I so agree about the backward books! Such a strange ideas that books can clash with your decor.

Also agree! I commented on backward books before - but I find the idea so absurd I had to comment again. After wall to wall carpeting in a bathroom, the dumbest design idea I’ve ever heard 🤷🏻‍♀️ :)

Home stagers turn the books backward so viewers won’t be distracted by the titles. But you can still see that books go on those shelves. There are essentially no books will will offend no one That said I just sold a house I staged myself. I removed most of the books. Left ones that were in good condition and their covers complemented the room and they were not controversial. But I didn’t shelve them backward

21. Rugs around the toilet or on the toilet seat. 22. Shiplap. 23. Barn doors. 24. Geode crystals. 24. Those ubiquitous brass salt/pepper grinders. 25. Kitchen open shelving that’s staged to death. 26. Good wood furniture that’s been painted or “Easy-Offed”. (I love authentic scrubbed pine. This isn’t that.) 27. Fairly lights. 28. I should probably include rustic pottery, but I’ve collected actual interesting rustic and indigenous pottery for decades, so can’t honestly complain about this trend. More for me to scoop up at yard sales in the future.)

Geode crystals do have a proper place: in a cabinet-of-curiosities-style study or library, preferably near the Natural History shelves. They then serve as reflection pieces when you are contemplating the wonders of geology.

A further thought on signs - as a young teen I had the “desiderata” up on my wall and lots of pop stars pictures …. for a VERY short time of our lives when we are trying to be like all our peers! We then quickly grow up and rip them down! I think this is the only time they are acceptable!! Ha ha!

I love your channel! I really agree with the whole books turned backwards trend. Its not functional, you have to spend a ton of time turning them only to spend the same amount of time looking for a single book. Plus its just not very interesting to look at or experience in a space. I also get annoyed when people have a bookshelf with no books on it. I know that its meant to be shelves that displays whatever you want but it is called a bookshelf and is just a personal preference of mine.

For nice hardware on a budget, check to see if you have a Habitat for Humanity RE Store in your area. They often have super low prices on excellent hardware (among other useful things). I bought great, original art there for less than $25, lamps, side tables, dishware as well as stuff to rehab the house like tile, light fixtures, etc. The list goes on & on and it's a worthwhile cause to support.

I have a very wee mirror ball hanging in the front room. It was a treasured ornament from Bronner's in Frankenmuth that I got when I was pretty young. . It's around 2 to 3 inches wide, and makes me smile when I see it pick up some light near the ceiling (it's way up there!). Someday it will be moved I'm sure, but having it has made me grin for years :).

I agree 100% on all the ridiculous decor that has become a trend. The only one that I have a bit of indecision with is Art. I think if you pick Art that means something to you, then that should be ok in your home regardless if it is Mass marketed or original. I love to support local artists and have several pieces from local artists, but I also have some pieces which are mass produced, because they speak to me. I have a couple which remind me of our trips to Japan but are mass produced. They are beautiful and mean something to us. As a Bookaholic who grew up loving books and treasure my books, why would I put them on a shelf “backwards”. I don’t get it! Art and Books are my loves and mean a lot to me. Excellent video Garrett as always ❤🤗🇨🇦

I agree with the mass produced art if it's paired with curated original pieces. Its rare to find the home that has the pop art postmodern aesthetic, where the mass produced Andy Warhol prints or comic book posters work WITH the space. But I've seen several houses where it's nothing but mass produced art and word signs, and _that seems devoid of personality_ to me. Although, as mean as it seems, some people really are just lacking in personal style and they need to be told what to like, or buy the basic popular things. And i suppose that works for them, but its not very appealing as a home outside of staged stores.

I honestly don't understand the backward book trend. I am a historian & value my books so much. The personality of what books one curates, one should be proud of. An interesting room where a guest enjoys looking at your collections seems much cozier to me.

