The So-Flat line has been like a DREAM for painting tabletop miniatures. I've never seen another artistic paint line that was such a perfect fit. The beautiful colors, true "flat" finish, and quality are amazing. I wish someone at Golden would do a "paint mix" recipes video for Miniatures. or maybe one of the countless Miniature artists out there using So Flat paints. it could be another first in the miniature world. a REAL recipe. 1 part X, 2 parts Y , 1 part Z. most videos just show "put some of this on the pallet, then a a bit of this, and a smidge of this, ect....

Golden and Kimera Kolors' pure pigment paints are transformative for miniature painters. We can replace hundreds of paints with dozens. It's more economical, and higher quality paints, and potentially cheaper. Yet neither KK nor Golden have ever marketed this right to miniature painters, which is sad. In the meantime, it feels so nice knowing of KK and Golden SoFlat paint ranges.

Can we mix so flat with Golden's open? I'm looking for some colors that cover darker areas of open acrylics but I'm not sure I want the complete flat look. I want some solid areas of open colors, some areas maybe half open and half so flat mixed together, and then also in the same painting, some flat areas. So do you think mixing them together would work to cover maybe better than plain open colors but still give some what of open look?

So flat is compatible with every medium extender and retarder that Golden makes, you can also mix it with other paints like the high flow line for a more fluid range with less gloss and more even coverage.

Great question. OPEN colors are inherently transparent due to the formulation, the retarder levels being so high. You could add SoFlat paints with OPEN paints to create a more solid matte surface. Alternatively, you could start with SoFlat, and add some OPEN Medium to give you some painting time but have a higher level of pigment and leveling from the OPEN. Regardless, the paints are blendable, but you will be the best to judge which direction is best for your needs. Send us a note at [e-mail] if you'd like to discuss this further.

I remember noticing that the very first set of colors was lacking in the violet color space (red violet through to blue violet) since those pigments tend to be transparent. It's exciting to see how you resolved this since then!

Folks like Ninjon, Vince Venturella, Dana Howl have all released popular videos talking about their successes with SoFlat (or the similar product by the Distinguished Competition). Heck something like three major paint lines in the hobby space now advertise themselves as being single pigment paints with professional aspirations.

Can you apply this paint to metal and glass? Is it suitable for decorative objects that will be kept outdoors?

Hello Oriole, you may not get adequate adhesion to metal or glass with SoFlat unless you prepare the surface with something like GAC200 (more about that: justpaint.org/painting-on-glass-with-gac-200/) - as far as outdoor use, generally matte products are not ideal for outdoor use as the matting solids increase the opportunity for dust and dirt to grab onto the paint and for moisture and other contaminants to get into the paint. If you're wanting a matte color finish for outdoors, it is probably best to find protective coatings that are matte and made for exterior use over color. Is SoFlat similar to Flashe paint? I believe Flashe is a vinyl acrylic of some type. Just curious if SoFlat is a vinyl type paint too? So far, I'm really enjoying the product range and will def be adding the Quin Magenta and Cobalt Blue to my collection.

Hello Stephanie - you are correct, Flashe is a vinyl paint (PVA, polyvinyl acetate) which is essentially using wood-glue as a binder. SoFlat uses 100% acrylic polymer emulsion as its binder - very similar to our Fluid and Heavy Body paints.

SoFlat is the best artist acrylic paint I’ve ever used, and I’ve tried a number of different brands and formulations. So I’m very happy to see the new colours (chromium oxide green cough cough). But I do not love the jars. Is there any chance of moving to a nozzle lid system or are there any options for nozzle lids that would fit the jars?

It's in jars because generally SoFlat _tends_ to be used by artists covering a large area - who will almost certainly be working with a commensurately larger brush. You can, of course easily transfer the paint to a nozzle bottle which can be bought very cheaply at art suppliers. The shape of the tub doesn't lend itself to a squeeze top and the tub itself isn't really designed to be regularly squeezed so you'd be much better off getting your own set of squeeze bottles - which can be very handy I find if you also want to premix paint with mediums, then it's always on hand.

@@221b-Maker-Street Well that makes an annoying amount of sense. I have to say though that the large area painting makes more sense for the larger jar sizes. I don't think you'd get far with the 59ml jar, which really makes more sense to be in a different kind of bottle. I should just get some squeeze bottles, I guess, but I hate the amount of wastage that inevitably comes with decanting paint.

@@nicholascaldwell6079 I hear you... You won't necessarily waste much at all though, if you avail yourself of a dinky silicone spatula (the kitchen sort for jars of jam etc). They're extremely effective, and I bet you'll barely leave a scrap behind. And even if you do, you could always rinse it round with a little water or watery medium. Yes, I wonder if the jar versus bottle thing is also from a purely practical pov, for retailers and customers to quickly differentiate between the different products on the shelves...? 🤔

@@221b-Maker-Street good point about differentiation - Golden's trade dress is very very consistent which actually must be a bit of a pain at retail, haha. And I've found a spatula shaped like a platypus on Etsy so I guess I will sate my disappointment with retail therapy. Thank you for talking me off the edge.

I'm curious, what would these colors look like under a Satin and Gloss Varnish...how much they would effect those Varnishes Glossiness. I'm assuming the vibrancy would increase to something like the Fluid colors vibrancy.

Thanks for your question. Any layer of medium, topcoat or varnish is going to visually change the underlying paints. When a gloss or satin product is used over a matte paint, most colors will deepen and have an increased saturation. With SoFlat, surface absorbency needs to be factored in. The easiest approach would be to apply the Isolation Coat, and then the desired sheen. The Isolation Coat when dry will be a glossy finish, especially after 2 layers. You can use this to assess whether they want to keep the high gloss finish or switch to a lower sheen in the varnish. With any of these applications, it is imperative to do testing to avoid permanently altering the artwork.
