Just got my ZV-E1 and this answers my question. I have always turned detail to -7 in the PP settings on other Sony cameras and couldn’t find this setting so will disable flexible ISO and do it through PP 8

Great video! Given that Sony haven't included Slog3 in a default PP on the ZVE-1 that method seems to be on the way to deprecation. The only issue that I have with this I like to get something almost not needing a grade straight out of camera (beyond Rec.709 conversion) and there is much more control in the PPs over things like saturation, detail, etc. I guess I could do this via a baked in embedded LUT (which seems to be the way forward once I switch over to the new way of doing things), but for now I am still using a custom SLog3 PP in the PP1 slot like you. Thanks again!

Thanks for watching and commenting! I was using the log mode for awhile but recently started shooting with both the ZV-E1 and A7IV together and there was a huge sharpness difference between those two cameras so I’m back to a custom Slog3 profile on the ZV-E1. It’s a much better match!

@BillMcLean Yeah the zebra IREs also behave quite differently between picture profile SLog3 and the "new method". For caucasian skin it's 55+-2 in PP mode and 65+-2 in the "new" Flexible ISO mode. It's like Sony is deliberately making this stuff hard! Cue thousands of frustratingly confusing KZbin videos about exposing SLog3 "correctly" that are completely oblivious to this important detail... 😂

The ZV-E1 stores your fully compatible LUTs directly on the SD Card that you can then export to your PC or Mac.

sharpness comes from not turning down "detail" in the picture profile. Hence, in-camara sharpening is being applied.

Interesting, I thought the -7 detail setting was A7IV specific, but realize now that was the default for FX3 and PP8. I’ll have to test again but I’ve been using the Log Shooting Setting lately. The difference is more noticeable compared to the A7IV, but less so once uploaded to KZbin.

Great work. A question I wondered myself and couldn’t find any clarity around it 👍.

The sharpness in the PP probably comes from the detail section of the PP configuration. My guess is that it is some sort of in camera digital sharpening.

Hey Bill, clean shot - keep it up (nice ZV-E1 ;)) Got your email and look forward to editing those photos on the channel in about a week. Appreciate ya. Great video by the way, solid and accurate info. Keep it up.

Awesome job! I do disagree, I think the picture profiles are making a big difference in the color space. For the first test shot, even though the sun went away for the picture profile, it looks a lot cooler / darker. I think its very apparent in the third test shot when panning up. The Picture profile is a lot cooler, the flexible shooting is a lot warmer picture. I do agree with you in the sharpness / clarity with Picture profile. It is kinda of wild how much better it is in that aspect.

Glad it came through ok on KZbin too and I’m not here thinking I could just be seeing things! 😂 I think picture profile will be my default way of shooting Slog from now on.

I have a lot of confusion regarding the Log Shooting mode. Does it mean turning Log Shooting mode on, the S-Gamut3.Cine/Slog3 will burn in to the Slog3, and if I turn the Log Shooting mode off, does it mean I'm still shooting Slog3 but without the S-Gamut3.Cine profile? Thanks God someone like you who brings up this issue!
@BillMcLean Жыл бұрын
SLOG3 is tied to either Log Shooting mode: on OR a picture profile with the SLOG3 Color Profile. If you are shooting with Log Shooting mode: off and no Picture Profile, the colors will be directly out of camera with a significantly lower ability to make drastic changes in post(color correction and exposure correction). I think with the ZV-E1 Sony was attempting to make log shooting more accessible to new people by providing the Log Shooting Mode setting as an easy on/off toggle. However, for folks who bought the camera having used other Sony product shooting Log via Picture Profile, it just adds a bit more confusion into the mix, especially since the results are different in each mode.

I agree, that’s how I’ve been shooting now. It’s a bummer that you can’t load a custom lut to picture profile mode.
@PritishBharti10 ай бұрын
Did you change the Detail value in Picture Profile mode? What was its value set to?
@BillMcLean10 ай бұрын
I did not. Detail level is still 0. Since this video I've gone saturation +2, I just find that its a little easier to get the color right on Log conversion that way.
@PritishBharti10 ай бұрын
@@BillMcLean you should try with detail set to -7 in Picture Profile mode as 0 still has a lot of in-camera sharpening and maybe flexible ISO mode didn't do that.

So if using Picture Profile can I still shoot using a display LUT? I can’t figure that part out in Picture Profile.
@BillMcLean5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately no, that is the downside to using picture profile on this camera. I wish that was an option!

Ok thank you. Me, too!

Any tips for me if I want to brave the Picture Profile setting without a display LUT? It seems so much better to me; I feel like I have to.
@BillMcLean5 ай бұрын
I’ve gone back to log shooting mode with the display LUT for talking head. It’s just easier to get exposure and white balance dialed in that way. Those two are definitely more difficult in picture profile but you get the hang of it after awhile. My A7IV doesn’t have any way to look at LUTs on camera so plenty of practice with that has me able to get something usable more often than not outside.

Please, can I somehow use gamma assist (show imported lut) while shooting in FLEXIBLE ISO?
@BillMcLean Жыл бұрын
helpguide.sony.net/ilc/2310/v1/en/contents/211h_manage_lut.html Here's the official Sony site, drop the LUT onto the SD card in the folder it shows there and it's pretty easy to then go select in camera. Hope that helps!

I do not understand why it is called "Flexible Shooting" since you cannot choose auto ISO because then it does not do +1.3 stops, it just goes balanced and then your recording looks weird - so it is not flexible.
