Just because you had an awkward interaction with the first guy there is no need to jump to conclusions. As you saw later, others were happy to approach you. Some people just freeze when they know they are being filmed, probably because they have limited English & don't want to be embarrassed. Also buying stuff for random strangers who can afford them , could also annoy them especially when they know it's being recorded.

People in Sri Lanka may be poor. But they are proud. Most of them will always help a tourist and treat as guest not as customer. Thats why they sometimes dont accept tips or dont like when you buy things for them. They dont want to be in your debt
