I got really lucky. My job gave us a $25 gift certificate to a local grocery chain. They had their Thanksgiving Day sale and if you bought a ham, you got a turkey (up to 18 pounds) for free. So, of course, that’s what I used it for. I ended up getting an 8 pound ham which I canned into 10 beautiful pints of ham chunks last night. And bonus, an 18 pound turkey which is going into the roaster to can as you previously showed us. I’ll be interested to see how many pints I get. I’m cooking for basically one and I’m working thanksgiving so this should put a lot of protein on the pantry shelf for food security. Total out of pocket cost for 26 pounds of protein? $7. That’s a win thanks to my employer. I’ll take the win. 😉

It makes me so sad that people need videos like this because of the insane inflation but also SO thankful that there are people like you to show us how to do more with less. You're the best, and I hope you and the family have a wonderful Thanksgiving! ❤
@jessmunguia5283Ай бұрын
It isn't inflation. Inflation is on target rn. Its just corporate greed. But yes, I agree with you, food is expensive.
@daisyxfaithАй бұрын
@jessmunguia5283 inflation, corporate greed, a combo of both... bottom line is people are suffering while the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It really sucks. :/
@jessmunguia5283Ай бұрын
@daisyxfaith when inflation was 9% in 2021, high prices were absolutely caused by inflation, although that happened all over the world bc of the pandemic. It wasn't as bad as the whole decade where inflation was between 12% and 19% in the 80s, but for the younger generations (myslef included), 9% was a lot! The problem is, when inflation started to cool, companies kept raising prices. Only a handful of companies own all the food in this country. Some are making 700% profit!! It's ridiculous. Now that inflation is at target, no one should be inflating prices. Prices will never go down in a healthy economy. That's deflation, which is just as bad as high inflation, but they should have stabilized earlier this year. It would be nice if the government would control price gouging, but now that won't happen for at least another 4 yrs... but yes, you are absolutely right. Food is too expensive! Imagine what will happen when the people who come here seasonally to pick our produce are deported and kept from work visas. All i gotta say is save your pennies now. The odds are we will need it very soon. It is refreshing to see how much you can get with so little with some creativity! I have seen ppl complaining about the "quality" of the food she makes, it's ridiculous, it's good and healthy food but makes a good point. Everyone should be able to get fresh ingredients! Imo frozen/canned is better as I always waste money on produce that goes bad before we can eat it, or i freeze it anyway, but we all deserve to be able to afford the fresh stuff if we'd like. Prices for produce, even frozen/canned, are gonna go a lot higher. I definitely recommend stocking your deep freeze before January. I am not being political here, just telling what I learned in economics. Anyway, this is a great content creater, she's really amazing!! Does great things with the minimum, my mom would love this channel.

@christinechandler3701Ай бұрын
You are absolutely right, but some people only have the $20 to spend and don't have the extra dollar or two. It's an unfortunate reality of the times. I think it was interesting that she chose to go with the ham and show the trade-off's that you have the consider. Do you get more items and pay a "worse" cost for the ham or do you get the better deal of the turkey but have to leave other things out of your meal. espeically when shopping for a meal like "Thanksgiving".
@sallyperrie3007Ай бұрын
Putting the turkey back was mmmm not the call. It would have fed people for a week. It also feels like Thanksgiving. I do believe if you’d done turkey, which you could have made real gravy with and mash and maybe stuffing and real green beans with maybe a can of cranberry sauce would have felt like Thanksgiving and provided a lot more food. I pare and slice carrots into coins (I don't like baby carrots, just a personal preference) and I then simmer them in orange juice while the liquid almost evaporates and until they're fork tender but not mushy. I then pop in some butter (maybe 2 tablespoons) and some salt and pepper, I then let that kind of glaze the carrots. When it's done, I add fresh, torn basil and some orange zest. It sounds odd but it's so good!

They will get small cans of turkey with not much turkey in it and make a turkey casserole or something but there is just a lot of bread in the dishes and little else. Yours have vegetables and meat which is far better for you. Also you don't have to stick with traditional meat. Get a roteserie chicken if that is cheap and have it with vegetables and baked potatoes......It's all about spending time with family and friends and enjoying a meal together and not about having a 'traditional meal' with a turkey.

