I have never even seen the splatterhouse arcade cabinet. I thought it was a tg16 original for years because that was the original i first saw. And to this day i havent actually seen the original arcade standup. I know it exists but it was never in any of the arcades i went to. They had all the neogeo cabinets with the blood turned off so it looked like the enemies were vomiting milk. And mortal kombat was what everyone thought was the most gorey. But it was actually pretty tame compared to other games that never got the attention it had. Tecmo knight was far more brutal than MK and so was splatterhouse. But those werent in every arcade. The only place i ever saw tecmo knight was in a flea market arcade that had a bunch of stuff i never heard of. Tecmo knight was like a brutal version of golden axe. I did play that a lot. I owned splatterhouse on tg16. And emulated the arcade version after i learned it existed. So i have played it. But i have never physically seen a splatterhouse arcade stand up. I would have clogged it with coins and wore the buttons off it if i had.

What about time killers? Wasnt a very good looking or good playing game. But it was the first one that i saw where you could cut off the other players limbs and nerf their attacks down to only kicking. And it was annoying as hell cause it was the first game where you could just one shot someone with a decapitation and completely ignore their life bar. That was how the game won in later levels. You would have the enemy on the ropes and he would instant kill you with a lucky head chop every time. But you doing it and one shotting the enemy with a decapitation was like finding a golden unicorn. It never happened. But the game would do it to you all the time.
@NekoHazrd2 жыл бұрын

I noticed a pattern. Dismemberment usually equals blood. Blood has to spray like a Quentin Tarantino movie. The exceptions are _Altered Beast_ (1:41) and Red Earth (6:43). I believe this is a wise and creative choice. Dismemberment is eye catching and grabs players attention. Putting a ton of blood can be a bit distracting and alienate certain audiences.

With Haohmaru now in Soul Calibur 6, It made the game way more gory. Since Soul Calibur 4 and the addition of Critical Finishes, for the first time in the series, it is strongly suggested that now characters can die during combats, as many character's Critical Finishes will show your opponent dead on the ground (no breathing animation and motionless). Yoshimitsu basically cut his opponents head off without actually cutting off the head or Algol crushing his opponent with his throne, then again without having blood, organs and body parts splattered everywhere. It never was at the level of mortal kombat but with the addition of Haohmaru in Soul Calibur 6, for the first time in the series it actually show blood ( and quite lot of it). What make it more gut wrenching is when you use Hoahmaru's Rage Explosion Critital Edge on Talim, a sweet and purehearted 15 year old girl (She could be the equivalent of Nakoruru or Rimururu). Hoahmaru will slice her open, with her blood spewing and raining down everywhere, then she fall dead on the ground, motionless, with the camera lingering on her dead body in the background.

Most of the time enemies just fall over when you beat them but if you hit them with certain attacks or weapons they can be cut in half, or outright explode into pieces, usually just leaving their legs. Weaponlord was a fairly cult console game from the mid 90s that looked gorgeous (2000AD artist Simon Bisley did the graphics) and let you chain special attacks at the end of a fight, doing nasty things to the enemy's body. For example, you could combo the last hit into a whirling waist slash and send their guts flying, chain into an upward sweep that took their head off, blast the floor to explode their torso then sweep again to catch the falling head and shatter the skull apart. ⁰00

one thing that always struck me as weird is that japan has no problem with games focusing on assault (r*pelay) and games in the eroge genre (even involving underage girls) are still sold and made there, but games like mortal kombat have always faced challenges there. mortal kombat, while gory, is so not replicable. the fatalities are so obviously impossible and ed boon (the creator) himself says they try to make them that way in order to make actual emulation of them impossible, but games like r*pelay are kinda replicable, in the sense that there aren’t people with wings, magic, or martial arts skills that defy physics and anatomy, it’s just a guy doing terrible things. i know it comes down to values and all that, but in a law sense it never made sense to me. the major reason why things are banned is because they are considered “obscene” and/or “dangerous to kids” and how does mortal kombat fit that bill but eroge games, especially games involving children, don’t fit the bill.
