No manual choke needed here. Just takes some cranking to bring fuel up, then the auto choke takes over. All original.

The Slant Six is one of the all-time best engines from any manufacturer. Today's V6's don't hold a candle to it. Glad you're keeping this one on the road!

It took 8 times trying to start this 225 slant six engine. Reminded me of our brand new 1980 Aspen had the same problem, finally the mechanics told us its the design, its not a problem. I think its an awful design to drain the battery in cold weather. One more thing i like to add, I remember there was a warning tag stickers at the sun shield saying that after several gas pressings before starting, you should keep pressing the gas pedal halfway while starting in very cold weather, he didnt do that.

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but the memories of those sounds! 68 D-100, 225 with a single bbl Carter and a hand choke, when I was in college. Coldest natured engine I ever had, but I loved it. And the starting tries...the spinning starter bendix, oh yeah. That's why it went through a starter about every 6 months. I'd have them rebuilt, and carried a spare starter, lol. Good thing was, I learned to change the starters in about 15 mins! The biggest issue I had, though, was the slave cylinder, which would go out about every year. With a 14" hoghead clutch, when the cylinder blew, you were stuck. And it took two people to change it. Still...I miss that thing sometimes.

I know this is an old video but I needed to hear what an old Slant 6 start up sounded like, again. My grandma used to run us around in her '65 Chrysler Fury with the Slant 6, 3 on the tree and a manual choke. I can't ever forget those days. She perfected getting that car started and having a cigarette at the same time.

My buddy had a slant 6 in a pick up with over 300,000 miles on it that he used in his plumbing biz, I use to work on it from time to time... then sold it and it was still seen runnin' around years later. Might still be out there somewhere.

Thanks. Unfortunately this one came from Pennsylvania, so it's pretty crusty. This car came with the Holley 1920 carb, but I swapped on a 1945 and it has ran excellent ever since.

Mine starts with one pump when cold and straight up when hot, does boil the fuel out of the bowl though. 309k and counting its my daily. Slight mods mostly a custom 254/248 cam at 112 degrees, dutra duals and autolite 2100 with 1/2 inch spacer. Yes it has a ford carb, gives me around 20% more power and same economy at 287cfm vs a holley 1945s 185-200 cfm Soon stepping up to a Sniper EFi BBD and twin turbos off 4bt cummins. 8.4 to 1 cr means I can deck the head down .050, and still be low enough to throw respectable boost at it.

@TylersNeighborhoodGarage Жыл бұрын
Carbs don't go "bad". You should rebuild it. It's a Holley 1920. It is pretty simple and will teach you a lot about carbs even if you have to do it a couple times.

Why do you keep letting the engine die?
@snoman0036 жыл бұрын
Ok then, ditch your strategy of "pump and crank". The original choke on the "leaning tower of power" was notorious for malfunctions. Install a manual choke , pull + tap twice and crank...then adjust choke. If that dont work as intended, check the accelerator pump of the carb or fuel pump delivery volume. These engines were extremely reliable, except during a "cold start" situation or during damp/ very wet times, when the plug wires would get wet. Carry at least 1 ballast resistor and a can of WD40 in the car at all times....a fun car to drive than can be tweaked to unbelievable performance.