I consider myself a very good shopper when it comes to getting stuff on sale or deals, but every time I see your videos like this, I am still amazed when you do the pan over view to show EVERY thing you got for the $20... it just makes me think of the people who say, "food is so expensive. Its cheaper just to grab fast food". All that would have probably cost your family of 5 people over $100. Last time I looked at a fast food advertisement, it was about $15/person... and absolutely NO nutritional value at all. I love how you called Dusty "Boo Boo", and he just smiled and said I love you. I love all your videos and I hope they reach as many people as they can to teach them all the little tidbits of wealth you share. Have a blessed day! Later Taters!! 😂

Mama, you can always make sweet potato pie! It tastes so much better than pumpkin. Brown sugar, vanilla, and pumpkin spice do the trick. Good job on dinner!

Im from uk, we use chicken instead of turkey. Cheaper and it’s what we like. I would swap the muffins for stuffing and have roast potatoes and mash. Probably maple carrots and parsnips. Peas Mini Yorkshire and puddings gravy. Desert maybe trifle or vanilla icecream. All depends on the budget and what’s available. You did a great job with the budget ! Full tummies are the goal 👏

You can cook canned green beans down and put no salt in them. Just add water in the beginning and them cook them until the water is almost gone. My mama taught me how to do this. They end up tasting like a pot of beans you’ve had on the stove all day and the salt in the canned beans settles with them. I’m from Bristol TN. I can tell by your accent you aren’t far away ❤

Just a tiny little hint that I learned in home economics class. When you’re making a cake and you’re going to have to flour the pan, save back a few tablespoons of the dry cake mix! Some people aren’t bakers and they don’t have flour up in the cupboard. But you can set back a few tablespoon of cake mix!

Heads up Amazon is selling Butterball turkey for 49cents a lb. I just bought 2! Frozen vegetables 12oz bags starting at 79cents a bag. Great prices if Amazon delivers in your area.

That looks fabulous! Other cheap sides for a future video are deviled eggs, twice baked potatoes, and homemade baked mac and cheese with 99 cents pasta and shredded cheddar cheese.

For you baking pans, have you tried “pan goop”? Equal parts flour, oil and soft shortening whipped together. Smear it on any pan with a pastry brush. Never any sticking especially with a Bundt pan

😂😅😂😅 before you took the basting brush out of the pan i was thinking "why does she have a lighter in the water?" 😂😂

Brooke, Squeeze your cans shut to keep from critters getting their heads stuck in a can. My grandma saw a cat with a can stuck on it's head and now I always remember that.

I’ve learned over the years that it’s more about the gathering and spending time with family and friends than the food. I quit cooking all day years ago to be able to be with my kids and relax. Back when I cooked everything I was too tired to eat or not in the mood to gather. Now I make a meal bigger than the average meal but I don’t go all out.

I decided to not cook this year and get so tired like you mentioned. I will cook for my husband and me and the two kids that still live at home. One of my adult grandsons and his girlfriend looked relieved when they found out I wasn’t cooking. They already had a few places to go. I don’t want anyone to feel obligated to come here. I’m mature enough to realize that once kids are grown, they can get spread too thin and I don’t want to be anyone’s stress. I can cook for them some other time. I’m thankful for the ones who love me enough to call and visit when it isn’t holiday related. That means more to me. My oldest adult son said he just wants me to cook him breakfast on one of his days off work. He’s a truck driver. One of our adult sons (we have 6 kids between us. Not counting all the grandchildren and great grandkids which are mostly still babies. I had two. Hubby had two and we adopted two) lives about two to three hours from us so we don’t get to see him often because he’s busy with work and I think still taking college classes. So I understand people are busy. We see him when we can. He knows we love him. Lol! I think I’m going to make something like this for us. I saw someone make some stuffing balls instead of separate meat and dressing. I’m going to try that and then some sides.

My gentle suggestions for your consideration: Powdered milk is ideal when baking bread. Try apricot preserves instead of honey on your carrots. Drain beans and boil potatoes alone in the bean juice, then add beans at the end if you like a firmer bean texture. Your videos are inspiring, and I hope they encourage people.

Thanksgiving algorithm sent me this video. Being our favorite holiday that falls around a few birthdays we spend a lot of time and $$ on the meal. That being said, I'm SUPER impressed with what you pulled together. It's a great reminder that it doesn't have to be fancy or fussy. Thanks for a great video and reminder. ❤

I worked with a man once that was pushing down his trash in his trash can and sliced his hand open on an opened can lid. Since then, I always put the lid down in the can and push something like paper towels down in the can, then I put the can in a grocer bag and tie it up to go in the trash. I always remember that man.
