Kind of a brutal move just to “scratch an itch”. You take a spot for the semi’s just to compete there knowing full well you are not going beyond. Next time maybe just record your scores on your own and get your own gratification of knowing where you fell on the board. What if someone serious about competing was trying to qualify for the games and missed their shot because Rich took a spot at semis?

We had the same question/concern. He confirmed with HQ they would allow someone else to take the spot if he declined. Hopefully that happens.

I just feel like it does have an impact at the qualifier level if you don’t get to do the semis because you just missed the cut. You aren’t even invited to the semis. Selfishly we all want rich and all the athletes to compete but the best of the best don’t want to compete if they can’t FULLY prepare the way they know they can and how they did when they were champions . If he only can/wants to do 95% of the training /prep for the games and doesn’t win , ppl will Say “he doesn’t have it , he isn’t the best “ and he would seem like a poor loser making excuses like “I didn’t train 100% ,etc” When you are an icon and the best there is a ton of pressure to be 100% every comp . That is a huge sacrifice for a husband ,father and business owner . Not as difficult for a top 20 athlete to show up and be in 5th place if he is in peak shape or just be in 14th place if he wasn’t totally prepared. A bit of grumbling about “wow, _____ struggled this year but NBD” This video shows you how impressive he still is
