2 years making a multiplayer game | Spanky Devlog #6

We spent 2 years on our multiplayer indie game Spanky in preparation for our first Alpha tests! It took so long because we learnt so much and had to redo all the multiplayer! Twice! It's super fun now and we are getting closer to our steam release!

Hi Rory, really love to see how your game turn out after all this time. May I know which unreal engine version you use to make this game?

We started with 4.27 and have since upgraded to 5.1, and potentially 5.2 in the future but that isn't really on our priority list

Make decoy when you activate it the charecter starts twerking but you can turn invisible and go awey 5 sec later invisibility turns off and the twerk guy dies

Thanks for the knowledge but DUDE 2 YEARS!!!!!!!!! to make this game this could be made in a 3 days no way this simple baby concept game took u 2 years unless u was at a point like I don’t feel to make the game anymore and stopped for a while but in 2023 things are easy to but weather plugins to help make your game I’m not throwing rocks at u but 2 YEARS FOR THIS GAME something is terribly wrong if that real took that long there’s 14 year old kids who can make this in a day starting from morning till night again I’m SUPER LOST 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠HOW??????😂 but good job bro keep pushing an thanks for content

Thank you so much for your unnecessary comment but I will indulge anyway. I started off with zero gamedev skill. absolute nothing. I am self taught and out of the 2 years on this project that you are so surprised about, roughly 8 months was completely hobby time & just me learning the ropes. That's not an unreasonable time for anyone to learn an entire game engine *while* making a game at the same time. Yes the concept of the game is simple. A large portion of my time spent on the game has honestly been finding a good direction for it. I spent a long time on things that never ended up in the game like environmental physics platforms, fully functioning prop-hunt, detective modes etc. There are countless things built but not included in the final game, that is just what happens when I am learning new things everyday alongside building the project. You shouldn't be so abrasive about our progress, especially when looking back in hindsight. I will agree to some extent, If this game was JUST tag, default prebuilt movement and 2 maps then yea... 2 years is too long. But its not JUST that. We have modular modes, powerups, 300+ customization options, level editors, fast paced responsive movement that is NOT client authoritative - ALL OF WHICH we have learned during development and built from the ground up ourselves. The only hurdle solved with a plugin in this sense was the GMC which we use for movement, even still its not a plug and play solution - we have still made the entire movement system. And yes, If I started from scratch right now I could make it all lot faster too - but no one can make the amount of content in 1 day, for you to say that is very insulting. Anyways that's all I have to say to you. I hope our project does well, if it doesn't I have still learned an incredible amount of knowledge and my next project will be entirely completed in 3 days.
