With all the talk of declutter and minimalize, we might overlook the advantages of duplicate items. My point is that sometimes adding is more of an improvement than subtracting. If you live with a stairway inside your home, you might prefer two vacuum cleaners, one on each floor. The same goes for cleaning products and basic tools like a hammer and screwdrivers. I have a delightful front porch where I love to be in Summer. I have a painted wood cabinet out there as part of the decor. It is a handy place for paper towels, basic tools, dog brushes, extra reading glasses, scissors, trash bin, etc. That way I need not run back inside the house for incidentals. I also bought extra garden hose and fittings to supply water from the side of my house to my porch. That gives me convenient access to water my flower pots, wash the deck, cool myself down, rinse off the doggies, etc.

Clutter is a habit. All my life I was terrible about leaving dishes in the sink. (The funny thing is that I don’t hate doing the dishes, it was pure laziness.) Within the last six months, I made a conscious decision not leave dishes in the sink. At first it was tempting to just leave that dish, but stopped myself. I don’t leave the kitchen until the dishes are done and put away, and it feels great. Whatever the habit is, make a conscious decision to change. You’ll surprise yourself at how successful you will be.
@tarynmaria_11 ай бұрын
That’s awesome, thank you for sharing!
@valkyriesardo27811 ай бұрын
One thing about leaving dishes in the sink is they do not improve with age. The dish is easier to wash immediately after use and before the food dries into a hard crust. Cooking pots might have to soak. But you raise the most important point. Every item in the house requires a conscious decision. You have to decide where it belongs or it will float around in space. When everything has a designated space, the place is easier to clean. I still have herds of white elephants in need of assignment.
@karenbrauneis429011 ай бұрын
@@valkyriesardo278 I totally agree with you. Unless I have an item that is soaking, at least I always rinsed the dishes in the sink when I left them. That is ingrained in me. Having done without a dishwasher for part of my life, and also the way I was raised. Yes, I’m one of those who washes my dishes before I put them in the dishwasher. I use my dishwasher for sterilization purposes only. Not only does it extend the life of dishwasher, cut down on maintenance, end smells, it also has health benefits. I had been dealing with colds, flu-like symptoms, etc. After purchasing the new washer, my health dramatically improved. You are so right about things having a dedicated space. There is an old saying, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” These days we have too much stuff. We need to declutter. Easily said, not so easily done. I’m slowly working on it. This is perhaps my biggest conscious decision of all. Now that I know it works, that helps some. Good luck with your white elephants. Well tackle them together. 👍🏻
@amg916310 ай бұрын
@karenbrauneis4290 Repeatedly over the decades, I left dishes in the sink to the point of totally disgusting no return. I knew that no matter how many times I might have attempted to clean these disgusting dishes, pots/pans, utensils, I would never feel safe to cook and eat from them... So in the garbage can they went. So wasteful, which I hated! So I realized a few years ago, I should only keep 1 of each thing out and accessible for my own use (i.e 1 fork, 1 spoon, 1 plate, 1 bowl, etc.) so whenever I needed it again for the next meal, I was forced to clean it. This seems to have helped me quite a bit. Because if I had 4 bowls, I would use all 4 in a matter of a few days and they would then lay in the sink getting stinky and nasty and I would not want to clean them (as aforementioned). 🤷🏽

My mail is delivered to a mailbox on the front of the house. Just inside the front door I placed my old baby wardrobe from the 50’s. I took out the hanging rod and added adjustable shelf brackets with just a single shelf to that area. I also added a grommet in the floor of it so I could put a smaller shredder under the shelf and run the cord out to the wall outlet. I have a file box with monthly hanging files in that area as well. The two lower drawers hold paper recycling that doesn’t need to be shredded (I used to have to sort it between glossy and other paper, but no longer). The two upper drawers hold office supplies, greeting cards and stationery. I have a shallow bin on top for the current issue of favorite mail order catalogs I still get and a small basket with postage stamps and return address labels. A page-a-day tear off calendar is also on top. When mail comes in I immediately shred the junk mail with my name and address. For bills paid by check I paperclip the return envelope and bill only to the date I intend to pay it on the tear off daily calendar. Inserts go in recycling if they don’t have any personal info. When I pay bills the stamps and address labels are right there and I file the paid bill in the monthly folder. I’ve been using this system for about two years and it has worked like a charm for me.

I like the idea but it cannot work for me. I cannot pay when bills come in because I cannot maintain a buffer in my bank account and an overdraft will sink me. My life is ruled by direct deposit checks. My system is keep or toss incoming paper. The keepers go into a designated box pending income which happens twice a month. Then I sit down with my box and my spreadsheet to calculate what gets paid on what day and how much cash remains for shopping. Paid bills are filed. Unfinished business remains in the box.

The bag inserts kept getting destroyed so, I got those strong, reusable clear sandwich-style ones. (They are awesome.) Also, I regularly fill up the car with stuff for Goodwill. (They charge for pickups.) THIS is what reminds me of all my progress😓🥲. (We do Not lend, sorry. Too many bad experiences.) The clothes are all over the bottom of the bed so, it MUST be put away prior to the next wash🧺. (Otherwise, more pile up!) Clean as you go🎶, clean as you go. 🥂 .

