You did an effective job utilizing the low grade items available. I'd gone with a pair of scissors - instead of the little multi purpose wanna be Swiss army knife. The large trash bags / lined with grass and leaves between many layers you might be able to make a sweet lil' sleeping bag if weather deems it necessary! The $1 store paracord was the best item of all my opinion. Some could survive with that alone ! Lol

That silver pocket knife you bought has a good chance of the pin breaking and the individual layers holding the knife together will come apart on you. I have had that happen to me with 4 of those knives of the same kind. They are definitely not meant for anything more than very light camp use.

That is a good selection of stuff for anyone suddenly having to live in their car or truck because of a short-notice emergency evacuation or flooding that takes out a bridge or a landslide that blocks a road. I would add the following things to my dollar store survival kit: toothbrush, dental floss, bar of soap, face cloth, underarm deodorant, hair comb, small bottle of Dawn dishwashing detergent, extra pair of socks, cheap Mylar emergency blanket and a cheap plastic rain poncho. These items will help keep you clean, dry, odor-free and healthy (yes, you can use Dawn like shower gel as well as wash dishes with it). If I had more money I would also add some small votive candles with one glass holder (light one candle for heat and light inside a vehicle), a metal mug for each person (for hot beverages or soup), a small metal bowl for each person (for serving meals), a box of plastic spoons, a package of wooden chopsticks (for turning frying food, for eating solid food and for kindling) and a Thermos-like container (for keeping food and beverages warm for hours so that I could get two hot cooked meals each time I cooked one meal over a campfire). I would also add some boxes of whole grain trail bars or breakfast bars and some bags of roasted nuts for quick, no-cook meals when it is raining. A small jar of instant coffee and a small container of sugar would be good for morale.

And if you've got a runny nose, they can be used for that.

I came across that same paracord at my local Dollar Tree the other day. They had a couple of colors - black, maybe yellow ant the teal you showed. I went with the teal. I'm sure it isn't 550 but does it really have to be that strong? I'm sure it is plenty strong. The thing is I have bought so-called paracord at places like Home Depot and instead of individual, inner strands it has a core made of loose, nylon 'fuzzy' fibers that aren't much use and the ends of the cordage don'y melt to seal very cleanly. Not knowing what to expect I cut one end off the Dollar Tree paracord and was pleased to see it actually has seven, individual inner strands.

$3 in firestarting, either the 2 pk of lighters or the matches enough. Bed roll with the shower curtain and paracord to carry the items so can lose the trash bags. Also, if you really want trash bags you have the plastic bags provided free at checkout they put your stuff into. You have plenty of time so a cover not really needed to boil the water. You have the duct tape so lose the gauze and the med kit which is mostly band aids anyway. So $6 more of additional items can be added. Add feminine hygiene pads for bandages that can be used with the duct tape. I'm going with $1 of Ramen, two 5 oz bags of trail mix, toilet paper and antiseptic hand wipes.

I have a couple myself, and they are really a good value. They have a carabiner-like clip on top, a brace to lean on the ground, and two light choices: focused beam and diffuse lantern. They take 3 AA batteries, put out a decent amount of light, are pretty durable, and the light lasts a good long time. Good choice!

Rice and Lentils is my first choice food as well. I would have looked for a container of cooking oil to add to that. 1/4th cup each lentil and rice and 1 tablespoon oil is about 450 calories (1/4th cup is about 50 grams of either lentils or rice they weigh out almost the same). He did pretty goods on his pick in that store. Did not get the pocket knife which was the smart move. As they break really ease . In mine they sell the little danish cookies in the tin and some other snack in a a tall tins . I would grad those . 2 for one. They also sell glow stick 4 to a pack which i get for when the power goes out the craft section some time have tins in them along with some other things . that may be helpful. Glow in the dark stars to mark tree at night to help find you way foam board make a nice bedding . heavy foil can make a blow and cups add duck tape to make a water pouch . solar lights . petroleum jelly has so many uses. It may save your life in so many ways .

I sprung for a card multi tool. Did everything it said on the tin and more. Still have it to this day. And you're right about getting glow sticks. If you're going to be out in the wild for 10 days or longer, something with batteries are not necessarily the best option. Besides, if you bought two bottles of water, one can be used as a lantern. Water disperses light over a wide area so you get better coverage. I put the glow stick in, the water acts as a coolant, slowing the reaction time of the chemicals, so you get more light for longer.

Instead of the shower curtain I would have bought a flannel back table cloth for a shelter if you don't have tarps there. The table cloths are tough. And for cooking pots I would have bought things in cans then used the cans for a lot and lid...in many sizes.

Based on my experience with dollar tree swiss army style knives I would have just gone with the kitchen knife and if there was one available some sort of sharpener, that thing will not hold an edge long.

I got a Coban type wrap at the farm supply for a dollar a roll. That is a great buy for wrapping over an arm or leg injury. Dollar Tree also has evaporated milk and flour.

Put the matches in one of the ziplock bags to keep them dry and ditch the lighters. Rice and pasta use valuable water, and unless you are planning on reusing the water for cooking again, I'd find something else, but you will then need two bottles of water. One for drinking and one for using saved water from cooking the pasta/rice. Just a thought

I love going to Dollar Tree but I would have grabbed two tarps, the red crazy glue, the 7 day candle, just the 2 pack Bic lighter, a container of oatmeal, the regular rice and lentils, 2 cans of spaghetti sauce because I can use it for cooking after, 2 paracord, bigger water, bandanas, folding knife, can opener, pasta, poncho, emergency blanket. That's also based of what mine has.

You could have gotten some candles. They do well for both fire starting and light. I would like to see some family of four 3 day MRE challenge. Three meals per day, an entree, a side, a sweet and a drink for each meal, plus two snacks each day. You could give a dollar limit as to how much you can spend or a weight limit (light weight for ease of transport and storage).
