@@samprokop, I got my lift from Cruiser Outfitters, OME lists it as "250-400lbs+" on the rear and 250+ on the front (with the HD torsion bars) Obviously, I don't have all the armor yet, so it's about a 3" lift, and my torsion bars are cranked to the max factory spec (only a pathetic 1.5" of droop). I anticipate when I get a rear and front bumper, it will sag about 1/2", which will allow me to relieve tension on the torsion bars and gain another 1/2" of flex and ride softness. I don't anticipate rubbing though, I still think I have plenty of space in the wheel wells.

Daniel Lakhani I guess it depends on how you travel, but I would think family of 5 would be tight. We are a family of 4 and seems a bit tight at times in my LC. I am a really big fan of the LX, just couldn’t find one that drove nice, so ended up with an LC. When I took my LC to my mechanic for an inspection, his first comment was don’t buy it the maintenance costs are too high. 100% agree about the forums (and others) that talk about bullet proof reliability. Yes it’s reliable if you keep up with the maintenance and don’t have a total brake failure do to brake booster mentioned. I am looking at LXs again now and prices are even higher than when I bought my LC last year. If you can wait until early next year, there is some thought prices will come down a bit. If you want to learn some common inspection pointers, check out OTRAMM KZbin channel. He has a 100 series video there. Good luck with your search.

I got rid of my 200 series 2017, it was a lot of money, I took it on a lot of trips and outfitted it pretty well. I found myself super annoyed at the range (I know I could have gotten a bigger tank but I was already at the limit for weight). I despised the stereo to a degree I just can't tell you how much it annoyed me. I hated the nav as well, it was notorious for taking a crazy amount of time to wake up. When it was stock, nothing done to it, it was amazing, but once I added roof rack, awnings and other stuff, the handling started to die off, and was weird at small frequency bumps on the freeway at 80mph. I had a goose gear system with a fridge, and all that, went all over with it, but it isn't the gem a lot of people act as though it is. My raptor got the same fuel economy (6.2) and was arguably better at the chop bumps at high speeds (obviously you would expect this, but the LC was going, I need more stuff). It did take me places that were epic mind you, where others struggled slipping and what not. One run I did, people with modified jeeps were asking "are you hitting?!" Nope. I have to watch my lines more carefully but it is OK. My point to this diatribe is, your rig probably handles the high speed chop better when outfitted, thanks to the torsion bars.
@ForgottenWaypoints3 жыл бұрын
You might be right. I do more crawling than high speed, so I'd prefer a solid axle (a 105 series would have been epic), or coil overs next. I tolerate the torsion bars on my 100. They aren't bad, but not my favorite either.

@@ForgottenWaypoints All true. I had the same dilemma. Couldn't find an LC I liked, to save my life. Was forced into an LX and did tons of research and test drives prior. This, coming from an FJ60, two FJ40s, and a Montero. Personally, I would now favor an LX, even with AHC - it's extremely useful. Find a good one with factory service (or specialist maintenance and full records). Many LXs are babied, and tend to be cheaper. The interiors are definitely better. Better stock audio. There's more sound deadening and the glass is a bit thicker. AHC is great when it works; mine is flawless at 250k. Things I dislike - the headlights/grill, the side cladding, and that it doesn't say Land Cruiser lol. The rest is a win on the LX. Don't hesitate.

Hey brent, fellow LX470 owner and everything that I've had to say about the 100, you've said it already. I think what every prospective 100 series buyer needs to know is that these vehicles aren't cheap to run or purchase. Most buyers will think that reliability and durability means cheap to run. However, that is far from the case and these 100s will be on par with a LR/Range Rover to run in terms of cost. Parts are 99% OE/OEM to run these things right because the aftermarket just can't produce the same quality to Toyota. Also what is frustrating is that I too have run into discontinued parts/sold out completely. Just last week, the plastic brake clips have become brittle and broken, tried going to the local dealer to pick them up: unavailable, go onto Partsouq ready to pay $25 shipping, part is unavabilable and no longer produced, and are exclusive to 100 series. How are your rattles? I got rid of my AHC for a Radflo 2.5RR with 2865 springs, no aftermarket bumpers or anything, mine became a rattle box overnight after getting rid of AHC.

Hello, excellent video, I have a 2002 lx470 with the ahc system deactivated, I have installed the OME rear suspension, but in the front I have only adjusted the torsion bars and I am not satisfied with the appearance because I see it still very low from the front, What is the way you recommend to raise the front part at least 2" more. Thank you and congratulaciones.
@ForgottenWaypoints2 жыл бұрын
It took me 3-4 tries to index the preload enough to get the lift I needed. In fact, a few months ago I dialed the front back about 1/2-1" to get more front flex (I had it raised to high). But if you don't have enough preload on the t-bars, you'll run out of adjustment before you get to your desired height. There are lots of threads on Mud. Good luck!!!

