Don't throw away dull knives! Usually those can be resharpened with a knife sharpener and it cuts like new again. There's a lot of knife sharpeners that are really easy to use out on the market right now too!

So many good ideas - yes on the writing utensils and makeup samples! I've realized after many rounds of decluttering that I need to STOP buying so much crap in the first place. So this year, I'm doing a year of NO spending on non-consumable items (clothes, books, candles, accessories, home decor, etc.) in an effort to cultivate gratitude for what I have (which is more than enough).

Great vid! A tip about the BUTTON idea: instead of throwing them all away, have a nice glass jar (like a mason jar) and stick every single button you get in there. It can be displayed somewhere & cute or tucked away in a closet...but that way you'll always have an extra button but they won't be floating randomly around/ difficult to find.

In general, I'm not a fan of getting rid of things in order to then buy "better ones", except when it's safer/the original doesn't work anymore. So I'm not really on board with the hangers. If you have a bunch of hangers you don't use, then by all means, get rid of them. But discarding mismatched hangers in order to buy "better ones" seems like a wasteful thing to do (imo). In the end, you do you, but I would not do that.

I've been preeetty good at decluttering, and I'm getting better at purchasing more thoughtfully so less of the stuff I avoid comes in. We just bought our first home and for the first time ever, I have a basement, but my husband and I made a pact that no unpacked boxes would be put in the basement to be forgotten. We will be limiting what can go down there, only necessary items, and no unnecessary storing and hoarding. We're going to try to keep things tidy, organized, and free of clutter as much as possible! Also, no, spare buttons are useful! Put them in your sewing kit! :P I think if you are trying to live more minimally and thoughtfully, lots of people try to repair their clothes and keep them in good condition for longer. Part of that includes having a sewing kit for minor repairs, and keeping some spare buttons doesn't hurt. Plus, getting rid of that button and just buying another one seems a bit wasteful when you already got a perfectly good button for that shirt...I don't know, I guess I sew as a hobby so for me it's worth it and keeping a sewing kit that I go through and keep tidy is part of the intentional items that I keep that bring me happiness and function.

I was with you until you said getting rid of DVDs. No, you can't just get anything on a streaming service. If you already paid for a DVD and you actually liked the film and would watch it again, keep the DVD. If you want to save space you can take them all out of the cases and put them in a binder or I have all mine in clear plastic sleeves stored in a DVD box the size of a shoe box. I still buy DVDs and I'd rather have them in case my laptop isn't working or if I want to bring a film to a friend's house. Also, don't get rid of manuals. Just put them all in a binder. You don't want to be spending hours on the internet trying to track down your exact model number when you could just go to the binder and get the manual.

I had CD/DVD cases that were empty (😳 I know...) so I wound up putting all of our hundreds of DVDs in cases alphabetically and recycled the cases. We don’t buy DVDs anymore but if we have a hard copy movie we want to watch we have two 150-disc cases that my kids love flipping through to find something. No more cases cluttering things up, instead they’re all nicely organized in cases that we’re going to get chucked anyhow. 😉

Another way to keep from getting too many books is just use your library! Most of the time you can get a copy of the latest book you're wanting to read either in hard copy or digital. When you're done, all you have to do is bring it back. Also, I agree with the other comment about DVDs...some things you cant find it online or are a special edition/copy of something. Same with CDs. Some of the one's my husband have are rare/collectible so they hold some kind of meaning. That said, he's really bad about getting rid of ANYTHING. I very much like to live a minimal/no clutter life. It brings me so much more piece and I dont feel bogged down by stuff but he holds on to WEIRD things. Like a bathrobe that he literally never wears.

Alll this stuff is such a good place to start!!! I watch videos like this every day because it motivates me towards minimalism and I think the most important part of decluttering is not buying things that will reclutter your space. It’s scary hearing all this stuff to get rid of! If everyone watching this video got rid of all this stuff (which will be great for them!) but so freaky thinking about the thousands of pounds that go to landfills! So it’s super important to declutter and then not replace the stuff you declutter and learn to live a life with less stuff. That’s my mindset lately!

According to international copyright law, as it stands now, a download code/downloaded media without physical existence (ie, CD, DVD, BLURAY) is not owned by the person that has said download code. You are technically not supposed to even move it from one computer to the other. The court case between Redbox and Disney is based out of confusion on this point. For this reason, I still use disks for now... if somebody stole my BLURAY, they stole from me. If they steal my digital copy, they stole from Disney and I have no rights in the matter. Also, I have come a hair away from losing ALL of my photos/music/videos from 10 years of my life because they were all on a hard drive and paying to back up a TB of data in the cloud is way more expensive than having a couple backup hard drives. Disks are still more reliable and resist corruption better than PC drives or servers at Google or Apple, plus they are ACTUALLY private property. I'm not trying to argue, just giving a thorough alternate perspective for people who don't understand how to back up data thoroughly and what the risks are.

