Many comments here on the dog. Duke is a working dog. He is gathering and herding by instinct, and that is what he is supposed to do. A Border Collie would rather work than eat, or be petted. His behavior is perfect for what he is bred to do. I hope he has a job. :-)

I had chickens back in WA they roamed free everywhere, I not only never had problems with parasite or illness of any kinds but I did not need to feed them except in winter when there was lots of snow. I would give them a little scratch or food ever now and then they rarely ate it. My dogs guarded the chickens. They were compensated with fresh eggs. I should add, I also never gave them any types of medications, no dewormer or anything

I'm a new chicken mom with 3, year-old laying hens. We're an hour north of Houston and had a huge thunder and lightening storm last night. This morning I found an egg in the chicken run (they always lay in the brooder box), and it had a super thick shell that resembled rubber with a watery light yellow fluid inside. Have you seen this with stressed chickens? Thank you, and I love your videos and that you're my neighbor.
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience Жыл бұрын
I have seen those type of eggs before but was not able to connect it with any stress situations. We had those same nasty storms and my chickens laid perfect eggs today.
@maryannblair9784
@maryannblair9784 10 ай бұрын
We’ve had rubber eggs laid. When you touch they usually pop open and seem normal inside. Also used to get very large eggs from one brown hen and once it was the size of a turkey egg. Never figured it out. Currently, five hens, with four regularly laying in summertime are not producing. We get one a day if lucky. Probably due to season with less sunlight and molting, and perhaps not enough protein in diet. The eggs lately have yolks that break immediately after cracking open. These hens are only two years old.

He is always plotting...lol. If the hen is just sneezing and has no other symptoms, she should get over it. She just needs a good diet and fresh air. If you see that she is lethargic, swelling of her combs and around eyes, has diarrhea, or is walking funny, that could be something more serious.

To add to your all as I have had chickens for 60 years. I have an elderly chicken about 9 years of age. Depending on your finances and how far you wish to go. She was not feeling well. Crabby and and not moving much. I went in to my Avisru Vet. With x-rays and what I coined as chicken med exM a b and b. Meaning beak to butt exam. We found due to her age she had arthritis. She now gets meds of arthritis meds, pain pills and gabba Penton. My chicken is an English Fighter but she is mixed so she is tiny and named vanilla. I am adding to this to your awesome site as no one wants to spend money in the amount I have. She will still be around but not alone younger. There are no cardiac chicken Dr's. Vanilla has some small cardiac. I give her one bilberry pill in 1 gallon of milk. Depending where u are add actbmvatez char coal to water ad wrll. We have so many toxins in our environment it will help add some aloe and garlic and uour birds will be safer or any of my suggestions. Vanilkas comb turns purple but use of this given to ky flock makes them healthy along with your ideS add garlic as well and tiny apple cidar vinegar. My chickens are service chickens and it is imperative they remain well as I am chemically allergic and go into coma states as we have high pollution in Reno most days and smoke. Smike can kill birds. U can not get federal chicken rescue permits but you can have a Dr give a letter. My birds if they can not breath run to slider door and come in sit next to air purifiers and do well. They have cages for setting and sleep. Learn to adapt as we do not know what this crazily future brings In areas that may become dangerous to leave them out like mine is becoming in Reno they become in birds and are relaxed and hapoy...but would rather he.out. They as well lovevto watch game of thrones video the queen and her dragon. Funny.. Hope this helps..please be safe make sure birds are locked up as chicken theft will be massive soon. My flock is going through something and trying to narrow it down I think they have something respiratory. First it started with are duck sneezing and coughing 3 days later our bantam rooster was crowing and it sounded weird he has snot and sneezing. It keeps spreading to our other chickens I’ve treated with Vet Rx and gave them electrolytes they get cleaned daily.
@prettybirdthepetgoosefrien8155
@prettybirdthepetgoosefrien8155 Жыл бұрын
Id ALSO add that chickens are PRAY ANIMALS and any expert and vet will admit that finding/diagnosing any bird, in time, is exceptionally hard! They hide their illnesses, so once you see an indicator, it's usually important to immediately try to solve the mystery/ treat the issue! When they show illness, it's usually already an advanced issue and they are at risk. Vets have admitted that physical exams may show NOTHING WRONG with a bird, but the bird may pass suddenly that same evening /within 24hrs as they will hide their illness/injury for as long as they possibly can! 😢

I appreciate you showing pics of chickens with the symptom your describing because no one else does. I’ve watched many many videos some several times and so far very few show examples. One question, on the crop. Don’t the girls eat a lot before they go to roost so their crop will be full anyway? How does a full crop feel different than an impacted or sour crop?
@CountryLivingExperience

You're welcome. They usually don't eat a lot before going to roost. If you are going to give scratch grains do it in the early part of the day. A normal crop will feel soft and pliable vs. hard and enlarged.

I had 2 hens die over the winter. Each one started with a limp, which eventually led to lethargy and even using a wing to prop themselves up when trying to walk. Each time I inspected their feet and didn't see bumblefoot. I tried putting one in an epsom salt bath on 2 occasions but that didn't help. The only thing I did notice was one time the rooster jumped from a roosting bar and landed on one of the girls and that definitely did not help the situation. Once I saw that 2 hens died and couldn't figure out the reason I got rid of the rooster just in case. We have a small flock and it would be nice to keep a roo' around for reproduction and protection but it'll probably be awhile before we get another one. I just wish I knew why they both started limping in the first place.