Have you owned a Discovery 2? If so, how does the drive feel compared to the Disco? Beyond the windows, I guess I'm just going to miss the Land Rover feeling of driving mine.
@ForgottenWaypoints Жыл бұрын
I have a Disco 2 in my garage right now. In fact, I have a review on my channel. The biggest thing is size. The LX is like a Range Rover. It's whisper quiet. Seats are comfortable. Arm room. Lots of arm room! Seating position is high, but the Disco viewing angles are still superior. The Discovery 2 is like a refined Jeep TJ because of the 100" wheelbase. It can dart through traffic, it FEELS and drives small. The LX is refined. The independent suspension soaks up the pavement. It's quiet. It's larger on and off the trail. Both are fun to drive. The LX obviously has more power, but off road the Disco with a lower geared transfer case shines well. You can modulate the throttle better, I feel, on the D2 and the LX takes more skill due to the IFS (lack of flex) and how big it is. Honestly, the LX is a better "overland platform" from a quality, noise/vibration/harshness and comfort standpoint. That's not a knock on the D2, the LX was meant to compete with an L322 Range Rover and exceed an LR3, not a Series II Disco. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nojcf2One5tpbNU

Yeah, the message started when they swapped from an analog to digital service, that reminds you just how long ago 2003 was. I guess Lexus would upgrade/disable it for a time, but that window is far past. I thought it'd bother me more than it does, but now it's kind of a joke. What was funny is when my parents bought a new RX and when my youngest kid went for a ride he said, "Grandpa's RX doesn't have a Lexus Link Error. It's not as good as ours." Lol.

Ok I see now you’ve had it for a while. I don’t think you need any more advice :). That 100 is a great truck. I think you nailed it all pretty well. Especially the part about the motor. Btw, the maintenance costs crop up on a vehicle that still EXISTS when damn near every other platform is already off the road. And you think the 100 has maintenance? I entertain dumping my 80 every two years when I have to do coolant and especially that birf job. Makes me nuts.

@@ForgottenWaypoints Gimme an example other than the timing belt which honestly the interval is 90-100k which 100 owners think is maintenance cuz you’ll do it 4-6 times in its life.. CVs are pretty cheap. Brakes, rotors, belts, alternators, unjoints, all good. My neighbor has BMWs. He says it costs him $1.50 per mile to own them. He has to replace rotors on EVERY brake job and he does the brakes every 20k as an example. 100s don’t need much compared to the 80 (coolant, transmission fluid, etc). I see some stuff needing replacement when they get old like I did all my diff bearings, axles, drive shafts but that was when it had 200k and even those were pretty reasonable. Jeeps don’t exist at 200k, at least nowhere near the rate 100s do.
@ForgottenWaypoints3 жыл бұрын
Frame coating sucks, you'll spend ages with POR 15, charcoal canister is horrible and $600, brake booster fails, $2500+ or a reman, CV shafts aren't cheap, but built well, timing belt job is still $1k+ to do right, front ABS sensors are junk (OEM has zip tied brackets), it's a press fit (rust issue) and is $400. China knockoffs are $20. The rear sensors are fine, it's almost like two separate crews designed them. It's built well, but requires a lot of TLC. I've owned 2 rovers, 2 jeeps, and 1 hummer H3 and a GX470 and all combined were cheaper to own at the same mileage than my Hundy, and my Hundy was dealer serviced from day 1. I still love my cruiser for many reasons (many listed in the vid), but she's not cheap to own, on the contrary it's been $$. Now I'm dealing with "boiling fuel", research that one, it's a flat out Toyota design flaw. If I sell the hundy, it will be because of that. In the meantime, I'm working on some extra heat shielding.

No, atrac just measures slip, when a wheel slips it pulses the brakes to swap torque wheel speed between sides. The trick is to keep the throttle steady, if you let off...you lose momentum. If you give it more, it can slip more and then pulse more, losing momentum again. Just enough throttle for it to activate and keep it constant is what I find works best. It's somewhat of a skill actually.