How do you get rid of your items and where?

People always need to remember with minimalism is about only keeping things you love. Below is the reasons I have not decluttered some areas 1. Socks. I love colorful socks and I also love mixed matched colorful socks. I do not sort my socks and only toss out a sock once it starts to seem run down. The only white socks I own are all the same type so I can pull out 2 random white socks and they always be a matching pair 2. Buttons. I am not attached enough to most of my shirts to care about tossing them out if I lost a button. For the few Jackets and Coats, I own where I do care I will place the button in the pocket. If possible I will actually securely attach the button inside the pocket so if I need to replace it I know exactly where it is. Also means I don't need a button jar of any kind 3. Mixed match hangers. As long as your hangers are relatively flat the only problem is looks and as these are locked away in my closet I do not care if they match. Also, I do not own enough clothes to fill up my closet so even a few hangers with horrible shapes would not be a big deal 4. Shoes that give me blisters. Most shoes give me blisters the first time I wear them. I don't buy a shoe I don't intend to wear often. 5. Junk mail. My email already sorts them all out of my inbox. Whenever an email does make it past I do spend the time to unsub 6. Kitchen Gadgets. Some people, like my SO, love experimenting in the kitchen. This often means trying new things. If he wants to make something that a Gadget is technically required, first he will try to make it himself without the gadget. If he enjoys it enough and makes it enough after that then he will buy the gadget. This is why we have a blender, slow cooker, rice cooker, ice cream maker, and a waffle maker. We also have a few more but over the course of a month, we will use each item enough times to reasonably keep it. He is also more likely to use these because he knows if I realize he is not using it enough I might just try to convince him to toss them out. Yes, they take up a bit of space but most stay neatly in the pantry till needed. 7. Books I have already read. I hold on to a few books for decoration. I love the way books look on a shelf or coffee table 8. Pens and pencils. Well yes, I have a lot more than I need today I often find the one time you need a pen you can't find one. This is why I have a bunch of pens in a specific location in my house. When I find one that has gone missing I add it back to this jar and when one is dead I toss it out. Knowing where your pens are also stopping you from uselessly buying more Some people may say I am not a minimalist because I own quite a bit of stuff but everything I own has a purpose and brings me joy. I love my mixed matched socks. I have added a couple years of life to my favorite clothes by keeping buttons. I don't see why I would buy new hangers if the old mixed matched ones don't bother me. I love every pair of shoes I own. Taking the time to unsub from things that just go to my promo folder or my junk folder is not worth it. Every kitchen Gadget I own gets used. I love the look of books. I love knowing exactly where I can find more than enough working pens. For me, the things I own bring me joy and well I could 100% minimalize to almost nothing and still be happy well I live where I currently do with who I currently live with having some things is a must

This is the first video I've watched on your channel. The fact that you started this list with "underwear you dread wearing" is enough to make me stick around for more! Preach, sister!!

Re DVD: all of those streaming services cost money every month, whether you use it or not. I paid once for my small DVD collection and it's free after that.

I started by getting rid of the collection of dead bodies in my garage. In doing this, I also got rid of old buttons, shoes and mold. I feel like a weight has really been lifted off me. All in all, a great weekend.

Thank you Allison this is awesome ! This is the first video of you I've ever seen, and I've been gasping all throughout like "YES, exactly, that's so true !!" Decluttering is going to be my Sunday task this week. But first I'm going to watch all of your other videos =)

Coffee mugs! I'm someone that actively doesn't buy mugs for myself or others because I know most people in the world have more than enough. However, when I was decluttering before moving into our first house we bought, I went through mine and had around 20!!! I was actually disgusted with myself, especially as me and my husband were living in a shared house at the time, and used the same 2 mugs constantly. I sold/donated the ones that weren't a practical size and that I had no sentimental attachment to. Now I have the right amount for us plus guests.

Just found you (subscribed) and am midway on my journey: realised I’ve done far more than I thought when I was able to check off (almost) everything on your list. Mortified and how much stuff I’ve decluttered.

