Great lecture! How these rules apply to this example: "You look great in the picture" instead of "You look great on the picture"?
@arashvashagh6659
@arashvashagh6659 Жыл бұрын
Using "in" with "picture" is similar to using "in" with a container, because a picture can be seen as a physical space that contains objects, people, or scenery. So, we use "in" to refer to things inside the picture, just like we would use "in" with a container to refer to things inside it. On the other hand, we say "on the picture" when we are referring to something that is physically on top of the image or written on the surface of the picture. For example, "There is a signature on the picture."

Dear Annemarie, you are awesome! Thank you for your materials and explanations! I still have a small doubt related to the next sentence: “I think she lives on the fifth floor, in Apartment 402”. My question is linked to the “IN apartment 402” part of that sentence, why not "AT the apartment 402", since it´s the more specific address (point)? Thanks for your time! Big hugs.
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind note and question. While 402 is the apartment number, an apartment is still something like a container or something with borders/limits. Just like a building. Even though we are giving the specific number, it's still a specific 'container' or apartment inside the building. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the question. I've heard both used and for many English speakers there may be little to no difference. However, one could also use "on Excel" to describe creating the Excel program while working "in Excel" is to use the program.

I watched a video years ago that said that for example If you're friend called and asked you where you are If you say you are at the hospital, it means you're visiting someone at the hospital means you're not the sick... But if you say am in the hospital it means you're the patient staying in bed.... Is it correct?.. Please explain

It also depends on whether you are talking about a political place or a geographical place. It is "in Iceland" if you mean the country, but "on Iceland" if you mean the geographical island. So, have you arrived in Iceland or on Iceland? They are both correct, but have different meanings.

Could you help me? I'm confusing about the preposition. Thanks a lot 1/" in Wall street " on "on Wall street" I found in youglish. Which is correct and why? Thanks a lot. I know that you were a commodities trader for fours years on Wall Street he never thought he would be rich on Wall Street What do they do in Wall Street? it's all in Wall Street you're in Wall Street 2/ "in the street" or "on the street" You could be someone who lives on the street. we are walking around on the street He's just a kid that they found in the street A ball in the street
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. To be "in Wall Street" may be a reference to a profession, not a location. Without the full context I cannot be sure. If a ball is in the street, it means it's directly in the middle of the street and could be hit by a car. Typically someone doesn't stand 'in' the street because it's dangerous. I hope this helps.
