OMG YEEEES - The 'What is your onboarding process like' is sooo important! I work in academia where the idea of onboarding kind of starts and stops at making sure you wont accidentally kill yourself in the lab, which means that new employees often spend a lot of time just trying to figure out where things are, how to get a compute - you know, the BASICS. Going forward I'm never skipping this question ever - it tells you so much about how structured, supportive, and just involved management is in helping you get on your feet and tips you off if they might be controlling or overbearing.

Treating an interview like any day on the job is excellent advice, and really was a turning point for improving my interview skills. I recently had a 7 hour round of round-robin interviews (IT) and they had asked me if it was rough. I just said (and honestly meant) that’s just what a great day at work would be; talking with talented people and solving challenging problems together. If you don’t enjoy talking to these people during the interview process, then I guarantee you aren’t going to enjoy working with them on the job

I had a phone interview yesterday scheduled for 12pm. I was going to spend the 10am hour finding questions for the interview, looking over the website and everything. But because of the time difference I got the call at 10am! I think it went well but I didn't have any questions planned. I freaked! And asked "so...when can I start? 🤡🤡🤡" I'm laughing about it now but definitely have your questions prepared WELL before the interview.

Erin, I haven't watched all your videos yet, but you have great content! In speaking of doing your research, also understand benefits from what a company is obligated to offer by size, and what they they do offer BEFORE you accept (as you always encourage). I work at a company less than 20 people including the owners. Despite ALWAYS being transparent about the benefits package, I hear new employees complain of not being covered by FMLA. It's not required because of our size. I've also heard complaints of not receiving some employer paid benefits like life insurance and short term disability, etc. All of these things absolutely discussed before hiring, also in our not so big employee benefits guide! So, know what an employer does and does not have to offer if you think it will make a difference in your choice of job acceptance.

I would like to see you discuss the culture questions and the insights you gain from those conversations. As I’ve grown professionally, I’ve found that I was a bull in china shop. But also, I’ve learned that I hadn’t been properly mentored; which did not help me grow and lead to me developing an improper idea for my role. Also, how can I prepare myself to playing the professional game? I want to be successful but I don’t want to be fake about how I approach my work but I’ve that has lead to me being taken advantage of.

What if the company says they will let me know on this day in a week about the next steps, but they do not reply to my follow up email after that day? Companies that ghost people who are looking for jobs are horrible and heartless.
@kamiw58642 ай бұрын
That literally just happened to me and I've never had a company do that before, it feels pretty bad. I thought the interview went well and I was pretty excited about that position. Being "ghosted" like that though made me realize that it wouldn't have been a great place to be. It's such a low level practice.

Hi Erin! Not sure if you're answering every message. My question to you is, how should I go about landing a job while having a small child ? I recently had a job interview and it went great but later they told me they chose someone else, after hearing their explanation it was clear the main difference was that they thought it would be hard for me to commute with a baby. ( they offered day care for employees on the campus).

The video is very informative! Why would you ask, "May I send you a thank you note?" If you already have their email address, which is often the case, you should just send the thank you note without asking. Asking whether you could send a thank you note feels unnecessary.

Erin, your stuff is fantastic. But much of it is geared towards a person applying for a job at a place they have never worked before. I have worked in the same state agency for 33 years. I'm about to interview for a position in my own unit, a position that I have worked and trained replacements for for three decades, whenever there was a vacancy. I already know the answers to all the questions in this video. What would you recommend I ask at the end of the interview, aside for the last two questions?

Unfortunately, due to personal reasons that I am unable to divulge, I feel compelled to leave. It is a tough decision because I genuinely love the work and the people here. However, my past experiences with job changes have been extremely unlucky, and I worry about failing probation periods becoming unemployed as I have been unemployed which is soul destroying and I do struggle with interviews in a new role. Is it a red flag if they don't ask you if you have any questions?
@janessah8684Ай бұрын
I wouldn't say "red flag"; maybe their style is different or they forgot. Try and gain some control over the conversation and add something like "I have a couple of questions, if you don't mind", or interject with a question or 2 when there is time and it's appropriate towards the end. It shows you are interested and maybe the other person was busy and not thinking to ask you or something, you never know but make sure you say everything to not leave with any regrets. If they didn't like that you asked a question, that's probably not a great place to work.
