The 2nd anniversary of me buying the RoughHouse 50 Sport scooter. How has it held up in 2 years and over 1200 miles? Have I had any problems? What are my likes and dislikes now that I've had significant time on the saddle? All these questions are answered in this video.
Do you have experience with scooters / mopeds? Do you prefer eBikes, or think eBikes have taken over for 50cc gas scooters? Do you have any scooter questions? Comment below.

I love 2T scooters, so much fun! They have a lot of potential performance if you like doing mods. I like that with scooters in general you can play with the acceleration and top speed without teching the engine. Myself, I juat have a problem not having anything to squeeze between my knees. I'm a life-long motorcycle rider, so it's what I'm used to. I wouldn't mind picking up a Honda Navi since you get a scooter that looks like a motorcycle.

Awesome to hear you had a passport. I too had a c70 as well as c90's, ct90,110 as well as a few scooters. A couple of Jogs. One an 85 with 1700 miles and the other is a 93 with 8k miles. Both have had minimum maintenance over the years. I always liked the Roughhouse. Its as close to the classics that you can get in a modern model.

My uncle had it. He just let us ride it. Honestly, I think he kept it just for us. Also, I misspoke. It wasn’t a Passport. It was an old Honda Express. Growing up, we had a friend with a Yamaha Razz. He crashed it and refused to ride it again, but was too embarrassed to tell his mom he wouldn’t ride it, so he would bring it to my place for everyone else to ride. I think me and another kid spent the better part of multiple summers taking that thing all over the place 😂

Seems to me the 50cc class is covered fairly well by (perhaps not quite legal) e-bikes. They claim about 2HP which would be similar to a 1500watt electric motor. The big advantage of the 2 stroke is the incredible range and fast refueling compared to battery power.

There is lots of upward potential with a 2-stroke, but I was referring to stock bikes. They won’t do the 50+mph people claim theirs will do right off the show room floor. The speedo might say they’re inching up to 50, but scooter speedos are overly optimistic. I saw someone with an Aprilia SR-50 (heavily modified) that had multiple gps verified runs at 70mph. It cost them about 10k to do, but it is possible 🤑

This scooter has not changed in years, i have a 2017 with 5,698 miles and for the most part 'Shop free'. Unrestricted,this Engine with the stock CVT will net you a true 45MPH with the 10" wheel. Put on the 12" wheel as stock with the Roughhouse Sport R50 and you have a true 50MPH top end ( rider + gear=150Ibs's). If GS would put EFI on this one (for winter start-up's) that would nice.

I've run the scooter gamut: Puch Maxi, Yamaha Razz, Kymco 125, and my current Kymco Downtown 300i. I use the 300i to get from small town to small town on 55MPH roads, and ebikes for local errands and such. I love both means of transport, but in the end I think electric will win out due mainly to its greener profile.

Electric needs a battery evolution. 6-8 hours to recharge to get another 30-45 miles of use (average electric scooter) isn’t going to cut it
@michaelsprinzeles4022
@michaelsprinzeles4022 Жыл бұрын
@@KevCentral That recharge time could be cut down today by using a BMS that accepts faster charging. Some e-motorcycles now can accept fast car chargers. Other than expense there's nothing stopping faster charging for smaller electric mobility devices.
@KevCentral
@KevCentral Жыл бұрын
There are battery limitations on how fast some cells can safely be charged. For anything that can accept a supercharge. That’s a large infrastructure investment that would need to add to a riders house - which just isn’t viable for most Americans. I think electric will become viable for anything other than a specific subset of drivers/riders when we get battery technology that can be fully charged in 2-3 minutes. Even with that there’s the electrical grid to consider; which isn’t ready to support the massive demand. Maybe one day, and I like the idea and would love to play around with some electric scoots, but it’s more a novelty at this point, IMO.
@michaelsprinzeles4022
@michaelsprinzeles4022 Жыл бұрын
@@KevCentral All you say is true. I was thinking more of public charging which is still not common for motorcycles & far off for scooters. That doesn't detract from the fact that most cells are not as limited as their battery management systems are. This is evident on a smaller scale in e-bikes. Batteries with the same 18650 cells may come with a max charge rate of anywhere from 2 to 5 amps depending on BMS. That rate is determined by the BMS not the cells. Not all battery packs can handle the 5 amp charge but those that can will charge in less than half the time than those limmited to 2 amps.
@twloughlin
@twloughlin Жыл бұрын
@@KevCentral I think the infrastructure for electric scoots will not be built around recharging, but battery swapping. That will reduce the need for homeowners to install recharging equipment, and will also be what allows apartment dwellers in cities (where scooters make the most sense) to easily use escooters. I'm sure you're aware about Gogoro; I think that's the way to think about escooters in the future, not recharging at home like ebikes.

Two stroke you only have one option Genuine’s 50cc, but I would suggest looking at 125 or 150cc if you need to go 45-50. A 50cc (even 2-stroke) would need to be modified to reach those speeds and that reduces reliability. Plus, even modified you’re still running them at high rpm all the time just to get there. 125/150 can easily hold 40+mph where I have to struggle to get there on my 50cc under ideal circumstances (flat ground, no headwind, etc)

I sold it to a guy that swore to me it would hit 40mph. Something I knew was not possible on flat ground. One day I caught him out on it. I was on my 150cc 2-stroke Stella which would cap out at about 54mph. I rode up beside him and said - let’s see the 40mph. I really don't think you should compare an ebike to a motor scooter. Other than being 2 wheeled vehicles, they have absolutely nothing in common and each one is a poor substitute for the other. Each can go places the other cannot. It is outright illegal to take a scooter in places ebikes are allowed to go such as in parks and bike trails while riding around in the lanes of even country roads on an e-bike is not a good idea and may be illegal and a ticketable (summary)offense. Then there are other differences, like range. Scooters have an effectively unlimited range so long as there are gas stations to stop at. This makes them suitable to different tasks. They are also built to vastly different standards. One is built to standards of the road and subject to laws and even insurance company standards (mandatory insurance with a moped) and the other to the standard of bicycles, not primarily a road vehicle with basically no external regulations. One requires registration and insurance and yearly inspection (varies by state) and the other, well, doesn't require any of these things. I'm not saying one is "better" than the other, just that they are not generally interchangeable like the difference between a car and minivan. They serve very different niches.
@KevCentral
@KevCentral Жыл бұрын
All those are exactly the topics I plan to cover in the comparison. The simple truth is that many people ask one vs the other, but there is much more to consider. They are both options for many people, but that’s not saying they are the same and/or always the right choice for the same needs.
