There is also a fourth type of watercolor paper that is 100% cotton artist grade. Its called "Soft Pressed. Most companies do not make soft pressed but Fabriano Artistico Co still makes it. Jerry's Artarama carries it. I had some once and an artist friend of mine loves using it. PS, Botanical Illustration water-colorist will do a lot of dry brushing only they use the very tip of their brush slightly splayed out using feather like sweeps. Some do the whole painting in dry brush application. Awesome to work this way. Thank you for sharing. Your work just keeps getting more awesome.
@mariamorjane5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Renee! Thank you for sharing. I did hear about "soft press" it's like between Hot Pressed and Cold Pressed but it never appealed to me for some reason to try it.. 🌸
@renmuffett5 жыл бұрын
@@mariamorjane I tried it once several years ago and its actually a bit spongy. I guess that's why they call it soft. The paper is not hard surfaced like hot or cold pressed. Color lifts very easily on it so hardly and scrubbing needed. But if you have to scrub, it wouldn't take it very well. You cannot get it in blocks and they don't make it in the tablet pads anymore so I don't buy it.

great summary of some basic watercolor techniques..........when I first started with this medium, and still at times, it can leave so many artifacts, like blooms, etc. and become very frustrating............having a basic knowledge of why these things happen and what to do and not to do helps so much..............I need to practice so much more to hopefully improve my painting...........watching the videos and classes is great, and then you have to do it yourself, to get the feel of things I think.............love your videos!

I've recently started to paint in watercolor again(I'd done it as a child, but not as an adult) and I've been struggling with blooms and hard edges where I don't want them. It looks like the key to avoiding them is working in layers and wetting my paper down before each layer, or working quickly enough so the paint doesn't dry on me before I have time to finish what I'm doing.
@mariamorjane5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sara, you got this! 😃

Cellulose paper also can also contribute to these issues because the water n pigment sits on the surface and causes pooling 100% cotton this happens a lot less. Try experimenting with your paper a lot times that’s the issue - the quality of paper is often more important than the quality of paint

This was an awesome tutorial! Thank you. I have seen many of your tutorials. I see Neutral Tint often. Is that like Gouache? I use mostly Windsor and Newton paints. Would I be able to find "neural tint" with that brand? You used it in your "Painting a Forest in Watercolor". I don't exactly understand why and what it does. And another question: Do you hate blooms? Seems pretty at times! Again. I am very grateful for your tutorials.
@mariamorjane5 жыл бұрын
Hi Connie, thank you so much 🤗Neutral Tint is just another shade of great, another watercolor, if you don't have it you can just use Payne's Gray by WN for example, although most companies do have this watercolor pigment as well. I love blooms ☺️🌹It just depends on what I am painting. Blooms are beautiful.

Best tutorial I have ever watched. Very informative. Exactly what I am looking for as a beginner. However, does the BRAND of watercolor you use matters? Does it make a difference esp on wet on wet technique? Or it’s just about paint:water ratio to have that great water flow? Appreciate a response. Thank you.
@mariamorjane4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nanette, thank you☺️🌹Paints do matter but it depends what techniques you will be using, if a lot of wet on wet then Holbein are great because they are easier to control (Holbein doesn't add oxgall, brands that do use it make their paints spread much faster). The ratio is also important ☺️🌹
