One thing I love about California that many people don’t know is how diverse its landscapes are. Just outside of Death Valley, you can find the Mojave National Preserve, where the Joshua Trees stretch as far as the eye can see. It’s such a unique and surreal place-quiet, expansive, and perfect for stargazing at night. It's crazy to think how different the landscape is just a few hours from the coast!

You are kidding with this list! Places like Fresno and Salinas having incredible high crime rates! Los Angeles and San Francisco are totally overrun with the homeless. Victorville is out in the sticks. You will drive for hours to find work!!! I only agree with San Diego.

Homes in California are far more expensive than the video says. I just sold a home in Carlsbad for $1.5M (a starter home with 3 bedrooms/2 baths 1500 sf) and purchased a similar home in Murrieta is $750k. And Murrieta doesn’t have near the social things to do as I had in Carlsbad.

I unfortunately live in an unsafe area in Sacramento. I do like T, U, and V Street in Sacramento and the streets that run off T Street. I like southern California the best because the beaches are closer when you don't have a car and rely on public transportation.

@@JF42795 LOL, a lot of people assume Sacramento has nothing because of the stereotype Cow Town given although it's the fourth largest metropolitan in the state just behind San Diego. You cannot have this many people and not have a nightlife and decent choices of people to date. Downtown is where nightlife is at and yes beautiful people live here. Oh, by the way I used to work at Folsom. If you were based there you did something pretty good because you don't stay there for a few months. You probably got what we called fish bags. It's a brown bag with all your medicines we give out when you are discharged. I worked in pharmacy there. I hope you never find your way there again. Take care and happy travels.

They use Santa Barbra county stats to describe the cost of living in Santa Barbra itself. That significantly skews the data and makes it seem much cheaper than it really is in Santa Barbra given that over 75% of the residents of the county don’t live in Santa Barbra itself and nearly half don’t live in the Santa Barbra metro area either. The most populated city in the county is Santa Maria which is about an hour north of Santa Barbra. It’s the cheaper city for a lot of people who work in San Luis Obispo county.

Fresno and Clovis that's funny. Oakland I understand, people that have never been to Oakland have never seen Claremont, Piedmont, Rockridge and Oakland Hills. It is a beautiful City. I did live in Murrieta, it is pretty incredible and amazingly beautiful. Victorville is a crap hole. Seriously, you should switch out Victorville, Clovis and Fresno for Santa Rosa, Tiburon Ca, St. Helena.

Clearly this list is based on a statistical analysis with skewed data and being completely oblivious to the realities of some of these places. The authors of this article could not possibly have actually visited Oakland, San Francisco, and Victorville. As for the big cities - LA is great, if you're in Brentwood or Beverly Hills. San Diego is great if you can afford La Jolla or Point Loma. The city of Santa Barbara is totally unaffordable, and Newport Beach? That may be the most expensive city of all! Urban SF? I used to attend regular conferences in SF, but nobody holds them there anymore because nobody is willing to go there! Downtown SF has the most aggressive panhandlers I've ever seen and downtown SF has become a ghost town for business. They've all boarded up and fled. And In 'n Out, California's fast burger icon, just closed down its first location ever. In Oakland.

I doubt the towns north of Sacramento want to cede. They are too dependent on the rest of California. Without California, these small towns couldn't afford to build roads, police, or firefighters on their own. They do not generate enough tax dollars to sustain themselves.
