As always, a solid list. In the early 1980's I was in grad school in upstate New York. I was playing the Byrds album you mentioned. The song, "Lay Down Your Weary Tune," was playing. At the same time, a voice was singing the lyrics, in unison with the record, from outside of my apartment, and that voice was getting louder. I opened the door to see my very happy mail carrier. He gave me my mail, saying nothing, other than continuing to sing as he exited the building.

As usual the great English band Family gets completely ignored, Family Entertainment is magnificent, give it a listen 👂 please 🙏. Can definitely add Led Zeppelin, Free, Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Airplane, Little Feat, Mothers of Invention, Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, The Band, Carole King, Van Morrison, Nirvana, Love, Fairport Convention, Pentangal, Moody Blues and oh who could forget The Zombies-Odyssey and Oracle, wow that’s 20 second albums 😅

Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem Nailed me to the floor when I first heard it. I remember listening to the CD for days, at home, at work, in the car. Approaching the parking spot, but "Get Innocuous" still playing and me making some more rounds just so I don't have to stop the song. That same summer I went to see them in Barcelona and the gig was all I was hoping for and more 🔥

Waay excellent list, dude! Never been a big Hendricks fan (I know, ban me now), but love all the others. Here's ten more, in no particular order: "Pieces of the Sky", Emmy-lou Harris, "Back to the Night", Joan Armatrading, "Wild Planet", B-52's, "Pirates", Rickie Lee Jones, "For Everyman", Jackson Browne, either, self-titled or "Excitable Boy", Warren Zevon, "Abandoned Luncheonette", Hall and Oates, "Sailin' Shoes", Little Feat, and "How Will the Wolf Survive", Los Lobos. And, and, and...keep up the good and fun work.

Hi Tom. Somebody beat me to Warren Zevon, my favourite singer- songwriter. Here are some of my favourites. The Incredible String Band, "The 5000 Spirits or the Layers of the Onion." Sheer genius! Terry Allen, "Lubbock on Everything." - Perhaps my favourite double album. Joe Ely, "Honky Tonk Masquerade." John Prine, "Diamonds in the Rough." Van Morrison, "Moondance." (It can be argued that this is his 3rd album but he didn't consider "Blowin' Your Mind" to be a proper album as it was compiled and released without his consent. Itf "Moondance" is considered his 3rd album I'll go with "Astral Weeks.")

I have a label I give a lot of great sophomore albums on my channel. I call it "the second album sweet spot". There is just something about some 2nd albums from great bands. I think it has something to do with hitting a kind of stride that wasn't there on the debut, regardless of how good the debut might be. Then, even if the third album is amazing, there's just some kind of balance that was found on the second LP. Some of mine include: Soft Machine- Volume Two A.R. & Machines- Echo Wire- Chairs Missing Dinosaur- You're Living All Over Me Funkadelic- Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow The 360's- Supernatural Amon Düül II- Yeti Harmonia- Deluxe Eno- Taking Tiger Mountain Hüsker Dü- Zen Arcade Bola Sete & Vince Guaraldi- From All Sides Idaho- This Way Out Magazine- Secondhand Daylight Terry Callier- Occasional Rain Genesis- Tresspass I have more, but those are some off the top of my head.

Are You Experienced was one of the most unique and influential records ever made. But I couldn’t agree with you more that Axis rose to an even higher level above that. David Schroeder, director of the Steinhardt School Of Jazz Studies at NYU, did a magnificent interview with Jack DeJohnette a few years ago in which Jack called Mitch Mitchell one of his favorite drummers because of his playing on Up From The Skies. It’s tough to argue with Jack. And Leon Hendrix called Think I Better Wait Till Tomorrow his favorite song by his late brother, for obvious reasons. I was 10 when Jimi died, but 54 years later I still feel the pain and disbelief at the loss of this titan, and all that could have been had this tragedy not occurred. While Jimi definitely relished the fast lane life style that he was living, and the substances of that time, it was actually insomnia that killed him. He just wanted to get some sleep and took too many of Monika Danneman’s sleeping pills, which were much stronger than the ones he was used to. Two lame brain paramedics lashed him down to a gurney, he vomited and couldn’t breath, and that was it. His loss is just beyond cmprehension to this day. Thanks, Tom, for not only mentioning, but singling out this monumental masterpiece. Chris

I've been trying to come up with some examples of my own, but I think you have it pretty well covered (I was going to rake you over the coals if you forgot Disraeli Gears). Hey, the second Firesign Theatre album, How Can You Be In Two Places At Once? is a big improvement on the first, Waiting For The Electrician. 😆 And the second Tom Waits album, Heart Of Saturday Night, is just a monster of a record! On the other hand, the sophomore offerings of both The Clash and Television were very disappointing. Anyway, thanks for reminding me of how beautiful the jacket of Wild Gift is -- I have one of those record-sized picture frames, and that needs to go up on my wall.

