thanks for the review. Looked at your LX470 and Discovery reviews also. What length of the cargo space from behind the front passenger seat to tailgate in the GX and LX? I'm looking for a GX or LX overlander for one person to sleep inside of. I'm 5'9". thx.
@ForgottenWaypoints4 жыл бұрын
Great question! The GX is about 60" with middle row folded. If you physically removed it, you'd can another 10". The LX is 63" with the middle row folded and if it was removed you'd gain 12".
@Benallst4 жыл бұрын
5 11'' GX owner here, you'll have plenty of room to sleep inside if you either A. build a platform to go over the second row or B. remove the second row.
4 жыл бұрын
The GX is very nice and has sufficient length but does not have a fold-flat cargo area; the 2nd row seats stick out, and the 3rd row seats are in the way (but can be removed). That makes the GX unsuitable for sleeping in without modification. For this and other reasons, I have a 4th-gen 4Runner, built on the same Toyota 120 (Prado) platform in Tahara but a bit leaner, lighter, and less tall. The 5-seater with the double-decker cargo system folds completely flat and has sufficient length (I'm also 5'9"). If you get a V8 Limited, it will have a similarly entry-level luxury feel as the GX, and it has the same engine and full-time 4WD system. A nice and unique feature of the 4Runner is the rear hatch with the retractable window. The problem is that V8 Limited models are hard to find. You tend to get a vehicle in better condition for your money if you go with a GX. If you are OK with a lower trim level 4Runner, you'll have more choices.
@Benallst4 жыл бұрын
@ sleeping without a platform drastically reduces the width regardless of fold flat because of the wheel wells, no?
4 жыл бұрын
@@Benallst Depends on your criteria, I guess. In the 4Runner, you have 42" between the wheel wells. I think that's a good width, and you can still go a bit diagonal if you're taller than, say, 5'10". No mod required at all, and it takes 30 seconds to fold the seats down, so this is perfect for someone who sleeps in the vehicle only occasionally. Nevertheless, I do have a (fully removable) platform consisting simply of storage totes (IRIS/Container Store) that match the height of the wheel wells (9"). I put a full-size IKEA mattress on top, which is wide enough for a couple. Xplorer Steve DIY has a discussion on the width vs. headroom tradeoff.

Owner of 2005 GX470. I love the barn style rear door. I carry kayaks and it’s easy to load them and access the gear in the back with the door opening to the side, easy maintenance and more reliable. I never had issues with the driver seat cushion, but I haven’t driven more than 5 hours strait. I love the beige interior and the quite comfortable cabin. We purchased a 06 GX 470 in July '20. Love the comfort, handling. We live in SC. Took a trip to UT in Sept. Stayed 17 days camping visiting nationals and states parks. Actually did a bit of off-roading in Moab area. Handled all of the obstacles well. In this video, you mentioned back fatigue. On the return trip, we put in 10-12 hour days. Neither me nor my wife experienced back fatigue. In fact, we were quite impressed with the overall comfort.
@ForgottenWaypoints4 жыл бұрын
Awesome. There was only one trip so far where the fatigue really hit me. I didn't have much of an issue on a Disneyland run from Utah to Southern California. I shouldn't have harped on the seats as bad as I did, they aren't THAT bad. But they still aren't as plush as a Range Rover, or even on '03 Tahoe (arguably the best seats GM has ever made). It does have additional fuel tank where the spare is on yours., about 47 gal in total over 2 tanks. Fill ups make me sad, they dont happen too often though. I can put half a paycheck into those tanks from near empty. Anyway range is 1600km which is 1000 miles. One of the things i love most about the vechicle is the range. It does 10.5 litres per 100k. You asked for seating comments/preferences: I recently moved from many years in a 2001 Audi allroad 2.7 twin turbo with 6 speed manual. I typically like a laid back seating position with arms out in front of me and thighs well supported. I've just moved into a 2008 GX470-obviously an entirely different ballgame. Haven't taken any all daydrives yet, but given the 470's interior geometry, I'm surprised to find myself preferring the seat nearly as high as it goes (I'm 5’ 9”), with seat front as high as it goes for thigh support, lumbar support about halfway, and the steering wheel low and adjusted so I can easily see everything on the dashboard without moving my head. The top of the wheel doesn't even enter into the windshield's view. I love the amazing visibility the seat height brings, and I really enjoy the humongous side view mirrors. Looking forward to learning more about the car. It doesn't have KDSS, which is a good thing, but I'd sure like to find a way to beef up the sway bars! Thanks for your insights and thorough coverage!

