I think the atmosphere of the film is so oppressive in comparison to the other two and the lead protagonist is really strong.

Some underseen/underappreciated faves: -Paperhouse (1988): Wildly creative film about childhood illness and imagination curdled into a nightmare -Wake in Fright (1971): Relentless horror about unhinged masculinity and repression in the Australian Outback -The Hitcher (1986): This has found an audience but it has some genuinely oneiric, pulpy visuals and a dynamite Rutger Hauer performance. -Bad Boy Bubby (1993): Largely for the first third, which is one of the most oppressive first acts in anything I've seen. Drastically changes after but it's very tough to get through and deeply creative. Ends up somewhere kind of beautiful. -The Hidden (1987): More an action creature feature, but it's blistering fun with some astounding car chases and creature effects. Kyle MacLachlan perfectly cast. -Last Year at Marienbad (1961): I know this is fully celebrated, but not often as a horror film. I found it deeply unsettling, like a bad dream that sticks to you for weeks after. -In the Cut (2003): Very underrated effort from Campion that situates you in the female perspective so convincingly that every man onscreen reeks of sexual threat. Fascinating film -The Cook The Thief His Wife and Her Lover (1989): Words can't do this justice. Completely original in its presentation, theatricality and features one of the most vile antagonists ever committed to film. Also darkly funny, and gorgeous to look at. -Angst (1983): As uncompromising as serial killer films get. You never leave his perspective, and every murder is deeply ugly. Sticks to you. -Prom Night 2: Mary Lou's Revenge: Just a wild Nightmare on Elm Street/Carrie riff that delivers creative setpieces again and again. Extremely fun and wears its influences on its sleeves.

I just hate the gatekeeper mentality of telling people what is and isn't "Real Horror", and I detest those "______ is the best horror YOU'VE NEVER SEEN" clickbait videos, so I just wanted to make a fun list that basically says; "Hey, I want to show some love for a bunch of genre movies...and whether you've seen them or not is totally okay".

Climax is very good, its scary and sad at the same time, based on a real story, and having had acid trips that go a bit away from the beautiful and warm into dark and crazy, its a fantastic portrait of very bad drug experience.

Well, putting so many of these on my watchlist. Big yes for Kathleen Turner deserving an Oscar for Serial Mom, every scene and every line delivery is simply iconic (I have NEVER been able to think of the song "Tomorrow" without picturing this movie)... sure we'd have to take the award for Jessica Lange in order to give it to Kathleen, but Lange has 2 Oscars so she can stand to give one up for the cause.

It made me so happy to see Lain on this list! It’s quite the cult classic, but animated stuff like it tends to get overlooked. Not a movie, but my recommended horror watch would be the 2007 Higurashi anime adaptation. It’s hard to describe the series without giving things away, but it’s a potent work about the origins of tradition and religion as they come into contact with a world where science can explain things. As a horror mystery, it has one of the most interesting “solutions” I’ve ever seen and I cannot recommend it enough.

This is such a great video. Volume II showed up in my recommendations, but I thought I'd come back and watch Vol. I first. This is a great selection of films and you speak about them very knowledgably and eloquently. I've seen ten of these and, to some extent, I enjoyed them all - so I'm now intrigued by the ten I haven't seen. This is the first video of yours I've seen, I loved it, I've subscribed, and now I'm going to watch Volume II!

