My cup runneth over with incredible protective love for these beautiful Elephants! Now our job is to keep them safe and away from anyone who means to bring them harm and they are out there! Evil poachers, people of India who just last week set a mother and her baby on fire. I still cannot find out their condition. The tourist companies who arrange Elephant “rides”. Do not ever ride an Elephant. Ever!! The people of the villages who set “snare” trips. The injuries the Elephants endure if caught in one is horrific. Read about Baby Elephant Khanisa an albino Elephant rescued by the David Sheldrick foundation. Her injuries as just a newborn calf is very upsetting. Many thanks to the wonderful workers and volunteers and people who donate financially to keep these Elephant foundations and sanctuaries funded and caring for these magnificent animals so that our generation and future generations will enjoy what we’ve taken for granted.

To my untrained eye, these elephants seem to be lacking something. They are browsing animals, and without anything to browse on, they are listlessly going through the motions, kicking uselessly at lawn grass. They don't look happy. Maybe I am missing a part of their lives at Whipsnade, but generally speaking I don't believe it's appropriate keeping these amazing and complex creatures in zoos. We should be moving towards sanctuaries such as PAWS in Tennessee, and the many Nature Parks in Asia that are happily springing up these days..

Wonderful to see young elephant play with his brother's or sister's, and they seem happy despite live in the Whipsnade Zoo. Personally, I find it difficult to see these elephants graze grass like goats. They would be so much better free in the forest surrounded by shrubs, branches, tall grasses and ferns full of leaves with other elephants. I must say however, that in a reserve or here at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, they are well fed and safe from poachers.