Great video Sir, I currently have five hundys (4 LXs 1 LC) but no '03 model. Very good info you shared overall but I have to push back on a few items. "Toyota loves maintenance" I totally and respectfully disagree. If anything, I would say some, maybe most, Toyota Land Cruiser/LX owners love to do maintenance, needed or not. Most "maintenance" that owners do is not "needed" and creates a skewed cost of ownership curve. For instance, a brake booster you mentioned is not at all routine maintenance as you described. That issue might happen once in a LX lifetime. I may have the brakes go out on all five of mine today, but so far I've have never had to replace a LC/LX470 brake booster. The suspension corrosion is also not routine maintenance nor is it Toyotas fault the LX was driven in perhaps salty conditions or some other corrosion causing conditions. That will not happen everywhere although the LX can be driven everywhere. The charcoal cannister is not routine maintenance. That is also a once in a LX lifetime item. I may have all five of mine go out today but I have never had issues nor had to replace a charcoal cannister in my LX470s. I agree the 4.7 V8 could very well be the best engine ever. It's been out of this world good to me. But held together by a "rubber band". That is nuts. The "rubber band" timing belt you're referring to is as dependable as the engine itself. Regarding the timing belt service work on pre-2006 engines, it absolutely does not have to be done at 90-100k. The belt, water pump, etc. can and will consistently give you twice the life span if it is not taken out prmaturely for the fun of it. And safely. If the belt happens to break, which is extremely rare even at over 200K miles, or the water pump goes out, then replace it with no harm to the noninterference engine. I could buy several used LXs with the money most owners pay for premature timing belt work at $700-1500 a pop. I currently have several hundys with near or over 200k on the timing belt and water pumps. If the belt happens to break or I hear the water pump bearing rattling then I will replace it. In 24 years of owning 12 LX/LCs, including several 80 series, I have had to replace one water pump. And that was a a new pump the previous owner had it installed before me. I agree, the coolant and cooling system is just about the most important issue with the LX. However, changing the coolant when it actually is needed is extremely easy and cheap to do. The LX470/Land Cruiser is as bombproof as a vehicle has been made.
@ForgottenWaypoints4 жыл бұрын
I wish I had the luck of just one of your land cruisers. Your experience is why I bought my LX in the first place. I expected that, especially with a rig that was well maintained and with a full dealer service history. I still love my LX, but I've gotta be upfront about my ownership costs.

Agree with this 1000%. My experience as well. People that have these issues were either unlucky or purchased a rig that wasn't well-maintained throughout it's life. That said, never had a vehicle you can defer so much maintenance on and still be as reliable as they are.

@@AlwynSchoeman Mall queen with factory service records, hopefully under warranty. I paid the premium for that piece of mind. My 02 with 210k miles was probably $2k over what I normally would pay, but was pristine with a solid history of pampering. I'm over 250k of real use, how you would use a Cruiser, and about $2,000 of maintenance total, much of which was baselining when I bought it. Front bearings are a bear - I paid someone to do mine, 2nd set as far as I can tell. I think that was $800. I could still have something catastrophic occur but hopefully I'm ready. I have a specialist mechanic that tells me what I can and cannot do.

This is a great video and summary - thanks for sharing! Am I right to assume that any aftermarket lift/suspension system requires you to disable AHC? And then does that mean you had to pull out all of the components when the new lift went in? Does this create any issues with the electrical system?

You have to pull out the shocks and springs. The rest can stay, I've only pulled out about half of it because Toyota didn't make it easy. There is a plug under the dash to a module that runs the display on the dash. Pull it and the AHC display goes away as if it wasn't there. Pretty cool actually. No codes or anything. Cruiser Outfitters sells the coin slot that goes in the place of the switch, so I even swapped that out. (You can see this in my video, the switch used to be below the ash tray, where I mounted my Ham radio. It's gone now.

Would you recommend as a daily driver ? Thinking about getting a 2001 216,000 for 6.5k

Yes. I use mine as a daily.

As long as you are good with the gas mileage, I think it makes a good daily driver. Visibility is amazing. Need to find the right example, you can double your price if it has not been well maintained. Also find a good Indy mechanic if not working on it yourself.

I'm in the process of getting a Toyota Land Cruiser. I'd like to do some off-roading, and i feel the 4Runner might be to small to sleep in (less comfortable anyway). Would you recommend a late 100 over an early 200? I'm in Florida, and once i have my off-road legs under me, i'd like to take some trips up to Utah, Arizona & Colorado for some off-road trails.

If I had the funds, I'd go for a 200. The size advantage of the 100 is negated by the torsion bars, IMO. I'd prefer the coils on the 200. That's me though. It's really personal preference and what you can afford.

Which one is better between the gx 470 and the lx 470 they both good vehicle i thinking about buying a gx 470 what you think about them i think you like the lx 470 more give me your opinion
@ForgottenWaypoints3 жыл бұрын
I like them both, I lean more towards the LX470, but others may lean GX.

@@ForgottenWaypoints i don't like the toshan bar suspension i rather the coil spring but the lx look more rugged
@ForgottenWaypoints3 жыл бұрын
@@georgephilbert8087 , the torsion is definitely the worst part of the LX, but the CV joints and rest of the drivetrain are far tougher than on the GX.

As a Aussie, it is so funny to hear our brand “Old Man Emu” pronounced “Emooo”. We pronounce it the British way of “eem-you”. So funny how Americans drop the pronunciation of some words!!!

How is the ride when you’re driving around unladen with the heavy spring kit?
@ForgottenWaypoints Жыл бұрын
I'm happy with it, I know meant who don't like it though. It is more firm and truck like, but I was never a fan of "floaty". I keep my AHC on sport on both the LX (when it had it) and the GX.