@@inframeout It's hard to say what my favourites are, tbh. I like all the ones I've seen on this list - and I think I've seen eleven of them, not ten. Some I'd completely forgotten about - such as Calibre, American Mary and May - and it's great to be reminded of them. I enjoyed I Saw The Devil a great deal and I've always thought that Splice is an underrated film. I like Climax - and it deserves it's place on this list - but I've always had mixed feelings about Gaspar Noe. Calvaire is a film I liked but didn't love - I think I just wasn't in quite the right mood for it when I saw it, and its unique tone didn't quite hit home for me. I actually preferred the director's following film - Vinyan. It's probably not an entirely successful film, and I don't know what I'd make of it if I watched it again now, but at the time I enjoyed its arty/horror aesthetic - if you haven't seen it, it's like a blend of Heart of Darkness (or Apocalypse Now), Don't Look Now and Gaspar Noe. And of course eXistenZ is great and is probably one of Cronenberg's films that doesn't get enough credit. Of the films I haven't seen, I'm intrigued by several of them - Dream House and Stake Land, for example. I think Snowtown looks a little too harrowing for me at the moment, but it is now on my radar, and if I ever feel up to it I might one day seek it out! Seriously, what a great video, a cut above what I'd normally see on youtube, and I appreciate you talking about these more obscure, lesser known films rather than more obvious choices. (And to answer you original question, now that I've reflected on it for a little while, I'd say that eXistenZ and Calibre are my two favourite films that I've seen from this list.)

I've seen almost all of these, but just wanted to give you extra credit for Dream Home. I have been telling people about that movie for 10 years and no one listens to me. So much new material here! I don't know if my recommendations count as "underground" but still, one of my favourites more contemporary ones is Hagazussa (great soundtrack too), and since you referenced some classic Italian horror in the introduction I'd also recommend Bava's "Lisa and the Devil" (the original version without all the exorcism nonsense) and Bazzone's "Le Orme" aka Footprints on the Moon. Not sure if these count as horror though, maybe just plain weird.

I Saw The Devil made me take a bath in liquid bronze after watching it. A good film but uh, not for me. Existenz, I saw when I was 16 so I doubt I got it. Splice was pretty decent but I could have done without the impregnation at the end. Just don't like seeing that stuff. As for what I would consider an underrated horror flick? I rarely hear people talk about Angel Heart. I love it. Compelling and creepy, then ultimately haunting.

I would like to add “The Wolf House” as one of the most haunting movies I’ve seen. Thank you for adding a Justin Kurzel movie into your list. “Snowtown” is the only film of his I haven’t seen. “Nitram” is one of the best movies of the year, and completely subverts our obsession with true crime. It’s sobering, melancholic, and asks us to reflect on the mundane and ordinary.

@@inframeout I completely agree. Justin Kurzel is an intelligent and bold filmmaker. “The True History of the Kelly Gang” was one of my favorite films of 2021, and weaves in great themes of how legends within history become core to one’s identity, and how colonizing it is tantamount to Empires.

@@inframeout The ending was horrendous! It's the only thing that prevents me from recommending the movie to people. Overall, I found the two leads very unlikable in the beginning, full of hubris and empty of ethics, but the movie does a decent job of showing their psychologies and helps us understand why they are the way they are (still kinda don't like them though).

As far as underrated horror goes, I’ve got to point to some old foreign films like Opera and Phenomena by Argento and Blood on Satan’s Claw. Also need to give a nod to some recent shudder exclusives that haven’t received the acclaim they deserve due to being exclusives to a not-very-popular streaming service, like their take on La Llorona, and Impetigore and Violation (which I know we both love 😊). Movies that aren’t technically horror but are *definitely* horror: Fire Walk With Me/Lost Highway/Inland Empire all by Lynch, Cuties, Eyes Wide Shut, Uncut Gems and Dogtooth are the ones that first come to mind
@inframeout
@inframeout 2 жыл бұрын
All great picks for nebulous horrors (genre labels are hard and kind of reductively pointless). "Dogtooth" is one of those films that is either a comedy or a horror depending on what kind of humour I'm in when I'm watching it. Also - the only reason "Violation" wasn't on the list was because I sang it's praises so much last year!

@@inframeout yeah, it's a long story but the short version is they got kicked off twitter supposedly for sharing gross makeup effects and then they went on an alt right show to talk about it, and i wrote an article about how disappointing that was, and they basically sent their whole fanbase after me for it ever since I've heard a ton of stories about them doing a ton of not super great stuff (bullying, taking credit for things they didn't do, more harassment stuff), which sucks because i was a huge fan of theirs up until that point and american mary was the movie that pretty much got me interested in horror to begin with.
