Ah, the memories! From duck and cover drills to sugary cereals and banana seat bikes, this video really takes us on a journey back to the 1950s. Who else remembers the joy of Saturday morning cartoons and playing outside until the streetlights came on?

I was born in 1956. We had a large (about 3 1/2 acres property and we had horses) so on the weekends, when my mom needed something in the way of groceries, I would saddle-up and ride a horse to town to get her what she needed. Small town, less than 800 people.

I feel like a lot of kids/teens in the 50s quit school to get jobs to support their families or gain independents.

@DaddyOfTheSugarVariety Not intentionally. I started babysitting shortly after my mom decided we no longer needed the supposed late or not in full child support. Then she took every cent so I wouldn't "lose or get it stolen" and conveniently never had it when I wanted to spend it on something 🙄🙄😡😡

I liked Wheaties and Grape Nuts with no sugar, but snacked on Sugar Corn Pops. I never lived anywhere with a candy store or soda fountain.

We only had cold cereal and milk for breakfast. Never oatmeal, eggs or other food. First time I went to camp we were at the mess hall for breakfast. They served oatmeal and eggs. My friends didn’t want their oatmeal. I had 4 bowls and I was so happy! I was in grade school in the 60’s. We had fall out shelters but never no drills. We didn’t have tornado drills either. Only fire drills. Going to the store for penny candy. I miss those days! Just saw the ice cream truck yesterday.

I don't think this person has their history down right.People didn't start eating sugary cereals until The 70's.If you're gonna make an nostalgic video do you research

Not true. There were sugary cereals in the 50s, such as frosted flakes and alpha bits, because they knew that sugar converted into energy for children. Children were much more active back then and diet was vastly different than it is now. It was much more well-rounded

Captain Crunch didn't show up until 1963. Saturday morning cartoons were old movie house reels written for adults until the 60s. Matinees weren't in the morning, they were shown in the early afternoon. Whoa - all of a sudden we're in England, why? The narration definitely is USA centric. Whoever cobbled this mini documentary together is lazy

Although not a boomer, born in '68 and therefore a 70's kid, most of these things only depress me because my mom wasn't "fun". We didn't "need" ice cream truck visits, etc. 🙄🙄 Going around to meet local DJs and get a station sticker for the car was kinda cool tho.

What a load of crap. TV? A TV cost almost $700 and my dad made $38 a week. No one I knew had a TV. Everyone had a big floor model radio in their living rooms. School cafeteria. Where? I lived in Chicago. No school in our area had a cafeteria. Breakfast was eggs, toast and milk. No cereal. Bomb drills? Where? Never heard of them. Maybe in the 60's. Bikes with banana seats? Not in the 50's. Not in Chicago. I was a high school sophomore in 1950 and never heard of this stuff. Your historian needs a reality check. Go talk to people that lived in this era.

I enjoyed this video and though some of the criticisms on here are unfounded, I do agree that you've put in things that didn't start until the 60s and 70s. Since it's a video about the 50s, perhaps just stick to that decade or specify that you are going into the 60s and 70s as well. I'd also just stick to photos and clips from that time period. Just some suggestions

The park my brother and I and then my sons basically grew up in went from long metal slide coming out of a 4 story high ramp attached to an even higher rocket ship to this seriously downsized plastic remodeled pu**y version in '06 or so. 😭😭