I have 6 Golden Comets. I will admit to spoiling them but I am out with them multiple times a day for at least 15-30 minutes at a time. I have heard one of the hens struggling in the nest box and thought maybe it was just a large egg. As all of my chickens are the same type and same age, I will admit that I cannot readily tell them apart. 3 are larger and 3 are smaller. I would venture that the larger hens are 5 1/2-6 pounds and the smaller one are 4 1/2 to 5 pounds. I did notice that one seemed to have poop matted on her butt on Friday morning. I filled a bucket with warm water and decided that it wouldn't hurt any of them to take a quick "bird bath". I dipped them in up to their backs while holding them down across the top of the back. None were thrilled to go in but once there, they seemed to enjoy it, especially since when I took them out, I wrapped them in a towel to fry off and let them peck a while in the flock block. They all responded positively and it got their feet and undercarriage cleaned off. On Saturday, I noticed that one of the girls was covered in poop on her back side and strongly suspected that it was the same one as on Friday. I took her and put her in the bucket of warm water for about 20 minutes gently rubbing her back side trying to get it clean. Dried her off and held her for a while longer while wrapped up and, when seemed to get antsy, I put her back in the run and she seemed to be fine. Sunday was fine but only 5 eggs (not concerning). This morning, I got 5 eggs by 9 o'clock. I cleaned the coop tray as I do every morning and noticed that one of the hens had gone into the nest box. I didn't see her go in and it is dark. I didn't want to disturb her so I didn't try to look and see if it might have been the same one. Finished cleaning the tray and raked out the run and came inside for a cup of coffee. Went back out about 11 and gave the girls a treat and checked the box on the way back to the house. I saw an egg that I thought had been pecked. It was covered in really thick albumen all the way around. The shell wasn't visably broken so I decided to wash it and see. It took a little gently rubbing to get the albumen off and, to my surprise, I found an intact egg. Normally, the chicken eggs weigh between 1.9 and 2.4 ounces. This one weighed 2.1 ounces so it is my belief that maybe it is a regular egg. Is it possible that she tried but was unsuccessful at laying the egg and instead of a new egg having a shell develop, that the egg instead attached itself to the first egg? Unlike you, this is my first real foray into raising chickens (my grandparents had chickens and I used to feed them and gather the eggs from the hen house but that was well over 60 years ago). Any thoughts?

I honestly don't know. I have never heard of anything like that. I am certainly no expert on chickens. If she is not acting sick, I would say there is no problem. Just keep an eye on her. Try to change the diet a bit if she keeps having pasty butt.

We have a hen that was bound up and became prolapsed. Soaked in warm water ang got the egg out. Worked her stuff back inside her. We’re not going to go to the vet…. It’s a chicken. Worried about infection now. Fortunately she is a breed that lays about every other day. Hopefully she can recover before the next egg.😢

Thank you for this Video. Very informative. I deal with mites a lot. Have to keep dusting my chickens behind. I do it in the evening before they go inside, since the mites are most active at night time. I dust everything, the nesting boxes, the floor of their coop and the outside feeding areas. I also use diatomaceous earth in the area they dust bathe in. It all requires work, but a happy chicken will lay a happy egg 🥚😂

I have one hen with just a few missing feathers randomly over her body. Her comb is pale on top (like frostbite looks, but it wasn't like that in the winter.) Her appetite is great and she runs around with the others like normal. She is laying too, and I haven't noticed anyone picking on her. I've not noticed her crop enlarged, but now I will look more closely. One of our dogs got into their run a month or more ago and grabbed a few birds to play with before I got him out, so there is a possibility that she got stressed from that, but it hasn't happened again since then, although they can see the dogs' run from theirs so they see him daily. They free range in a large fenced area and get organic feed and kitchen scraps plus black soldier fly larva treats. They have several dirt bath areas they've made for themselves. Our basement sump pump outflow is in their area, and they love to play in the mud in warmer weather, and have fresh unfrozen groundwater there year round, as well as a waterer in their coop. I'm watching her in case she starts looking any worse, but I'm thinking maybe I should give her some anti-parasitic herbs or apple cider vinegar or black walnut hulls or something just in case she has some kind of parasite. My other girls are fine.

If it is just a few missing feathers and everything else is fine, I would not worry about it. She may be preening or is getting slightly pecked on and you just aren't getting the opportunity to see it happen.

I’ve had my chickens for 2 years. I can’t let them free range but they have a somewhat decent size place to roam. I lost one the other week and actually didn’t know she had worms until it was too late. I am presently treating the rest of them with pharmaceutical ivermectin. Can you please link your dewormer and tie dosage? All of the ones I see at the feed store are for horses and goats. Also can you link the probiotics you use. Thank you.

Hi I have two small baby chicks and they were ok but one of them started shaking and bouncing on his legs and today he could not tame up. I still got them under lamp they are only 3 week and 3 day old. I not using food from chicken food store. I grind corn and wheat to very fine pieces added boiled egg and cottage cheese for calcium and protein. They loved it I also given them grind hazelnut only. Small portion. This one poly jumped into water and I dried her with a hair dryer gently to not overheat her. Not sure what is the problem I given them slo b vitamin an glucose the weak got a little bit better but still could not walk. I given him the glucose in lukewarm water and that also contain b vitamin riboflavin. I noticed he is breathing hardly Not sure if menthol oil is not to strong for them because they are still babies

First time chicken owner here. One of my chicks had impacted crop. Gave her warm water and oil, massages, and extra grit. She still struggled. Switched food and started getting her out to forage and she made a full recovery! I didn't know any better about the medicated corn+soy feed when I got them... Their feathers got very shiny after adding sprouted flax, chia, and BSF larvae. 😊
