Me thinks it is the way she waves her arms around when she talks and her slightly awkward mannerisms. Plus the upper inflection on the end of every sentence (or word) like she asking a question even when she isn't. Normally a bit annoying but on her it is rather adorable. Adorably quirky to sum up.

Hi Alanna, another great video. It looks like I have gone back a year here, as I am actually living in the year 2018. I feel a bit like Dr Who!! LOL. When moving to a new location, especially a different country, it can really be a challenge. We only moved interstate here from Sydney to Melbourne, though that is 600 miles and in some other countries, we would be in a different country. Strangely enough, Sydney and Melbourne are very different and the move here made life a real challenge for awhile. I will say one thing though, I have never regretted the move for a second. Experiencing big changes can be quite exciting and can really make life worthwhile. Anyway, take care and all the best, Robert.

Have you come across Viz magazine yet? Brilliant observations on British life & social observations, if a tad exaggerated.... 😝 Some of the characters are Geordie (Newcastle Upon Tyne) so the accent is wrote phonetically, which is a brilliant plot device. The magazine originated in Newcastle-upon-Tyne as well. North East. There's a lesser known Newcastle, Newcastle Under Lyme, both rivers, hence the differentiations in name. Brilliant videos. Keep up the good work. 😊

Greetings Earthling! or Hiya :) I have no problem watching "stream of consciousness" videos. Some might call it "wittering on" but it has its own charm, I find. With regard to the car insurance thing, at the moment you are lucky enough to be well served by public transport. The chances are, however, that you will move at some stage. This might be to a charming village that has 1 bus a fortnight, or none at all. I would seriously reccomend that you bite the bullet and get a car that has the lowest insurance group. If it can be parked off the actual road, even if only on a drive, that is also cheaper. Get a cheap second hand car and insure it 3rd party only. Some companies will add a discount if you get a driving tracker fitted..... Obviously if it is still more than your budget can take then don't do it. As someone else noted, don't just rely on online searches, go to a local Inusrance company branch (if you have one) and ask about what difference no claims bonuses can make after 2 or 3 years without a claim. Alternatively just hang in there until you are 25. Costs drop a lot at that point. Good luck whatever you decide.

I find it interesting , with regard language, that a country that has ties with the uk uses terms like 'the shop' for garage ... and 'med's' for medicine etc. just shows that proximity makes a diference.

Congrats on your 2 years. I'm looking at possibly going to London this year too for work (from Australia). What did you do for work? did you stay in the one place? and did you manage to travel around Europe much? Thanks

Hey! - I worked as an admin assistant for a college as a temp through a recruitment agency. These are great for newcomers as it's hard to get a permanent full-time job unless you're really skilled in a certain area. I have experience with school admin but couldn't get a job because none of it was UK experience. After a year, the college decided to hire me permanent so I work for them directly instead of the agency (basically just need to prove yourself). I have a video about jobs if that helps! - I live with my British boyfriend so didn't move around much. It might be worthwhile for you to stay in a hostel or Air BnB in London until you get a job, then find a flat near where you'll be working (or at least an easy commute) - I've travelled around the UK and Europe but I also live in Kent (SE England) where it's cheaper than London. Living costs in the London are some of the highest in the world, so you'll need to be careful about saving so you can travel. Hope that helps!

You're so right about car insurance being really expensive for non-Brits in this country. We found directline gave us a good price but that was coming from Europe rather than Canada. It's really worthwhile shopping around and not going just on the price comparison websites. By the way, recently subscribed and your videos are really engaging.

Hi Alannah. I was wondering if you would be able to do a video on the general state of affairs in Britain compared to Canada. Things like homelessness housing the tax system nhs things like that. I was speaking to my auntie who's visited America and she was telling me how Every time you call an ambulance there is a 300 dollar call out charge . Is it similar in Canada?? So yeah just the good bad and the ugly and how in your opinion it differs what you like what you don't like and things like that. Thanks

I was sitting watching this at work and the postman came in. Hiya he says and then looked confused when I laughed. I took no notice of people's greetings before. The thing that does bug me is when someone I have never seen before, usually in a shop, says see you later when I leave. No you won't see me later, you'll probably never see me again. Just say bye. Great vid as usual.

UK car insurance is so expensive because firstly there's a terrible lack of respect for personal property, which leads to terrible theft problems (being out in the countryside makes little difference, furthermore) and secondly because of the epidemic of ambulance-chaser compensation lawyers (a tradtion imported from the USA) ready to help you claim for whiplash injuries in the event of a bump. Then there's a third component - all the uninsured drivers whose accident costs are added to law-abiding drivers' insurance premiums.

I don't know about Canadians but I notice that Americans will remove a suffix if we use it, or add one if it's totally unnecessary: like burglarized which to me sounds like a joke-word for burgled.

"Hey" is more of a challenge here. Friends do say "hey" to each other, but if you call out "hey" people may take that as threatening, as in "hey you, what do you think you're doing?" It's like the traditional "oy!" that way.

Do you know that Thomas Edison suggested the word Hello as a way of starting a conversation and Alexander Graham Bell preferred the word Ahoy as a way to start a conversation. So Bell is known as the inventor of the telephone but it was Edisons word that was adopted as the way to start a chat which is a bit sad because i love the idea of saying to your friend " Ahoy there hows it going?"

Using 'Hey!' (3.32) is kind of rude in the Uk. It's considered a sort of warning like 'Hey! What do you think you're doing?' or 'Hey! that's my drink.' Which is why it doesn't get used much as a friendly greeting. It's also probably why a lot of American's come across as quite loud, pushy and aggressive. Walking up to someone and saying 'Hey!' may be intended as friendly, but unless perfectly pitched as such (something that's difficult for foreigners to get right) it's more likely to come across as 'Pay attention to me, I'm going to tell you something that you need to listen to, or else.'
@AthAthanasius6 жыл бұрын
Seconded. In the UK 'hey' is very much an interjection, used to at the very least get someone to take notice *right now*. I've been in the USA (and Canada) enough, plus TV/movie influence to know what they mean by it, but it was still a little jarring when over there.

jason antigua I hope I'm not intruding on your comment. If you pay privately they are 'like' what every you want them to be like relative to how much you are willing to pay. Most in the UK rely on our NHS and your experience can depend on your geographical location, you most like will need a referral through your GP, the waiting list is long and the route arduous. The NHS is faltering at best. Maybe a good topic for A&N to cover though a tad serious. Good luck.
