I grew up with CGI and was still mystified by this film. There is a great sense of adventure conveyed in the movie; it treats the mysteries of the ocean like a voyage into outer space. There is so much to love: the design of the Nautilus, the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, brooding Captain Nemo... I end up rewatching this film every few years and every time I get that damn "Whale of a Tale" song stuck in my head.

I actually always loved this movie growing up. To me even as a child i really recognized that there was just something about this movie. I may not have been able to tell someone what it was, but there was always something there that kept me watching. Only looking back later do i see how strong a film it is, and all that that encompases, and thats what i think i saw even as a child, that always kept me watching.

Me too, and I grew up with more modern practical effects and CGI. I used to pretend I was aboard the Nautilus. It's an engaging adventure movie, but also has bits of introspection about the human condition and politics. It's a movie that I think kids and adults can enjoy.

Intersting think about Nemo's origin is that Verne initially planned to made him a Polish citizen, but his publisher got really scarred about political backlash of such move because book was planned to release not long after fail of one of the major Polish uprising against Tsar's Russia, so Verne decided to change Nemo's origin to Hindu (i wonder if that didn't cause any "political concerns" across the Channel as well...).

This was one of my favourite movies as a kid, people forget sometimes that Disney did a few serious live action films, like this, and Treasure Island with Robert Newton which I also thought was a great imagining of the story. Where this is concerned I still remember the soundtrack despite not having seen the film in what must be 10 years or more. Plus, I still get chills even from just a youtube clip of the part where the Nautilus comes about and charges the ship instead of moving away. I think serious Disney might be making a comeback now that they're branching out, but they'll have to go far to match the soundtrack, characters, and set pieces that made this film great. Excellent video.

Do it, and remember that the source material is a science fiction novel that treats the continental ocean shelf like an alien world. Nemo is a very angry man, but he is also a visionary intellectual who has gained knowledge and expertise of the world he has chosen to inhabit. He is a lot deeper than the standard Disney villain, and it keeps the story moving past all the big action scenes. (The cute sea lion is pure Disney add-on, but at least it doesn't get in the way.)

No, they did not. The movie is hardly faithful to the book. They changed the story to make it a "jailbreak" story told from Ned Land's point of view. The book was told from Arronax's POV and relished in his fascination with Nemo as an explorer. The book is so much better.

The novel is actually one of Verne's best, and has withstood the test of time better than most of his work. The movie plays up the action & adventure side the most, but if you like science and technology, especially in the Steampunk venue, the novel is required reading. Nemo's anarchist politics also get aired more often than the movie, no surprise there.

The hell are you talking about? This movie is amazing. I saw it on the big screen in re-release as a kid and loved it. I even got to touch one of the Nautilus miniatures at Walt Disney World and take the 20,000 Leagues ride! I even devoured Verne's original novel. Hell, I even learned to read French so I could read the book in its original language. This movie is one of the best Disney live action films. It was also originally going to be animated, but Disney took the risk of making it live action. Harper Goff, the designer of the Proteus submarine for Fantastic Voyage designed the Disney Nautilus.

This is an example of what the site "TV Tropes" refer to as the "Unbuilt Trope." This was one of the first live-action Disney films, yet it lacks many of the hallmarks of a "typical" Disney film. For one thing, while it is fantasy-based and has moments of comic relief sprinkled throughout, the overall tone is serious - even grim - and not "wacky" like that of THE SHAGGY DOG, THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR, or THE LOVE BUG. I had always loved the "traditional" Disney films growing up, but when I watched 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA as an adult, not having viewed it for over 20 years, I was shocked by how dark the ending was; it would be hard to appeal to audiences with an ending like that even today! And all the while I had thought of this as just an adventure story about a bearded man and a guy in a striped shirt hunting a giant squid!

What about the newer version Disney did, that was made for TV? I thought that was pretty good as well. The Nautilus design was very similar & they did little to change it. The main thing I didn't like, is the water effects. They were clear enough, that it didn't seem like the sub was travelling through a medium. It seemed more like it was suspended. It was more like a space ship, on a blue colored background. I thought the acting was good, though. Michael Caine played Nemo.
