Thanks for these videos. I’ve been trying to pick up ASL since a recent encounter with laryngitis in recent months. My favorite thing about fall is, well, where do I begin? Foliage! Cooler temperature! Apple season! Hiking! Baking! Corn mazes! Cozier bedding! As for holidays, I take Halloween and Thanksgiving as they come. I get into both.

I have been recommending your channel to anyone interested in learning ASL. I am so glad i found this channel. Your instruction is so helpful! It's brilliant the way you give examples of how to remember the signs (ie: think of it like your arm is the trunk, and your fingers are the leaves). Thank you so much for the work that you do, spreading positive knowledge, and making people like myself feel more confident in signing 😊

Thank you for your videos. As an adult with sensonural hearing loss (hearing aids no longer help), there are no resources for adults (or their family members) to learn how to sign correctly and fluently, without having to pay to take ASL classes (and there really aren't any classes in our area, even if we could afford to do it). We love watching your videos, and it is nice to have some communication back with my family.

I love your videos, and I've learned so much from you!! I manage a shoe store and some of my regular customers are deaf or hard of hearing, and I want to make their shopping experience more accessible to them. I'd love to learn more signs for things like shoes, sizes, and fit. Like, how to express that the size is too big or small, any discomfort it may cause, that leather stretches... I feel like I'm missing so many helpful words!!

I have a question: If one sign means multiple things, do you have to figure it out with context, or is there a way to show.
@LearnHowtoSign2 жыл бұрын
Context is a huge part of ASL because you're right there are several signs that are the same or very similar. Context even helps narrow down what words may be fingerspelled which is super helpful. Speaking of fingerspelling, which you know of a word that shares multiple meanings and context may not be clear and reception of that word is important, fingerspelling the word is also acceptable. Kind of like how uncommon acronyms in English are written out first and shown in parenthesis.

Hello! Fall is my favorite season so I'm happy this video is here. When I first learned the sign FALL, it was one of my favorites because it requires two hands to do. My friend's last name is Brown. Does she fingerspell it because it's her name? Would it be correct to sign BROWN instead of fingerspell it?
@LearnHowtoSign2 жыл бұрын
Great question! When signing proper nouns, you should always fingerspell it.

@laurao32742 жыл бұрын
You would need to pick one to be your dominant hand while signing.
@LearnHowtoSign2 жыл бұрын
Correct, you would need to pick one. Not establishing that while learning would be confusing for you and switching mid conversation would be confusing to the recipient.

I decide to look up sign language vids because, and I’m being serious here, I really don’t think my ASL teacher was that good at teaching (I barely graduated) We only had 2 weeks to practice sign language while talking (that’s 2 hours TOTAL of ASL class time with the teacher in those 2 weeks). After that, we wouldn’t be allowed to vocally talk for the rest of the school year. Her main idea of practice was for the class to meet with each other *outside of class time.* Now tell me, what happens when you only have 2 weeks to figure out a language before you can’t vocally communicate anymore, have conflicting schedules with your other classmates, you can’t communicate nor even understand what the teacher is signing, and you’re basically alone with your thoughts during an early morning? THATS RIGHT! YOU GET SLEEPY! YOU MAY FALL ASLEEP IN CLASS! WHICH LEADS TO BAD MARKS! Imagine my anger, when I find out years later from new friends that they had ASL teachers who allowed them to vocally speak throughout the entire school year.