I was just doing some of these last night. BUT i have to disagree with the buttons one because they literally do not take up space. I have my Grandmothers button box where she saved the fancy extra buttons. It is really neat to look through them and you can see the decades of styles through them. I have used a few for crafts too.

Chole'_Love Yes! I take them out of the plastic and put them together in a dish!

I have a container of them that about an inch wide so it really takes no space. I think it's more the idea of getting rid of something you thought you may really one day need but is relatively inconsequential. If it makes you happy, keep it. If not, ditch it!
@MichiruEll7 жыл бұрын
I currently keep only the buttons that go with pieces of clothing that I still own. I've used them quite often to repair clothes that I love, and I'm super glad that I had those extra buttons.

its so important to remember to not just toss all of these things! dump is appropriate for expired toiletries and old underwear but alot of these things are better repurposed or passed along to someone else. Be mindful of what you throw away, too!💖

I have to disagree with receipts- keep a box on your desk if you don't want to see them or have them look cluttered. Digitizing is an extra step when they really don't take up that much space. I cannot tell you how many times I've decided to return something or had an issue with a credit card charge and have been really happy I saved the receipt! I also love buttons and save them to do crafts projects!

How much trouble does it take to snap a photo? I hate paper clutter, even if it's hidden, I'd just as soon not have it if it can be avoided... I even scanned a lot of my paper stuff, including my previous years' income tax documents to pdfs so I could shred them. The result? I don't need a filing drawer anymore!

LOVE this. I definitely need to work on decluttering....I'm definitely a bit of a hoarder of random things. I have stuff from when I was a kid, or in school that I swear I will need one day aha. My problem is that I have sentimental attachment to too many things. Slowly and steadily purging things!

Great list Allison. I just went through my pantry and had cake mixes from 2009. I also am getting rid of an ice cream maker that I have only used once in 20 years and an expresso machine. I am keeping my receipts and buttons though......baby steps.

Yes, I am all for decluttering! However, keep the items that you love. Toss DVDs that you do not imagine watching again, but keep the ones you come back to once in a while. Throw away dull, old knives but sharpen the good quality knives and use them again. Do not buy new hangers, but toss the broken ones and learn to fold the clothes properly to save space. Useful ideas, subscribed!

A quick tip about beauty products samples : don't hesitate to turn down any that you know you are not gonna use and ask for some that you will use. I usually say (with a smile and an please ;) that i dont really care for perfume samples and ask if i can get (fewer usually) of a brand that i like, a product i do want to try or a product i already have, so i can have it for a week end away. Obviously samples are not very eco friendly, so be mindful about it ;)

Out-of-date probiotics, enzymes and herbal powders should be thrown by use/by date, but I just found out that supplements in tablet or capsule form will last 20-25 yrs and dried herbs,possibly 10 yrs. I have them all around my room and poked in little places. One of my worst habits is buying seeds (all kinds) and not growing them, but I can't throw them without trying them at least, so they wait and wait for the ground to be dug. Nice vid, thanks, Allison.

I got rid of all my manuals a while back. Before I discarded them, I search online for the same manual. (they all have a code on the front page so that helped), then I saved the manuals to my computer or the iCloud. That is it. Now if I ever need them. I can just look on my computer. It has helped with my paper clutter.

How did she know some of my bathroom lotion bottles etc. have dust on them, and how'd she know I have Dvd cases without the movies, how'd she know to make this list that I have needed to have forever. Was on the road when I watched it and couldn't wait to get back to start every item on the list, then I'm moving on to her more detailed videos. I LOVE HER. Really thank you for taking time to help others with what you have found worked for you. These are all excellent ideas you gave us. Simply put and made it seem very easy so here I go.

Switched out all of my hangers for new ones, which are much better because they have rubber on the top so clothes don't slip off. Plus, all of the hangers are the same colour - so much nicer to look at.

I had to laugh when you mentioned the buttons. I don't think I've ever lost a button because I've caught them when they were loose. I love that Office Depot will email you a receipt. Target also does if you order something online and pick up in store. All of your items are spot on.

One thing that really goes with #11 is to not buy books! Go to library instead. I only buy books if I have already read them (like from the library or a friend's copy) and I want to reread it. That way all the books I own are ones that I love and will read over and over again :)

something i found helpful to de clutter dvds and cds is to get rid of the cases and just put them all in a CD/DVD binder! you can keep them AND save space :)
@laurafoster327yt7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've done this because I still have some CDs or DVDs that are special edition or autographed. I also don't have Netflix or anything like that, and even if I did it's not guaranteed that an episode of an older show will be available when you want to watch it.