I think I'll try raising my seat and see if I like that better.
@larryhorton95343 жыл бұрын
I made the discovery while driving. Thought I had it where I wanted it, but tried raising it a little higher-and liked it. Had to correct other adjustments to compensate for the seatbelt now too tight. Drove a little further. Tried higher. Repeat. I did this 4-5 times until I found myself pretty much at the limit. I was blown away with the view-and comfort. If I don’t have really good thigh support, I start getting cramps in tibialis anterior. This option also gives me the best, most complete thigh support.
@Mr_blueridge212 жыл бұрын
You’re not the only one to be disappointed in the front seats, but I just covered 2800 miles in 4 days driving solo, and was pleasantly surprised. That said, I feel as though the bouncy back seat (not latched clearly) during the latter part of the video is so YOTA. It's like getting the perfect latch is critical and you (as the owner) are the one who needs to learn how to get it right, not Toyota... no doubt better than dealing with the insane issues common of 'domestic' vehicles. Glad to see the GX470 works okay on longer trips with a family of three. @ForgottenWaypoints4 жыл бұрын
GX460 has a lot going for it, but the newer the 460 the harder it is to make it off road capable thanks to all the absurd Lexus body cladding. If you can get a 2010 or so, it might be tempting. If you are thinking for primarily an off road exploring rig, there is a lot to be said for staying with the 470. If it were me, it'd boil down to the best vehicle for the price. A low mile 470 for $15k can be built out quite a bit with the $5k you'd save jumping up to a 460....so in the end it depends on intended use and budget.

How about a 19,000 mile in 9 months review of a 2008 GX 470? True story! Bought it March 7, 2020 it’s now December 16, 2020. Bought it with 172,000 and change miles and now has 191,000 miles. We put tires on it, and RCI skid plate because it didn’t have the original one and I changed the water pump and timing belt. This truck has been awesome!

Tough question for ya, new bronco or gx470? I actually met you through Carl a couple years ago when we rode Clear Lake. At that time, I had the bronco that's in your video for that trail but since have upgraded to a Black diamond with sasquatch and 2.7L. It's awesome, love it, incredible off roader. I have since moved back to TN and am having a hard time justifying the $900 a month for payment princess that I LOVE. I am considering paying a fraction of the price and replacing it with a gx470 that I can build over the years. Am I stupid? I'll drive it out to Colorado once or twice a year for the Alpine Loop, Imogene, black bear and those sorts of trails but will put all the miles on something much more comfortable in my almost exclusive commuter now. I wont be off-roading once a week anymore. I am assuming a moderate build on a Gx would tackle those trails with ease. Thoughts?

Man, I loved your Bronco! Too bad you had to move back east! Hope all is going well! You hit the advantages of the 470. We keep ours in stock form with just the tires and it does everything in Colorado just fine, except for the more technical trails. But you gain highway ride comfort. I was going to do Black Bear this year, but the air springs finally started leaking after nearly 200k miles and almost 20 years. I have replacements coming today actually. If your budget allows, I'd look into a 460, but if you can find a sweet 470, they are hard *not* to recommend. They are awesome. Biggest negatives are timing belt maintenance, frame rust (check that frame before you buy! and then coat if you can!), and poor MPG compared to modern vehicles. Other than that, they will last forever. It's still my wife's favorite car and if the trail involves long driving and the trail isn't too technical, we prefer the stock GX over our built LX. The Bronco is awesome though, I *almost* bought a 2-door with a manual, but they were so hard to find!! Thanks for sticking around the channel! Hope to see you back in Colorado again!

@@ForgottenWaypoints It sounds silly but I'm having a hard time letting go of such an awesome vehicle! Especially with how much prices have gone up. If I were to replace it some day I'd easily pay $10k more for the same package just 2 years later. Living in a much less temperate climate, commuting further(and on the interstate now), and wanting to travel in a 4x4 with kids, dog, wife...the bronco starts lacking some boxes it once checked. I was curious your opinion between gx and lx. The nearest off roading and place I'd really use it is 6 hours to North Carolina and 16 to Colorado. With a family traveling longer distances needing a trail rig, is the LX size a great enough advantage to overshadow the GX off roading advantage. I cant imagine doing anything more technical than mineral creek, imogene, poughkeepsie...mostly stock ride height (maybe 2 inches lift) and 33's.

