I think you have to be careful regarding scent. You do not want any bad odor such as litter boxes or stinky dogs. But it can be equally off-putting when you burn strongly scented candles or use "plug ins" in every room. The synthetic scents give me headaches. I was once in a home where they different scented candles in each room. I couldn't wait to leave the home. It also made me wonder, what are they trying to cover up?

The guys who installed our new heating/cooling system commented that our house did not smell like dogs . 🙂 We had four dogs at the time & my routine was always to air the house daily , kept their bedding & them clean , etc. The conversation came about because a worker commented on my saddle , bridles & boots in the music room by the piano - we laughed about " country living " lifestyles ! 💟

You made my day with this comment Laura so thank you, totally agree. Many scents nowadays have unhealthy toxic substances in them. Synthetic smells like lemon usually bring metallic headaches and to be honest, scientist still cant explain how smell fully works but they know alot of our modern particles that are getting in there aint healthy but conglomerates do not care. Just like Yes Original suddenly became unpleasantly overwhelming a year agoish and the rest of my surroundings didn't notice anything it turned out they had changed the ingredients (ignoring the smaller testgroup that did not respond well to the scent since the majority didn't take any notice). Most candles are garbage nowadays, yes just like weave and other things (look it up) and those wallplugins should have been banned ages ago from an environmental perspective.

Totally agree. Whenever my family get something on the burner or pungent food is cooked, I insist on turning off heat/air and opening few windows for few minutes along with exhaust fan. I feel odors can lodge into the furniture. I dislike lots of plug ins or candles, one candle is okay on occasion. Fresh air is best. If there is something that smells, find it and clean it out of the room. Febreze gives me a huge headache and I really dislike my husband using it. If the weather is not freezing I will open the window.

my mother-in-law is a architect interior designer. I'm a bit more of a rustic cozy or escandinavian style and she is 'modern-chic'. Her house is so perfect it makes me feel like I have to apologize for existing. I cannot sit relaxed in the sofa, there's always this sense of fear of 'messing the house'. You nailed ALL my pet peeves! 💜Loathe cold floors (and cold countertops, too). Cannot tolerate perfumed/artificial smells (did you know how toxic these perfumes and chemicals are? Very.) No curtains (fishbowl feel). Overly minimalist feels like a museum, not relaxing at all and I get no sense of the person or how they live, which is a bummer as I like to get to know people better when I'm in their home (missed opportunity when they hide themselves overly IMHO). Same for too crowded, not relaxing at all. Harsh lighting, yes for sure. Great video.

Smells are such a huge thing for me. It can really make or break an experience when visiting someone. I remember when we were buying a home, there was one house that had been sprayed with so much Fabreeze that I could barely walk through the entire house. I don't even remember what the house had looked like. Smells are so important. In the Fall and Winter, I like to make a simmering stove top potpourri. It's so pleasant and so simple!

I have a lovely friend whose house is a little disheveled but inviting mostly. I couldn't put my finger on what was still making me feel uncomfortable. I realized there are lots and lots of rustic solid wood pieces and fixtures, which I like for quality's sake, but it makes everything feel hard and cold. My other friend's house makes you think they are still moving in. Nothing on the white walls, kids toys inside closed clear plastic totes on an industrial-looking shelf, perfectly separated, very clean technically, but the kitchen is always untidy, when I visit. It feels like a "just business" kind of environment, which can happen when you're trying to keep a house clean and minimal with 3 kids. I like to think I have a nice balance.

I’m limited to opening my windows frequently, because I have horrible seasonal allergies. The pollen is very high where I live. I hate it when my house smells like food, except a fresh bakery. So, we got an air purifier. It’s been game changing. Not only does it help my allergies, but it makes my house smell like almost nothing. Once in a while, I’ll get someone visiting saying my home still smells like a new build. My home is 3 years old now.

One thing that’s frustrating about most design KZbinrs is assuming that everybody has a certain space. For example - not everyone even has an entry way. I don’t have a house. I live in an apartment. There is literally no entry way. You walk in and the living room is right there. It’s like if you don’t have a huge home, and you live in small apartments/studios, we often times do not know what to do with our spaces bc a lot of these design tips aren’t applicable to us. Even “decorating on a budget” is still too expensive for a lot of us.

We installed curtains in our home and it completely changed the feel and look, to the point where it felt like a different house, in a good way. We built our home with my mother and father in law and have bamboo, laminate and tiles and while the flooring may seem cold we do offer our guests slippers which helps to make our home more inviting. I recently updated our entry and it feels much more cosy and welcoming. We actually used an old piece of furniture we were going to donate but once we moved it into the entry on the way out of the house it became an entryway cabinet and it now looks really beautiful. Lovely tips and they do make such a difference. I may need to relax on the cleaning 😂

Realtors, on Open House showings, often bake brownies or cookies for that inviting smell. Floral smells are subjective. But who doesn’t like the smell of warm chocolate (or “apple pie” by putting cinnamon and nutmeg in a small pot of water warming on the stove)?

A smell that took me awhile to figure out came from my three-quarter bath. I love tub baths and rarely use the shower. The smell emanated from the sewer line. A teakettle of hot water poured down the drain did the trick.

