When I moved to Italy 31 years ago with my first wife, we lived in the country. It was beautiful (it still is!), but nothing functioned properly (it still doesn't). She used to tell our visiting friends (apropos of "caldo" and "freddo") that the C and F on the taps stood for Cold and Freezing!

Alcune osservazioni: - "cancellare" viene usato comunemente con il senso di "annullare" anche in Italiano: "cancellare una prenotazione", "cancellare un appuntamento" - "costume" vuol dire "maschera, travestimento" anche in Italiano; il significato "costume da bagno" è solo più diffuso perché è più comune andare al mare che alle feste mascherate (o, appunto, "feste in costume") - "droga" fino a un secolo fa significava "(erba) medicinale" anche in Italiano; per estensione indicava tutte le erbe aromatiche e in particolare le spezie esotiche, da cui il termine "drogheria" per indicare il negozio in cui si vendevano - "educazione" fino a un secolo fa significava "istruzione" anche in Italiano: dato che solo chi era istruito possedeva anche "buone maniere", i due termini coincidevano e d'altra parte in passato i giovani nobili e/o ricchi non venivano solo "istruiti" dai loro maestri privati, ma anche "educati" (cioè, se ne guidava e indirizzava il comportamento e si imparavano tutte le regole di comportamento di quell'ambiente). Poi altri "false friends" che mi vengono in mente: - stoffa (fabric) e stuff (roba, materiale generico) - staffa (stirrup) e staff (asta, bastone, ma anche "personale addetto")

Te ne aggiungo altri che sono molto diffusi nel parlare in italiano. Confidente viene usato come se volesse dire confident. Corporazione viene usato come se volesse dire corporation. Memorie viene usato come se volesse dire memories. Patente viene usato come se volesse dire patent.

anche nella lingua italiana è possibile usare REALIZZARE nel senso di rendersi conto, ad esempio realizzare di aver commesso uno sbaglio quindi noi italiani lo usiamo in entrambi i modi a seconda del contesto anche PRETENDERE in alcuni casi può essere usato nel senso di fare finta, atteggiarsi, ad esempio ha preso 2 lezioni di ballo e pretende di essere un ballerino provetto ANNOIARE significa 1.Infastidire con la prosecuzione o ripetizione di qualcosa di importuno o fastidioso, tediare. 2. Affliggere. anche ATTENDERE può avere 2 significati attendere nel senso di aspettare ma anche Applicarsi con impegno a qualcosa, dedicarsi e quindi più simile al significato inglese

Auguri! You dealt with a difficult subject very elegantly. A volte è difficile a distinguere tra i significati (near synonyms), p.e. tra (in Holandese) 'pak', 'kostuum' = costume, completo, abito, vestito (?...). Only good usage will teach you this, I suppose. I don't know if it is (didactically) the best practice to put all these meanings together as some people will probably get all the more confused :-)) especially those who are already somewhat insecure, but this video is surely very informative and useful. Keep up the good work. We love it! It is a great help and you are an admirable and amazing ambassador for the Italian language. Your knowledge, style, approach and teaching qualities are huge! Very helpful, as usual! Often, in the case of Italian/English, the words have the same Latin root. So English 'firm' = 'azienda',' impresa' and Italian 'firma' = 'signature'. But 'firm' meaning 'business house, is borrowed from German (also modern German and Danish) 'firma', originally from ITALIAN 'firma', 'signature', from Latin/Late Latin 'firmare' = to confirm (make firm) by signature! È molto utile (come sempre), persino per chi la cui lingua madre non è l'inglese (per me, almeno: l'inglese tende a influenzarmi/turbarmi quanto si tratta di vocabolario straniero) In realtà, i falsi amici di cui hai appena parlato sono anche, per una buona parte, falsi amici tra inglese e francese. Tuttavia, il punto è sapere se sono tutti in modo "famiglia latina" 🇮🇹≈🇫🇷 ≠ 🇬🇧 (la maggior parte, ovviamente), o se alcuni sono come 🇮🇹 ≠ 🇫🇷≈🇬🇧 (“morbido”, come l'ha già scritto Alexandre in un altro commento) o anche 🇮🇹 ≠ 🇫🇷 ≠ 🇬🇧.

Learn Italian with Lucia Nel mio opinione il significato più usato è diventare accorto di qualcosa. Per esempio, “I hadn’t realised it was your birthday yesterday”. Morbido è il più difficile per me, perchè "morbid" è una parola con connotazione così forte! Did you know that "realise" can also be used in roughly the Italian way, to mean "achieve" or "happen"? For example, why does it say “interrompi” to stop my phone timer? Why not fermare or annullare? As you may already know in English it would say “stop” or “cancel”. Before I learned a bit of Italian I learned quite much Spanish. Guess what. The friends were not false. Estacion is acstually a station. Estadio is a stadium. Droga is a drug. For instance. When I heard that straniero in Italian was not a stranger could almost not believe it. As for bimbo I have never thought it had the same meaning in English and Italian. However. Most of these false friends are very confusing. Educazione and education really sounds like they should mean the same. However. As a Norwegian fabbrica is similar to the Norwegian word for factory, fabrikk.

Ciao! As far as Italian-Polish false friends are concerned, another confusing example comes to my mind(especially while describing interiors): Italian il DIVANO means sofa and DYWAN in Polish means il tappeto/carpet (and W in Polish is pronounced as V) so quite confusing as well 🙂

Almeno in certi contesti, cancellare e annullare sono sinonimi. “Il volo è stato cancellato.” e “Il volo è stato annullato.” Tutt’è vero che molti italiani preferirebbero “cancellare” in posto di “annullare” in questo caso.

E usiamo anche la parola "une bimbo" per une ragazza un po' superficiale in francese (in fatti è un anglicismo)... Forse questo ti sarà utile per un video futuro, chissà ;-). Grazie e a presto !

Mi risulta che "bimbo" sia una parola italiana che è entrata nell'inglese e ha cambiato significato in altre lingue. Italiano, francese e inglese si sono sempre scambiati le parole. Per esempio la parola francese "sport" entrata nell'inglese deriva dall'italiano "diporto" (simile allo spagnolo "deporte"), ma poi in italiano abbiamo fatto rientrare il termine nella versione francese. Esiste la "nautica da diporto" per intendere l'andare in barca per svago, ma se ad esempio giochiamo a tennis facciamo uno sport. Anche la parola inglese "manager" viene dall'italiano "maneggio" e ora la versione inglese si usa in italiano per indicare questo lavoro.

Perché nessuno mi ha detto si può dire "cheap" con "conveniente" invece di "un buon mercato"? Hai mai provato creare in una frase per descrivere qualcosa usando la frase "un buon mercato"? Per il tuo elenco posso aggiungere "colloquio" (interview) per un lavoro e "colloquial" (un modo di parlare o tipo di parole).

Actually, "cheap" has a negative tone in English, so it's better translated into "a buon mercato", that also has kind of a negative tone in Italian. "Conveniente" on the contrary is more positive, usually it's used for good stuff that you can find on sale or that has a good quality/price ratio.
