced. So not as much time and care went into the details.

The only proper way to do a job that will have LASTING results is to remove the tire, use real powder coat material and bake the wheel in an oven at 325-400F. In short order, your painted on finish will chip badly. Yes, the immediate results will look the same but it's of no real value. $200 and in a month or less or active use, and let's not even talk about the winter and salt, they will look horrible and you will have to bring them to get powder coated by a professional. You already know this. Be honest, it was quick money for you. A paint job should have been $100.

Yes.. most shops want only the wheels! I had called many many shops and only like 2 of them, you can take the entire vehicle in. Yes a little more expensive because they have to mount em back and balance but I don't have a way or time to only take in the wheels! Lol

See the real issue is that people want the powder coater to do all that extra work for free. Like they just give away wheel balancer machines, weights etc then there's also the cost of extra insurance then not to mention the time. It costs to do the tire and valve stem removal.

technically yes, one just has to do the "pre-work" of masking off the reverse area with the special heat resistant tape. you can briefly spot some of it being applied in the video on the back side of the wheel where the mounting surface mates to hub. since a wheel is a rotating object this area must remain flat/true so no powder goes there (same with bolt holts).

What temperature do you put wheels in at? I work with powder coating with medical hoist and chair supplies, exact same process as this. Doing some alloys myself but unsure on the heat they can stand with applying the coating without the powder over heated and blister/ melt. I work from 220 to 380°degree. I assume it's around 200mark as same of other spray stuff I do

@@giedrius2149 that would be °C for me. Yes 380 is way to high for spray coating wheels or thick box section steel tubing. It has a certain tolerance to the heat to its spec. The coating material is powder which is basically made up of fine plastic that melts on material, As for spray i powder coat metals desired colour and leave them in the oven at 220c for 10 minutes. Then they come out with a fairly smooth finish, leave them in 5 or more min longer then the material/coated powder will get too hot and melt or change to a burnt colour and start to drip because can't resist the heat after that time.

You can still scratch and chip powder coating... not only that but colors are very limited compared to using a paint system. Regular paint allows bodyshops to tweak paint codes to try and match your sun damaged paint. Also... Goodluck powder coating plastic bumpers. 🤣

@@v4lhulme I would gladly pay more to paint all the body panels and frame with CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating), you paint to match the plastic bumper obv. That's the paint tanks use so if it protects them from corrosion, it would last a century on a normal car.

At 3:06 this is where it goes off the rails. Painting a smooth surface without sanding before hand. This is why "hyper" finish wheels have peeling issues. You can apply a powder base, sand, apply a black coat THEN apply "hyper" or "liquid metal". This is why I can't stand these vendors that do this shit. Your process is wrong. Not to mention all these companies leaning on that powder coating, their wheel color rarely ever matches the factory finish which annoys bodyshops everywhere.

Don't think that sleeve will stop your clear coat from being scratched because it won't. You're better off applying a layer of masking tape on your thin wall chrome socket if you're that worried. Wrong. I use PPG envirobase without issues every day. Also makes for a damn near if not perfect color match as well. Goodluck matching anything with powder unless it's black, and even then the powder color tends to be on the yellow side.

You dont need if you polish proper after sandblasting. The last coat of colorless making it look smooth so if its like 3 coats u dont need that. Sandblasted surface is the best surface for optimal resistance

Powder coating cost on a wheel usually is based on the size of the wheel. Around me east coast US a normal size wheel like in the video is around $100 -$130. If they are charging $300 you are getting ripped off bigtime.

There are two major reasons that powder coat should NEVER be applied to wheels. For one, it can hide cracks in your wheel that can prove deadly later on. For this reason powder coated wheels are banned from many racetracks. Second, if you damage your powder coat there is no thing as a touch up. It cracks and crumbles and the entire wheel must be stripped and recoated. With paint you can just touch up the scratch. This is why no wheel manufacturer powder coats their wheels, because paint is by far the superior coating.

Why do you say that? Hot flocking is actually approved by many manufacturers of powder. I've had better results hot flocking especially in combating Faraday cage effect. Plus it shows the coating depth and finish easier. I've also done durability test on parts that were hot flocked over standard and didn't yield any different results.

Will say that those ford wheels that he’s painting there vary in color from car production runs. I have a focus St and may production cars have a different color than June production so buying a wheel after market for my car would mean I’d need to buy all four. Also ST wheels aren’t cheap a four set when for 8k when I was looking at it. I’d be happy to suck up the 4-700 dollars if it means I don’t need to buy all four

They look good for sure. My problem with it is the person doing the powder coating has to be meticulous and good. I have had powder coated wheels come back looking good but require lots of weight to balance because the powder coats on the wheels are very uneven. As long as this is done by individuals, it is extremely difficult to have even coating.

Well, this is from my experience on my set of wheels that have been powdercoated. Prior to them being powercoated, the wheels are straight and I had no issues balancing them that require a significant amount of weights. All I am saying is if the spraying of the powder is done by a human, the quality can vary and if it is not done right you can have uneven layers which could make balancing difficult.
