I have a lot of records but i don't collect records. I just like to listen to music. I never sold them when CD's came along, instead i bought even more since they were cheap. Instead of buying one CD i could, in the 90's, buy 10 records on vinyl. I don't care if a record costs 100 dollars or 1 dollar if the music is good i buy it and play it.

I love Cosmic Messenger! A friend of mine who was into proggy stuff from the 70's had that on CD and played it at a party and I loved it. It's worth pointing out, Jean-Luc Ponty was on some HUGE Zappa records: Hot Rats, Over-Nite Sensation and Apostrophe! I love how his violin sounds like searing guitar solos on Cosmic Messenger. I think I paid $3 for my copy, too.

Yep in Australia most of those records would be significantly more. Tolonen was a prodigy and also was an excellent pianist - he recored that album aged 19. The Yvonne Fair album is great - it is just as cheap in Australia. The title track of Harvey Mandel's album was clearly an influence on Dark Side of the Moon, although it was written by jazzman Duke Pearson in the early 60's. Bowie was listening to Mandel's album whrn he was writing Hunky Dory. Of course, Ponty and Cobham are giants of fusion. Cobham played with Mahavishnu Orchestra until Narada Michael Walden took over, who then went on to write for and produce Whitney Houston.

Great video, Dillon. Never heard most of the mentioned records, time to get digging. And I have recommendation of my own - Mingo Lewis - Flight Never Ending, face-melting cosmic jazz-fusion, mostly instrumental. The only solo album by talented percussionist Mingo Lewis, who played with Santana on Caravanserai and Love Devotion Surrender and with Al Di Meola on many albums. The older I get the less I am listening to guitar driven rock. Almost all of my rare rock hardly gets played. I listen to to a lot of stuff that is easy on the ears or something to chill to. You should make a list that is out of the ordinary. Like great sounding Reader Digest box sets or nice elevator music. No, I am not joking. Once people listen to it they find that they like it. Just my opinion. And yes, a lot of Readers digest box sets are very high quality vinyl pressings.

Lot of classic rock/early metal is reasonably priced. The Floyd, Who, Zep, etc albums are pricey, but if you take a short step down in popularity - BOC, Alice Cooper, Montrose, etc - you get albums that are just as good, but regularly in the $10-$15 range. You covered a lot of blues rock like Harvey Mandel. A ton of that stuff is great and can be had for cheap - Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher, Pat Travers, etc. 70s Jazz fusion like the Billy Cobham and JLP you mentioned also tends to be cheap. Tons of great stuff from Stanley Clarke, Passport, Tony Williams, etc. And the slightly less popular funk bands can be had for good prices. You mentioned Lakeside and Mandrill. War, early Commodores, EW&F, BT Express, Cameo. There are so many, and their records can usually be had at really reasonable prices.
