Smart Home Solver Thank you for the great ideas! I want to replace most of the lights in my home with smart lighting. I'm just not sure if I should keep all of my switches on all the time if I'm using routines and voice activation. Would it do any damage to leave all my switches on, and is there any benefit to using both smart switches and smart lights together?

I see I am quite late to the party and the SwitchBot curtain is now available from their site instead of the Indigogo campaign. But I had to leave a comment to say, THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING THIS. I have an elderly parent with limited mobility who uses a long stick to move the curtains over the sliding door back and forth and it takes a lot of effort and can cause dizziness. This is a brilliant solution since she’s already familiar using Alexa for controlling the lights and using reminders. This is a game changer. I'm a lighting/LED nerd and have had my entire home wired with RGBW bulbs+strips that I could control from both the LAN and WAN for many years. I remember in 2013 I felt like I was living in the future one time as I was hacking my light bulbs via UDP in an attempt to reverse engineer the undocumented protocol enough to create my own bash CLI for my 40 bulb 2.4ghz mesh instead of relying on the crappy hardware that came with/from the anonymous and now non-existent manufacturer. Heh. Fun Times. It was the wild west of IoT. Anyway, I haven't paid attention to smart home things for a long time and the state of the art has really come a long way. I feel like a newb again, which is kinda fun. That being said, I want to say I very much appreciate your videos with their no-nonsense yet informative approach. There's a lot of conflicting opinions out there, but many which seem reputable on the surface boil down to ease-of-setup rather than objective functionality. It's annoying to watch a 20 minute review of hubs ecosystems only to find out the depth of their final opinion is no deeper than how easy it change the lightbulb colors. :/ Inefficiencies are annoying so I haven't actually invested in a hub yet, because I want the right one (or combination) from the start. I'm leaning towards smarthtings v2, but Home Assistant looks more DIY, which I'm attracted to, but also don't want to spend 10 hours making every task work. Ideally I'd like something easy to work with on the user level, but also something that also allows you to really dig into some code if you so choose. Do you have a video about hub ecosystem interoperability? Like which systems play well together, and which combos don't? I imagine it's a bit of a mine-field on the protocol level. What are the non-obvious technical pitfalls? That sorta thing? Thanks again for your efforts! :)

You could probably do that with the SmartThings multipurpose sensor since it has a temperature sensor built in. Mount it just to the side of the window (out of direct heat/sunlight) where it will be affected by the temp change first. Or use 2, and decide how much difference you want between them before the curtains are changed.

The main issue here is that a virtual switch won’t know if your wyze plug is turned off or on at the begging of the automation. If you always have the lights on in the back then you could just make sure they stay on.

How do you slowly raise the brightness of your LIFX bulb over 30 minutes. I CAN’T figure this out.
@jodidas5 жыл бұрын
I love the fade in lights before sunset. I cannot find a way to do this via smart things. Are you using some other software to accomplish this?
@claudiaadams86505 жыл бұрын
Lifx lights have an app that has day/dusk settings. Can't do color with it, but you can set it up pretty easily to turn on before sunset. Or you can use IFTTT to have the lights start turning on at a set time and a set color. I personally use this option and just set a generic time rather than customizing to actual sunset (it's usually around the same time for about 6 months).

ST has a SnartApp called "Gentle Wake Up" that will do this for you

I want to replace my dumb switches with smart switches throughout my house. But I also wanted some smart bulbs for rgbw capability. Is there any switches that are smart bulb safe that you would recommend? Or maybe just smart bulbs that if powered off by switch wont start blinking or have to reconfigure them? I could care less if they go back to white and dont remember last color. Just dont wanna reconfigure bulbs constantly. Big fan of your videos so if you could give me some insight that would be much appreciated.

My LED lightbulb died today so I was thinking about getting an RGB one. Somehow Google managed go predict that you're the right person for me today even though I didn't even search for an RGB lightbulb yet.

I do have the Brilliant Switch, Phlips Wiz connected to them but having a hard time trying to setup scenes like you are showing. Also I have the Philips Hue and two bulbs attached to it -does not seem like they are talking with Brilliant - (completely different rooms - Master Bedroom is Brilliant, Philips Hue in Family room by TV) and ring door bell - trying to hook all this up to some smart connection with Alexa - and does not seem like it is connection. So if you are able to also post videos on how to program different scenes and stuff that would be great, I am enjoying what you are sharing here - Hope you will be able to post info on how to create these scenes you are talking about here. Thanks, Laxmi

Thanks for the suggestion. I could see that being helpful and I'll see what I can do.

I watched several of your videos in a row, but I think it was in this one that you said Alexa routines could be triggered by a smart home device. Do you have a video that covers how to do that?
@SmartHomeSolver4 жыл бұрын
You'll want to set that up in the routines. If you click on "When this happens" then click "smart home," you can choose a device to trigger your routine. I talk about it a little bit in this article and video: smarthomesolver.com/reviews/alexa-routine-ideas/ This article by Amazon might also be helpful: www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=202200080

Hey there! Nice video! What is the reason of buying those covers for buttons instead of hard wiring the cables in the switch?

Watched some of your family friendly videos, good stuff keep it up! - commenting because this is the one that finally made me subscribe. many actual tips that might be useful for the common (light) smart home user. ATTENTION - LED's are not cheesy... i have now dabbled in a few different areas of my home and people have been wowed as well as myself!.. can it be gimmicky at times? yes, but operator error haha enjoy them and for the price - few (removable) purchases make such an impact! For the price of a sofa or nice coffee table.. you could do so much with LED's to elevate your homes appearance and your comfort level. Have fun doing these as well,

Thanks so much for watching and subscribing! I agree with you about the impact of LEDs and how they can change the look and feel of a room.
