Like idioms, English euphemisms are figurative in meaning. We use them to soften uncomfortable topics, such as aging, politics, money, and more.
If you've ever wondered, 'what are euphemisms,' this lesson will help. You'll learn 20 common euphemisms to describe people and aging. And a clear understanding of euphemisms vs. idioms.
For example, we might describe someone as
- over the hill
- well-seasoned
- a late bloomer
- a wallflower
In each case, the euphemism is used as a more polite way to refer to a sensitive topic or trait.
Given that euphemisms don’t rely on their literal meanings but rely on a common, shared understanding of the meaning, they can be a challenge to decode.
With this Confident English lesson, you’ll be able to understand
and easily use common English euphemisms in conversations about aging and describing people.

Great job. Just a quick suggestion: it would be very helpful if you have one slide at the end of the video for the summary so we can take a screenshot and remember it otherwise they all get forgotten.

1.Even though I got some gray hair over my head, I'm still at my golden years. 2.My college roommate was a little bit free-spirited when dealing with issues. 3.We'll all kick the bucket once she's done with her makeup! Thx for this nice video, learned a lot! If i made any grammatical mistakes, pls let me know!

Thank you for sharing your examples, Summer. Let's review the first example. To be in one's golden years means to be old and to have one's gray hair might also indicate being old, so these two parts of the sentence are redundant. If you review the lesson, is there a euphemism we can use to say that one has gray hair? I would recommend trying to find an alternative for this sentence "Even though _________________, I know the latest trends. "

Again, a lovely lesson, Annemarie. I believe sometimes it's better to bend the truth or be economical with the truth because not everyone can manage with it. As we tend to say in my country "truth hurts". Paraphrased sentences: 1. Even though I have some snow on the roof, I know the latest trends. 2. In college, my roommate was free-spirited and had some eccentric ways of solving problems. 3. By the time she finishes doing her makeup, we'll all be six feet under.

Could you please make a video about a conversation with a service company? For example, if your washing machine is not working and you need to call customer service and book a technician. I wonder what phrases native speakers use for these phone calls.

Hello, Annemarie. Thank you for sharing this important topic on how to speak more politely on some sensitive issues such as death and aging.. Btw, I am an English teacher in Indonesia, and one of the topics covered in my syllabus is describing people. I am wondering whether it is polite to describe someone as being bald and fat. Do English has more polite words or expression for those two words?
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Describing someone as fat would not be appropriate in the United States. It's far too harsh. Instead we might use "on the heavy side" for example.

I have another euphemism talking about death which is “ push up the daisies “ is it right or not?
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish Жыл бұрын
That is another example of a euphemism, Rose. Thank you. Like the example 'to kick the bucket' this euphemism is very, very casual/informal and used in humorous situations; we wouldn't use it when someone is grieving after the death of a loved one.