I keep my spices on lazy Susan’s and they are alphabetical so always easy to find. If you are short on space try buying your spices from a bulk store and buy only what you need for the period of time they stay fresh. Label pint sized freezer zip locks (the type that press to seal not the slider top type) and write the spice name on the label area. Using a paper punch, punch a hole in the lip beyond the seal in the upper left corner. Corral them in alphabetical order with a hinged key ring and you can hang your entire collection on a hook inside your pantry or cabinet.

Right always take occasions to declutter very fast. For example: on the occasion of getting your new groceries - before you make the new purchase declutter your fridge and give it a fast wipe. It is very easy to do if the refridgerator is nearly empty. If you put the glasses from your dishwasher in the cabinet look for items to declutter. Maybe you have glasses which you do not want anymore and never get them out. etc...

Where I live, you can put a sign on the letterbox saying, "No advertising mail" or No junk mail", and you won't find any. The other matter of continuously washing dishes throughout the day wastes water, as I have to run the tap (faucet) until it gets hot. Instead I half fill the sink with hot water & washing liquid, then everyone can put their things in there to soak. Then I wash them & a quick rinse. Top up the hot water if there are many dishes. It's easier than having running water the whole time. Or pop them. In the dishwasher.

And secondly: never put dishes into the sink if it is not needed (because it needs a soaking etc). Thirdly: when ever you have to wet your hands (eg if you have to wash your hands or to wipe something with a wet towel) wash some of your dishes. Oh my god, I loved hearing Taryn mention throwing the shampoo bottle into the sink from the shower (I do the same.) And then cracked up hearing the bottle gets thrown down the stairs. LOL. So funny and so real.

@@tarynmaria_ I love your video - thank you! Great ideas. How well does the robot vac clean up close to the walls, please? My kitchen has lots of little crumbs that accumulate under the toe space beneath the cabinets. Will the robot get those crumbs, or will I still need to sweep there, please?

I wash dishes as I cook. I cook Indian food. So when I have the lentils in the pressure cooker I wash some dishes. When my dal is boiling on the stove, I clean some dishes. So by the tome I finish cooking, I would have finished with most dishes. Only those that need soaking would he left. This way I wouldn't stare at a mountain of dishes after slaving over a hot stove.

We access batteries so rarely that I keep my bin of batteries at the back of the bottom shelf of the refrigerator. I always know where they are and the bin itself keeps me from shoving left-overs into that hard-to-see, harder-to-reach area.

I think these were good ideas, but I don't really get hanging your jeans that way. By folding them in half, aren't you actually making them twice as thick, meaning your closet won't hold as many? I hang all my jeans and pants with wooden pant hangers, with the 2 clips (the way they are often hung in stores). And a question about the shoe basket; are these a sneakers and casual run-around shoes? I'm just thinking about my husband tracking leaves or dirt on his shoes and then him just dumping them into the basket on top of my flats. Don't most people just keep their shoes in the closet? Other than that, I enjoyed these ideas. Thanks!
@tarynmaria_11 ай бұрын
Hi! With the jeans - I have found that the hooks take up less space than the hangers so even if you fold the jeans, you can still fit more because the hooks are so small. And yes - the shoes! Those are mainly kids shoes and casual shoes in the basket. I don't put any of my nicer shoes in there but I'll definitely toss my sneakers in :) Thank you so much for commenting!!

I never buy anything right away from Amazon unless it has sat in my saved for later for at least 6 months cool down period, *Unless* it is an item that has just been used up or broken, then it doesn't have to sit because it is a 1 to 1 replacement.

Don't need to buy clear bins, I reuse the ones salad comes in. Now they don't come w a lid😢+ R mor flimsy, so just dbl em. Regret tossing the better 1's esp w lid. Excellent 4 spice" packets. Also th clear plastic bins berries, cherry tomatoes come in. OMG, 4 fone chrg. cords, sml toy pieces, marbles, beads, make-up sponges, batteries stand up (DON'T use shoebox, drains batt) evn use in handyGAL tool box drawer to org. Nuts, bolts, screws etc. Can lift out & have near my project evn! (can remove lid as needed) Magnetic spice($1store) n knife mag. are space saver + protect blades😊 Grew up fairly poor, learned 2 make most of wat we had. Mom evn took hem outn button's/zippers off old clothes, then cut N2 quilt pieces or make "rag rug". I've hardly bought foil/clear film, wipe off n put on empty paper towel roll.

Were I live, we simply put the postoffice free tag that says "NO UNADRESSED POST, THANK YOU! ". (In my language :-) The post man then will see too that we do not get advertising and unaddressed envelopes and newspapers in our door mat or in our mailbox. The postoffice must respect this. 99% of paper clutter is not happening. We’ve had this arrangements at least for 10 year, if not longer.

The shoe basket makes no sense. People (aka kids) will just dump it to get to the shoes on bottom or they'll forget about the shoes on bottom completely.

You can opt out of most junk mail as well as national DO NOT CALL list. Opt out has reduced our mail GREATLY. We also are going "paperless" & put UL bills etc on auto-pay. Saves u th clutter, better 4 environment. No worries but auto deposit pay. I keep sum cash out 4 going out 2eat n misc. Major groceries & gas is calculated ahead 4 the month. ALWAYS ask if discount 4 paying in cash, or any senior discount, etc. Almost all we wear come frm thrift stores & evn thn we try2 stick2 DAILY DEALS. TRY2 sell or donate bout same amt. as wat is brought in. I prefer #1 battered women's shelter, Child crisis center always needs items as they are quickly taken 2safety. 3rd is disabled military vets.