I don’t have a designated “entry way”either. I’m sure many of us in regular to smaller sized homes have the same where we just walk right into the living room. I still organize the shoes with a little shoe rack and have a cute rug at both sides of the front door. I have a large front porch though, so I like to include that in making it fee welcoming though. We can work with what we got 😉.

Re odors. Lots of ways to address without scents: WASH your curtains, couch upholstery, rugs. De-clog drains you don’t even think need to be dealend, put baking soda in your refrigerator. Wash your oven throw out old carpets, clothes, or anything else that has just accumulated your human smell too long. Wash your pets at least twice a month-ignore vets who say that isn’t necessary. It isn’t for their health. It is if you don’t want to smell like a vet. Wash dog leashes and collars. Cook with a window open. I do like the use of air fresheners, but particularly the clean linen fragrance. A small trick you can do before company: boil some water with your favourite air freshener or even cologne/perfume, or just a lot of lemon juice, and it will fill the air. Let it vent a few minutes before guests arrive. Similar to baking cookies.

For me the most inviting is the general atmosphere of a home. It gives me a more intimate account of who these people really are, as individuals and/or a family or a community. I prefer cossines to strictness even if that means my kitchen doesn't look perfect when my best friends stop for quick coffee. On the other hand I love to decorate my home for special occasions, holidays and even just in general, redecorating. Different lighting options, colors, fabrics and pattern, rugs, plants and flowers... Bring it on! ^^ Combined with lots of natural light and a good airflow, all I need is some nice art , music and scents (candles, incense). If it's possible I'd prefer a good location and outside architecture but I think I appreciate a good space solution even better. As of most univiting mistakes people make in their homes I'd have to say are bad smell, clutter, garbage and mouldy bathroom hand towels. The mouldy hand towel is my limit :D Posh Pennies thank you for this video. Best of luck!

I like this video but have to disagree with the idea of a minimalistic home as seeming too cold due to being too clean. I think the way you design and decorate can make a minimal home cozy by having natural elements such as plants and wood items and adding a nice throw, area rug and candles. Just my opinion :) I love a clean and tidy home and I am no way minimal but I have been decluttering and have been styling with the intent of creating a cozy atmosphere and also keep my coastal vibe I love.

Pet smells are more of a problem than we pet owners want to admit. I don’t realize how nose blind I am to the smell of cat in our apartment until I go away for a few days. Our place is so small that we have to keep the litterbox near the front door. Even though we keep it clean, the smell is noticeable and unavoidable. (One of several reasons we don’t have people over very often.) Similarly, my sister’s place smells like her dog no matter how often she cleans. Actually, I notice dog smell in all my dog-owner friends’ homes as well. We’re all nose blind

I think wall to wall carpeting is the worst thing you can put in a home. If you have ever taken up to replace old carpeting and see the nastiness underneath........you wouldn't have it.

I immensely dislike the whole Scandi/minimalist look. A place where you're afraid to sit down on the furniture or even stretch out on the sofa. It definitely has a soulless/no character vibe to it and you can miss me with that nonsense. I like a house that's immaculately clean and tidy but the decor has to be inviting and welcome and plush and comfy. All white or all beige or some other variation of only neutral tones and colours really puts me off and it would feel like I'm living in a hospital room. No thanks.

I saw a video of a woman pulling in to random houses, opening the front door, grabbing the purse from the drop-off zone, and driving away. After that I don't have a drop-off zone by any door that leads to outside. My drop of zone is in a drawer inside a bedroom not close to any doors.

Things that have made me feel uncomfortable in other peoples home: any overpowering smell whether good or bad, hard uncomfortable seating or no seating, pets jumping all over me or laying on top of me while I’m trying to sit down or visit, extremely cold or hot temperatures, clutter all over the place especially in the areas where we are visiting or eating, dirty or dingy looking hand towels in a bathroom.

Dirty cabinet fronts & baseboards. I can't tell you how often I've said; "oh thank you, but I ate already." And overhead lighting... it immediately tells me that there's a possibility that the person is blind to nuance, atmosphere & self awareness. That may sound snotty, but it's true. Are we doing surgery or eating? No faint music in the background during a dinner is right up there w/ overhead lighting. I mean, if you're looking for something it's understandable, but if you're just sitting around having a conversation it's awful.

Even if the towels aren't actually dirty, but are damp, it turns me off. And while we're on the subject of bathrooms: Make sure the toilet paper isn't down to the last few squares. I hate having to go through someone's cupboards for a fresh roll or rummage around in my purse for a tissue.

I am always so worried that I have becomed nose blind to the smell of my 2 dogs and cat! I open windows all over the house every day, try to have fresh lilys by the door and clean the floors to make sure I can reduce that as much as I can. It can be hard though, especially when your pets start getting older and health issues start to appear

Sometimes I ferment buckwheat groats to make bread, and oh boy, that can stink up my home!! The whole downstairs can smell like a giant fart after a day and half of fermentation. But sometimes I make soap, which makes my house smell really nice. I just don’t open the windows often due to living on a busy highway near a gas station.

If someone is afraid to drop a crumb on the floor, the house is "too clean." A little mess and a dust bunny here or there isn't the end of the world. But yes, dirty is another issue entirely.