@@ForgottenWaypoints Fantastic! No worries. I got the basics from your gx and lx reviews. I think I’m leaning lx. I’m curious, too, about your thoughts on the 100 vs 200 series lx. I like the look of the pre-2008 200 series better, and I gather the the seats are a bit more comfy, have arm rests. And there’s a bit better road view over the hood, and the rear seats are easier to remove. The 200 series looks more bloated, has a much more powerful engine, more modern tech like adaptive cruise control, a cooler, etc. It seems most online prefer the newer 200 series, but some prefer the older 100.
@ForgottenWaypoints2 жыл бұрын
@@armandosinger , I actually haven't wheeled a 200 series yet, but test drove a few. A few thoughts: My LX470 interior build quality looks better than early 200 series land cruisers (not LX). I was shocked. Later LC200s seemed to up their interior game. I prefer the LX570 interior to all trims, it's just awesome. It's just too bad the outside of the LX570 isn't as good as the LC200. I prefer the exterior looks of the LC200, especially the later versions. I like how the LX470/100 has removable seats. You can remove them in the LC200, but there isn't a quick release. That is a downgrade, IMO. I prefer the coil-over suspension to the LC100. I also like that the 5.7 has a chain and I don't have to deal with timing belts. If money weren't an issue, I'd have an LC200 or LX570.

I went driving down some gravel roads (not rutted or anything) recently, with corrugations here and there. I drive a buick, and it was great. But I got stuck behind a jeep that was going SO SLOW. It was quite annoying.
@ForgottenWaypoints4 жыл бұрын
Corrugations with a solid axle is night and day vs IFS. The Jeep needed to go faster, but if you aren't comfortable with that, you go slow and it makes it worse.

Wonderful review but your transfer case shouldn't grind going into 4L if you're stopped and in neutral. That combined with how long it took for the central diff lock to engage tells me you have transfer case issues. Check your fluid. It should only take 2 flashes for the CDL to engage and going into low should be smooth. These transfer cases leak fluid from the actuator seal, and only hold 1.5 qts of fluid, do it's super easy to run low or dry. Mine was grinding going into 4L and took forever to turn on the center diff, until I checked the transfer case and saw it was bone dry.
@ForgottenWaypoints3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Something was odd in that clip (it even suprised me). I was out on the same trail the other day and swapped it into low and it was so smooth, I thought I was still in neutral. The CDL also shifted fast. I'm about due for a t-case oil swap anyway, so this will be a good time. But we've been off road quite a bit since the review, and the review was the only time it struggled to get into 4Lo. I must have had it bound or rolling slightly in neutral (foot not all the way on the brakes) when filming and didn't know it. I agree, the gear shifting is incredibly smooth, especially if you're used to Jeeps.

AHC goes from High to Normal at 19mph. / I had an Ironman 4x4 Foam Cell Pro installed on my 99 LX470. It's a beast of a set up. It's much better than a nitrogen shock and has more oil than even some remote res. shocks. Metal Tech upper/lower rear arms, SPC uca, extended sway bar links. Rides much better than my stock AHC. FYI, my LX had 288K and the AHC still worked.

The first thing I did on our 2008 GX 470 was remove those rear seats and put them at the curb. I like the swing open hatch as my wife likes to stand up there and take panoramic pictures. It works great! Cannot do that with the hatch but maybe from the side door. My only nit to pick with the seats is that they don’t go back far enough. An inch and a half to 2 inches further back would be perfect for me. Otherwise I can get perfect adjustment out of it

To me, the GX's rear door always opened on the wrong side. Am I wrong in this thinking? When I am parked on the street in my FJ Cruiser, my door opens street side, which seems safer/more practical.
@ForgottenWaypoints4 жыл бұрын
You are not wrong, the Discovery 2 is the same way. I figured this was because the GX is first, and foremost, a Prado with an aim for the Japanese and Australian market, thus the door opens streetside on RHD vehicles. Same idea with the Land Rover. The FJ was designed from day 1 for the US market. Why both Land Rover and Toyota couldn't just reverse the hinges, I don't know.

I have Prado 120 4.0 V6 2005 with 135k like shown at 1:15 min. same colour 5 seat with full spec which includes KDSS also and everything else like GX except no sunroof. The car is awesome.On road or off road it makes me smile everytime. Enough torque and with central diff you can plounge trough 1meter of snow without a problem. The 120 or GX470 are the last of their kind. Prado 150 has in my opinion not the same quality and is not that solid build like 120. New LC 150 is just more comfort and that's it. Everything else is missing.Prices of GX and 120 are now sky rocketing. I won't sell my for a very long time.

In my opinion, yes. The AHC of the LX, being hydraulic is also more comfortable. Now, with my lift and tires on the LX, some of that equalizes, but the seats in the LX are superior.