Interesting subject. As for The Byrds, their second album was musically a repeat of their first. It was their third album 5D where they hit their artistic peak, apart from one track Captain Soul. My favorite of their pre-5D tracks is their vast 1964 demos that were on their double CD compilation Preflyte. As for The Doors' second album, most of it's tracks they already recorded live earlier in 1867 which were not then released, but are now on their official double CD Live At The Matrix. Those earlier versions sound rawer, but less polished. I preferred them, but they were barred by their uneven sound quality, like the rest of the tracks. The title track Strange Days, they originally recorded live in May 1966, again not then released, but is now on their Live At The London Fog CD, but recorded in California. It was a great version, only to be barred by it's unfortunate sound quality, like the rest of the tracks there. Another track, My Eyes Have Seen You, they first recorded as one of six demos in 1965, and I preferred that version. As for a further track, Moonlight Drive, the version on Strange Days was their fifth recorded version, but their first released. They first recorded it among their 1965 demos, then they did two outtakes of it during the sessions for their first album which are now among the few bonus tracks on the CD reissue of that album, then they re-did it live, the live version being on their Live At The Matrix double CD. The only two tracks on Strange Days that they did not already seem to have recorded elsewhere were Love Me Two Times, which was not their best, but was ironically also on a single, and the virtual non-track Horse Latitudes, which only lasts about a minute, but just consists of silly noises. When deciding on their second album, they already had most of the songs made.

Right here i'have only 4 examples : - "I'm the Man" by Joe Jackson : the perfect twin of his debut "Look Sharp" but more nervous with great songs , "On your radio", "Geraldine & John", "Don't want to be like that " and the fantastic "I'm the Man" ! These two albums were released in 1979, great year for Joe Jackson; Graham Maby on bass (playing lead) is part of his success. - "In it for the money" by Supergrass : following in 1997 the Britpop era's "I should coco". This album is completly different than their Pop debut, more Rock with a large 70's influence (Neil Young, Faces, The Who); You should (coco) listen to "Richard III", "Sun hits the sky", "Late in the day" and "G-song" with marvellous guitar solos ! Simply their best album. - "Meat is a murder" by The Smiths (1985) : This second album ("Hatful of Hollow" is a compilation) is much better than the first one, better production with fantastic songs, "The Headmaster ritual" (my favourite...), "That joke isn' t funny anymore", "How soon is now" (announcing Madchester and the real masterpiece "Well i wonder" ! - "Transformer" by Lou Reed : following the poor and terrible debut, "Transfomer" is a terrific album (better, in my opinion, than "Berlin"...) with the help of 2 english gentlemen David Bowie & Mick Ronson; "Vicious", "Satellite of love", "Perfect day", "Goodnight Ladies" and "Walk on the wild side" ! Released in 1972 like "Ziggy Stardust", a great album for a great year ! PS : Led Zeppelin II (1969) the same year than the first one, pushes the limits of Heavy Rock, Blues, Folk and Rock : about "Bring it on home" Benoît Feller, a french Rock journalist wrote that the Blues part is the end of the 60's and after the drum break the 70's started.

@@tomrobinson5776 Hey Tom. The first 2 Aerosmith record sold poorly. Get Your Wings almost went unnoticed. In 75 Toys In The Attic exploded with the Walk This Way single. Dream On reappeared ( slngle & lp )on the charts and Get Your Wings became popular.

I don't think Stephen Stills' fingers move that fast any more! Good list, but some classics missing. Some of Rock's greatest albums were sophomore LPs, from the Band, and the Allman Brothers, to the Yardbirds, and Van Morrison. I had to include 25, because I couldn't decide which 5 to cut!
