Gorgeous! One note: Distant Drums was hybridized by Griffith Buck of Iowa State University in 1984. Weeks is just one grower that distributes it.

All your roses look very healthy. Do you spray anything to help leaves looking so green?

Apology for missing your question from a new KZbin studio user. Usually no need to spray anything before the first flush of blooming (spring flowers), but fertilizer is recommended in the fall/early spring. After the 1st flush of blooming, some spraying could be needed, e.g. insecticide, fungicide; sometimes I also spray epsom salt solution

How do you protect them during the winter? What do you do?
@GardenZ55 ай бұрын
So far the only winner protection that I did was mounding soil over the crown (adding new soil not just piling from the base). I usually used manure compost. I didn’t do pruning in the fall. Be reminded that the varieties that I planted are suitable for zone 5 and no special winter protection is required. I added a few new roses this year. Some of them are still small, not looking very strong, or belong to a warmer zone. I am thinking about using plant winter protection cover but that could be expensive. So I am considering to do something as recommended here: extension.unh.edu/resource/winter-protection-roses#:~:text=its%20winter%20covering.-,Tie%20the%20canes%20together%20with%20twine.,%2C%20shredded%20leaves%2C%20or%20straw. Happy gardening.

Lovely collection of roses ❤ Can't decide between Munstead Wood, Celestial Night, and Ebb Tide. Help😢! Which one is darker and more burgundy, please 🙏?
@GardenZ52 ай бұрын
It’s difficult to choose indeed. I can share how they do in my garden and hope it helps a little. Color: Munstead Wood is a red rose (deep red) while Ebb Tide and Celestial Night are considered purple roses. But in warm climate (even on summer days in zone 5) Ebb Tide and Celestial Night look more deep red with purple tone. As it matures, Ebb Tide turns into smoky purple but Celestial Night won’t. In the early stage, Munstead Wood and Ebb Tide’s color look darker than Celestial Night. But then Ebb Tide changes to purple, Munstead stays deep red, Celestial Night is deep red with purple tone. You may want to consider other attributes. E.g. Blossom: Celestial Night’s shape are beautiful throughout; Ebb Tide doesn’t look good when it matures; Munstead Wood is better than Ebb Tide. Scent: Ebb Tide is the most fragrant! Very pleasant. Munstead Wood is the second. Celestial Night is not as fragrant as them. Plant Growth: Celestial Night is a compact and upright bush while Munstead Wood is the largest bush of the three. Be aware that Munstead Wood is overly thorny. Celestial Night and Munstead Wood are more vigorous than Ebb Tide (in my garden).

What do you for black spots , because of so much rain in Toronto area some of my roses are infected now. Do you spray something ? Your roses look so healthy
@GardenZ52 ай бұрын
Unfortunately this year I experienced the same issue as you and I heard the same complaints from my friends. This video was taken from the 1st flush of rose blooming throughout June/early July when my roses didn’t develop black spots. My roses started to develop black spots around end of July. I was too busy to spray anything. The leaves dropped but new growth appeared. They still had a pretty good 2nd flush of blooming. In late August when I had some time I sprayed fungicide for a few days in a row and the progress appeared to slow down but I was too busy to continue with regular spraying. I decided to leave it as, just remove the infected leaves. Next year should do regular spraying earlier.

For Constance flower plant so you need to cover up in the winter?
@GardenZ53 ай бұрын
Last winter it was potted and stayed in the garage for the winter. I transplanted it into ground this year. For the upcoming winter, I am planning to just mount the soil at the base of the plant because it’s listed as a zone 5 rose. If you cover it up, that will give it a better protection for sure. I will find out if it does well in the zone 5 winter like the other DA roses.

If only keep one, which one would you choose from those three: Munstead Wood, Darcey Bussell, Celestial night?
@GardenZ52 ай бұрын
It’s hard, they are all beautiful roses. It really depends on personal preference. Scent, color and bloom shape wise, I like Munstead Wood the most. But it is overly thorny, not ideal for cut flowers and not friendly for my cat. I would drop it for my cat but wouldn’t drop it because it hurts my hands. Both Darcey and Celestial night have similar nice fragrance and are less thorny. They are both healthy and vigorous plants but they are different in other areas. Darcey can grow into a large bush while Celestial night is an upright, compact bush; Darcey’s blooms are bigger than Celestial night; Darcey is red while Celestial night is of purple shade (reddish in warm climate); Darcey gives me a feeling of country rose (free spirit) but Celestial night more of a garden rose look. Despite Celestial night’s flowers are smaller I like its bloom shape more (personal preference). When Celestial night blooms all at the same time it’s really impressive. Between Darcey and Celestial night, I would keep Celestial night for its purple-ish color, bloom shape and compactness. I hope this gives you some idea of each rose. Happy planting.