I think what makes a space look cluttered is when the walls, trim and fireplace facade are all painted white and the decor is the only thing in the room with color. This makes every piece a focal point and compete for attention with every other piece so the viewer's eyes never have a chance to rest. This happens no matter how uncluttered the room actually is. Better to have one item in the background to match so that they are pulled together and become a set.

I have looked at old map drawers, which would really work with many shallow drawers. However, those are outrageously priced. Any ideas are appreciated. It would be for the master bedroom. I am considering tool chests that could be painted or modified in some way because they are so much more affordable. I would appreciate you covering Jewelry storage in an aesthetically pleasing way. Thank you!

So i'm going to push back just a little bit. I'm definitely with you on random word art signs that literally state what room you're in or "home" "coffee" etc. But I do actually like meaningful words as decor. For example, I found a lovely etsy artist that created a beautiful wall decal with one of my favorite quotes. As a big book lover, I do like decorating with quotes in 1-2 places around my home. If words mean a lot to you, i'm definitely pro strategically placed word art of that variety, as long as it serves a purpose

Thanks so much Gloria! The problem is when I started the channel about 18 months ago and soon after we bought this home, I did not do before pictures and also I'm curating space by space which takes time because I plan, do detailed sketches which I revise, and I'm picky about everything. Many things are sourced from all over the country, and the world. We are currently discussing whether to have the formal living room done with Venetian plaster or a lime wash, and the color. I'm also about ready to order a new sofa not that the ones we had showed any wear, but I came up with a new inspiration for that space. It might take six months or more to get the sofa made and delivered. Things like that are the reality of fine design. I don't do the quick makeover routine in my videos because planning and sourcing takes way longer than that so as not to look generic or typical in my opinion. I will probably do a complete house tour when the project is fully completed. However, I have done room reveals. :)

I agree with all your points... they are so spot on, except I still think a giant backless clock ( with just black roman numerals or other traditional looking font and the hands ) would look cool in a large empty wall in a minimalist house in say, a breakfast room or kitchen. I guess I like the way clocks look anyway and a super giant one turns it into 'art' for me.

I almost spit my coffee out when you said, “Those kids will risk it all.” 😅 Your, “Love that for you” is a perfect response to someone who may not have the same taste as you. I’m definitely going to use this. Having said all of this, I became a subscriber last week.

I don't like clutter in the entryway! When you walk in & there's a bunch of shoes, coats ect. I'm lucky that I have a coat closet which I've installed a sturdy shoe rack. My two college kids are now good about putting their shoes away in that closet👟

I am an avid crafter with ADHD! So I cannot resist glitter in all sizes and mica etc etc . But it all stays in my craft room. My friends are only exposed to it when they enter my craft room😊. There they enter at their own risk!😅

I followed your advice to use an attractive box to hide the remote controls etc. I don't know why I never thought of that. I used to use an open container of some sort but the closed box is much better at reducing visual clutter. I really do not need to have remote controls on display. Thank you!

I so agree about the fake trees, but my mother adored them, had them all over her house, and I inherited them...so my kids and I each took a few trees and I am destined for the rest of my life to move them around my home looking for that perfect space. I can't get rid of something which makes me smile and think of my mom every time I dust it, adjust it, and bump into it. Garrett, I really enjoy these videos. Thanks!

It has been such a crazy week I haven’t been able to watch this until now - four days later.😢 100% agree, especially about glitter. My granddaughters are in their teens now and I still occasionally find glitter in my house from their childhood when everything they owned and wore seemed to come with glitter. Thankfully they are also anti glitter now as they are very eco friendly now.

💯 w your commentary on the backward books! I’ve always thought that such a blatant proclamation that you don’t read (& have no intention to ever read) can even be a trend. Not only is it weird, it should be embarrassing.

*Books* . I have a small book shelf in my entry way. I color coordinate the spines with palette of the season on the top two shelves. If I'm vibing with earthy neutrals, my OCD will go into overdrive with a color outside of my palette, so spines are backwards on the lower shelves. I know what's in there and it works for me. I thrift books to coordinate with my palette, it makes for interesting decor and interesting reading.
