Just the respected memory of the Great Khukuri ! But today the Age of Missiles I think this Khukuri only be used just for self protection in close quarter battle. I think if you want to see the real Khukuri Drill you just have to see the Nepal Army Khukuri Drill ! Really full of techniques, reality and full of vigour. Actually Gorkhas are the peace loving people. No body should be misunderstood with this statement. During the First and Second WW Gorkhas were if not misunderstood were the protectors and winners for the Allied troops. The thing is whatever they did was to some extent demeaned by the British Government and India. They tried to exploit the simplicity of these Gorkhas which is just opposite to mankind. Jay Gorkha ! Jay Nepal !

The name "Gurkha" comes from the hill town of Gurkha from which the Nepalese kingdom had expanded. The ranks have always been dominated by four ethnic groups, the Gurung and Magar from central Nepal, the Rai and Limbu from the east, who live in villages of impoverished hill farmers. The Victorians identified them as a "martial race", perceiving in them particularly masculine qualities of toughness. Following the partition of India in 1947, an agreement between Nepal, India and Britain meant four Gurkha regiments from the Indian army were transferred to the British Army, eventually becoming the Gurkha Brigade. Since then, the Gurkhas have loyally fought for the British all over the world, receiving 13 Victoria Crosses between them. More than 200,000 fought in the two world wars, and in the past 50 years they have served in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Borneo, Cyprus, the Falklands, Kosovo and now in Iraq and Afghanistan. They serve in a variety of roles, mainly in the infantry but with significant numbers of engineers, logisticians and signals specialists. But their numbers have been sharply reduced from a World War II peak of 112,000 men, and now stand at about 3,500. During the two world wars 43,000 men lost their lives. The Gurkhas are now based at Shorncliffe near Folkestone, Kent - but they do not become British citizens. The soldiers are still selected from young men living in the hills of Nepal - with about 28,000 youths tackling the selection procedure for just over 200 places each year.

Martial Race is the concept of British that came to existence during British Raj in Indian sub-continent. Yes, Khas were classified as a Martial Race. Gorkhali Sena (Gorkha Soldiers) of then Nepal was Khas dominant army. Said that, Khas overran the unification battles of Nepal along with 2 wars with Tibet and anglo-Gorkha war. British were well known of the fact. And it would be foolish for them to not include that strength into their army. After Sugauli treaty, when British were allowed to enlist Nepali citizens into the EIC army, Khas were categorized as a Martial race and were a priority along with other Western Nepali hill ethnicities, such as Magar, Gurung, and Thakuri. So they became a part of early Gorkha recruitment process. At the time of Indian Sepoy Mutiny, 1857 AD, EIC had about 3500 Gorkha soldiers in 1 GR (Nasiree/Malaon Battalion then, Magar-Gurung dominant unit), 2 GR (Sirmoor Rifles then, a mixed unit with lots of Khas and Thakuri), 3 GR (Kumaon battalion) and a unit in Bengal Native Infantry (63rd Regiment) with Gorkhali soldiers of mainly Khas and Thakuri descents. Jase Rajput, a Khas from Sirmoor Rifle, was the most standout soldier during seige of Delhi. There are several misinformation regarding Khas’ presence in British Gorkha Army. Albeit, Khas are an inherent part of Gorkha recruitment and have served in Afghan wars and both great wars. It is true that Khas were not favored in British Indian Army after 1858. British were cautious of Khas’ loyalty to Nepal and Nepal Monarchy. Hodgson has clearly written in his book, “Khas have cleanly habits, are smart, and make excellent soldiers but their unconditional loyalty to Nepal Durbar may not make them very useful to us”. So, number of khas soldiers reduced. And this continued until 1890. While expanding GRs in British India, as per the advice of Eden Vansittart, British started recruiting Khas and Thakuri in each and every regiment in a definite number (again being cautious of their loyalty to Nepal and strict Hindu doctrines) and made 9 GR as a pure Khas-Thakuri regiment. After that, Khas served in British Indian army in different Gorkha Regiments: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th. And the 9th is a pure Khas-Thakuri dominant regiment, which still exists in Indian Army. It is in fact one of the oldest regiment of the Gorkhas. Presence of Khas in almost all GR is evidenced by the facts, such as Subedar Major Bhotu Khatri in 7 GR in WWII, Subedar Major Hari Singh Bohara of 2/2 GR in Singapore, etc.

Good video. Would only suggest to keep in mind while preparing any media material not to confuse between the terms Nepali (which means any citizen of Nepal, like the Gorkhas, Maithili, Marwari, Mondal, etc of Nepal) and Gorkha (name of community in any country). Nepal is called the land of Gorkhas, but there are Gorkhas who are not Nepali, like Indian Gorkhas who had mostly become Indian by virtue of 1/3rd of erstwhile Gorkha Kingdom annexed by British India 200 yrs back after Anglo- Gorkha War.
