Canteen or water bottle. You can get rice or pasta meals in the grocery section that will be just as good and you simply rotate out every few months. Instead of close to $20 for 4 meals (remember when you open the dehydrated bag you list 30 years of storability), you could get 5 to 10 meals for just a little over $1 each. Use the $10 saved to upgrade shelter, etc.

Decent kit, well thought out. You're absolutely right, great start. Almost any item on that could be improved on. First figure out what you like and what works for you. I'd put in sleeping bag, and tee-shirt. Good starting kit. Bic light, storm matches, Mountain House, all hard to improve on.

For the bug repellent, you can often find pure citronella oil. My last little jar was about $5. Ticks hate it. It works better for me than any chemical tick repellent. Another thing you might already have in your kitchen for bug or spider bites is meat tenderizer. The enzyme that tenderizes the meat also breaks down the poison in a bug or spider bite. Just a little mixed with water to make a paste and rub into the bite. I've personally used it for bee stings & a brown recluse bite. The doctor said she's never seen anything work better.

Good kit for the project. Something I would have done differently is the fishing hooks. You can get the eagle claws with leaders already attached, they call them Snells. these are good because in a stressful situation trying to get paracord through that little hook eye can add to your stress level greatly. Not to mention loss of coordination if you happened to have fallen in a cold river or snow ect. Something to think about.

I might have looked past it in the comments below (someone might have brought it up already), but if you replace one of those small water bottles with a Smart Water bottle, you can connect the Sawyer Squeeze to it. The Sawyer doesn't fit the threads of those smaller water bottles.

Opinion inbound, take for whatever its worth. I'm eagerly awaiting the testing vid. What you did right: Bandana, lighter, wipes, Sawyer, gorilla tape, headlamp, FAK, and the contractor bags. What you did wrong: You got tunnel vision on sporting goods and spent too much time and money there, and not enough in the rest of the store. Anyone buying a machete in these vids may as well put on a shirt that reads "armchair survivalist" and is likely the source for Matthews comment below. What you neglected: Smaller knife, water container of useful size and durability, hand warmers, hand sanitizer, signalling device, insulation, work gloves, navigation. I own that tarp. Its overpriced and undersized. More contractor bags paired with the tape would have offered better shelter and options for a browse bed and blanket, as well as emergency rain suit which can be stuffed with browse for insulation. Hand warmers are too cheap and effective not to add. A frightening amount of our body heat is lost through the head, especially considering your hairstyle. Get something thicker than that cap to sleep in. I've used that uncoated cookset. If you do anything besides boil water for those MH meals, you will regret not having a scraper or scrub pad. A bit bulky, but closed cell blue foam mats can be had for cheap and pair wonderfully with that mylar blanket beneath them. A better nights rest directly translates into more capability the next day. Most bushcraft injuries are to the hands, add some work gloves to protect them. Another common one is sprains or twists. Add an ace bandage and either bring or cut trekking poles. You may have GPS on your phone, but a map and compass dont need batteries or signal and are easier to take notes on. Kitchen would have offered a better quality pot for cheaper, as well as an option for a smaller and actually useful knife. Assuming you do catch something with those fishhooks (550 inner strands do not thread into hooks easily, and will likely scare off the fish), are you going to try to clean it with that machete? The hatchet next to it would have been a better choice for practical tool and still came with a ferro rod, but you could have had both cheaper separately. Your shelter lines do not need to be 550 test, kite string from toys will do the job and you will pay less for more cordage. For what you paid for those 2 MH meals I could have eaten for nearly a week from grocery. Those tiny water bottles are too small, too fragile, and wont thread onto the sawyer. Two liter bottles will, are cheaper, tougher, hold more, and come with 2 liters of beverage with calories in it. Pharmacy would have had rubbing alcohol, vaseline and cotton balls. That FAK will need additions, including a small mirror for checking injuries to your face, back and nethers. Also grab a whistle for when you get yourself into actual trouble this kit wont cover.

why would you spend 18 bucks on freeze dried food that give you 4 meals when you can pend 8.50 on 10 Ramon soups. you dont have a canteen, and this really not a 100 dollar kit when you stared adding stuff from home.
@PilotPatriot Жыл бұрын
Ramen has basically 0 calories....you need calories in an emergency meal. There is a water bladder in the sawyer kit so that covers the canteen. And you got me on adding a pair of socks, trash bags, cotton balls and a bottle of water...guess you gotta call it a $102 dollar kit

A $10 dollar bag? A $12 knife that has a fire steel included that was made in China then transported across the world, so it probably cost $5 to make the bag and $6 to make the knife, this is like taking a hundred dollars and throwing it in the trash, I’d rather take that hundred dollars and buy a decent bag to put random items in I find along the way
