Only a few of these are actual failed attempts to clone Mortal Kombat. Many of these games were misunderstood in their own right. Time Killers was the first to do what it did with in-battle dismemberment. It was also a really dope game. Survival Arts, while it was certainly inspired by MK, was its own game entirely, a cult classic at that. Eternal Champions was one of my most pleasant childhood memories, and the first game was tuned to competitive balance. The sequel didn't give a shit about that and just added more fatalities, a broken combo system, playable animals... Still fun though.

Mortal Kombat was the beginning and fame of intense violence in fighting games. So it is actually surprising there were much more ripoffs that tried to mimick the game's most popular factor, which actually was the reason most of th were forgotten so quickly. Samurai Showdown, Red Earth and Eternal Champions proved that ther is room to innovate or offer some good content, while the rest simply fails and focuses mostly on intense gore. Mortal Komabt was awesome not only for it's prerenderized graphics and violence, also it's eerie ans fitting scemario and well written and developed characters and story that stays interesting even to this day. And my god to think that Naughty Dog actually did a MK clone before breaking the sales with Crash.

A couple of corrections: Primal Rage, while encouraged by MK's success, was not inspired by it. The game was a massive gamble and had a costly production. All characters were filmed from wire framed, covered miniatures. The filmed movement was then rendered. It created fluid movement. Weaponlord was Namco trying to create a fighter for home. It didn't land right but they used the attack formula again, for Soul Calibur. Tattoo Assassins was never released. It was advertised heavily but never made it past a few soak test alphas. It was a good example of what happens when a game designer tries to overreach. Major financial loss.

Blood storm was Timekillers 2, they just didn’t name it that way. Thrill Kill wasn’t even finished before they pulled the plug on it. I’m sure you can find a somewhat playable rom out there but years and years ago, it was difficult to find.

Virtua Fighter has these all beat… probably the most brutal game ever

Happy 30th anniversary go all those games that came out in '94. 😆

I want to point out that Time Killers was actually a response to the success of Street Fighter, TK came out roughly at the same time as MK. You could say this is like the case of Fatal Fury being a SF clone when they came out at the same time too.

I don't care what anyone says. Eternal Champions was dope. Bloodstorm looks like spawn comic rejects. Time killers was also dope. Killer instinct, do i need to even say anything? Primal rage is probably R-kellys favorite fighting game.
Regarding Tattoo Assassins, this was actually made by Data East. Namely, their pinball division which is now known as Stern Pinball. As for the game's creation, it all began with an idea by Bob Gale (yep, the same guy who wrote the Back to the Future movies) who would give his screenplays to Joe Kaminkow who was friends with him following the creation of the Back to the Future pinball games (which explains one of the fatalities where the opponent is run over by a DeLorean DMC-12), And one of those screenplays involved tattoos coming to life.

This was a nice trip down memory lane...If I could reclaim the money I pumped into Primal Rage and the Samurai Shodown series I'd be a millionaire! I would've removed Tattoo Assassins and replaced it with Cardinal Syn, though.
Great list.... plus gave me new games to look for like weaponlord for the genesis

Eh...People calling Red Earth and Samurai Showdown "MK clone" in the comments is a bit of an insult to their actual roots imo.
@Kensuke098725 күн бұрын
Red Earth has the prettiest cross section stuff i've seen for a game at its time the anatomy is kinda well-thought out/designed it even has them for non-human beings

And still today mortal kombat is still here today making money and still making more games, out numbered all of these games on this list, and out of all those games time killers was my favorite, since thrills kills wasn’t released

its bad to see only old figthing games that are similar to mortal kombat (i wont count guilty gear because those finisher are just famility friendly or pegi13 at best)

.. some of these shouldn’t even be on here, they were wack when it comes to their version of fatality. Eternal champions will always be peak

All nothing but cheap knock offs from mortal kombat.except some of those.

One of these games, ks notorious for NOT having finishers, yet is in the list.

Eternal champions was a fun game I love that you can't spam some move over and over if you taunt it took away the opponent ability to use special moves

Half of them at least are superior to MK. pfff sorry (not sorry !) mk is a lousy excuse for a fighting game

Ridiculous! I've only heard 4/5 of those games. Rest look like cashgrabs. Ridiculous. No thoughts into making some of those games, they just wanted to sell violence for cash.

So what is the pixilated thing in the Blood Warriors if the rest is just a pile of gore and we show that? It's at 4:07

Outside of weaponlord, eternal champions, primal rage, red earth, killer instinct and samurai showdown, these are basically just mk clones.
