My very first gun was also a 870 youth model 20 gauge, I got my first turkey and deer with it, after years of not using it last year I dedicated it as a turkey gun, got a Remington thumb hole pistol grip style stock from midway USA and a fairly cheap sight mark sight and what a great turkey gun, light and great to hunt with, right now I have an H.S strut undertaker extra full choke and use long beard Xr #6s very consistent out to 45-50, going to try the tss before this season side by side, thanks for a great video

Very good 20 gauge patterns. I have tried the Federal TSS #9 in 3" 12 gauge out of my Winchester SXP with a pistol grip stock, 18" barrel, Carlson's TSS choke and the pattern was impressive. That load in the SXP hurts my hand it kicks so hard, the hand takes more of the recoil with the pistol grip stock than the shoulder.

Patterns were always good with the old Fed HvyWght 7s. The new TSS hits even harder and the pattern is quite a bit more dense due to the drop in shot size. I've always told anyone if you're shooting tight chokes when they're less than 20 yards aim at the base of the neck where the feathers meet his head. If you pull a little high like a lot of people do, you still kill him, and if you're dead on, the impact will snap his neck instantly. If you aim at his head and pull when using a .555 choke at 15-20 yards you miss that bird all day. I prefer like you do, a nice open pattern at 40 yards so i know if he walks into 20 yards I can still kill that bird and not have to be annie oakley to kill a turkey at 20 yards. anything beyond 45 yards in my book ain't turkey hunting and is very unethical b/c your chances of wounding that bird or killing the hen 2 feet to the right of him increases drastically. Idc what people say about their gun, and they can do whatever they want but for me 45 yards and in is my go to. I'd rather not wound a tom who could breed 20 hens than take the chance at 50 yards.

A piece of a advice from someone who has been shooting TSS for years before it was available in factory ammo....TSS patterns SIGNIFICANTLY tighter than anything you have seen before. You don't need "turkey" chokes with TSS unless you plan on taking 60+ yard shots. And yes, with TSS and a good turkey choke you can absolutely kill turkeys at 60+ yards with a 20ga. I have seen it with my own eyes several times. The problem with that setup is what you have seen here: an insanely tight pattern up close. A pattern that has resulted in many missed birds and frustrated and embarrassed hunters when the bird sneaks up on you and he's standing there at 15 yards. You have a slug gun at that range. If you hit him you will demolish him but it's easier to miss than you think. Long story short if you are happy with 50 yard effectiveness go grab that old cheap standard "full" choke that came with your shotgun and give it a try with TSS, you might be happily surprised and still stand a good chance of hitting that tom at 20yds as well as killing him at 50. And remember, those dense patterns might be great for bragging rights but it really only takes one pellet to the brain or neck to kill the bird, if you've got 5+ in the vitals at 50 its all you need. good hunting!

Ridiculousness ? To say a .410 can hold par with a 12ga. because of ammo is ridiculous. You shouldn't tell lies like that. So, if I have a 12ga. and I use TSS ammo that means my gun is up to par with a 8ga. right? Totally Ridiculous ? A .410 is a short range gun, nothing more. I had a buddy that hunted with me with a .410 for rabbits, I had a 20ga. He got tired of the rabbits running away with his pellets and bought a 20ga. He bagged way more rabbits with his 20ga. than that .410 ever did. So, to kill a turkey with a .410 you must be real close or plan on shooting them more than once. You can forget about shooting turkeys that hold up on you beyond 40 yards. Even at 40 yards you would still need the magic BB to get one with 1 shot? I would be nervous? 30 yards or less and being still no problem. .410's are great guns for kids and beginners at close range. That's why they make good guns for home defense, close range and hardly any kick. Ammo and gun costs just as much as a 20ga. and 12ga. ? They never used to be, they were always cheaper until the name home defense?
@CalebRyan-TNCx4 жыл бұрын
Tss... allows a 410, or any sub gauge shotgun to hold par with a 12 ga Lead** turkey load. OBVIOUSLY, a 12 ga is superior if it's a level playing field. A 410 shotgun loaded with 18g cc tungsten will be just as deadly as a 12 ga standard lead load at 40 yds and in. Period.
@CalebRyan-TNCx4 жыл бұрын
A rabbit hunting story is completely irrelevant here. TSS is a totally different animal than a lead rabbit load. Higher pellet count (#9) shot provides dense patterns and far FAR more penetration than a 410 lead load. That's the beauty of tungsten.

This is good news for new/young hunters or anyone who wants a lighter option than toting around 12 ga or an "8 ga" as you mentioned earlier (wow).
