Hey Gary. I love your channel, been a long time viewer. I got couple questions: 1. I’ve always used Excel, is Numbers worth switching from Excel? 2. Is 2019 MacBook Pro entry level worth buying now or wait for 2020?
@macmost4 жыл бұрын
Both are hard to answer because it depends on your situation, experience, budget, uses, etc. You have to decide for yourself as I don't have enough information to decide for you. Numbers is free, so why not play around with it and determine whether you want to use it for some things. I love Numbers, but if you have years of experience with Excel, you may want to stick with that. As for the MacBook, it depends how badly you need it right now.
@Wordsmiths4 жыл бұрын
dellhpfree : Gary is right at each point. Excel and Numbers are productivity tools more than they are performance-art tools: stick with whichever one you have mastered. Or invest the time to master whichever one feels more intuitive to you, if you're still a beginner. (If you were comparing PowerPoint and Keynote, I would suggest switching to Keynote: cf. Alex Lindsay's experiences in high-production-value webcasts etc.) And with the MacBook Pro, it really depends on what features you need for your business, what crap you're dealing with right now with your current laptop (and how long you can realistically hold on), and what your capital investment budget looks like. I seriously considered a 2019 MacBook Pro, decided I couldn't wait for the 2020 model... and ended up getting a pimped-out 2015 MacBook Pro instead. It has all the ports I use with the other gear I already own, and acceptable performance for what I need to do with it, and 3 TB of storage is plenty for me... but it isn't "entry level" for any MacBook Pro. Just get what you need!

Hi thanks a lot for the great video. Can you make a comparison video between Microsoft Excel and Mac numbers?
@macmost4 жыл бұрын
The main difference is that Numbers gives you blank sheets where you can add tables, charts and other elements. So you can design sheets of connected tables and graphics. Excel is more powerful in crunching numbers, but that usually only comes into play if you are doing pro scientific or massive business applications.

Another vid to be saved. Thanks, Gary. Wonder f you can offer me a tip: I record all my prescriptions medications (doctor, meds name, DIN etc etc) and for the doctor and medication name I use pop-ups. Even 5 years I create a new table (as of 2020 I have a new table 2020-2025) but for the life of me I can't find a way to import the pop-up menu items thus I have to "rebuild" the list.

Did you try to simply copy and paste a single cell of the pop-up from the old table to the new one? It should bring the pop-up list over.

@macmost3 жыл бұрын
You can format tables any way you want. As for languages, you can type any text you want, but the spellcheck won't be very useful I would assume. Why not just try what you want to do and see?

Great videos; I've looked through a few of them!! Trying to learn how I can create a table for food preparation/cooking so that if I add a 'finish time' and have each food an allocated 'cooking time' how it would deduct and show what time to go in? It does not seem to allow for 60min format and therefore setting at time of 17:00 (for example) and an 80min oven just offers 16:20 instead of 15:40. Make sense?
@macmost3 жыл бұрын
Durations would look like this: 60m You can subtract a duration from a time. So if cell B2 held 16:00 and cell C2 held 50m and you calculated =B2-C2 you would get 15:10 as a result.

@macmostvideo thanks for the amazing content on numbers, In addition to what you taught, just wanted to know if I have four items in column A(pop menu is great) and if all four items have different sub menus in column B, is there a provision for it? Like for eg, if I select Fiction Books in column A, in column B I should get all the sub pop menu of fiction books feeded and so on... Looking forward to your response.

Hi I run a picture frame business and have been working on building an inventory file on Numbers. I am stuck trying to figure out what kind of formula would let me enter individual cuts (moulding used each day categorized by item number) and keep track of the following things: daily average use of each moulding, weekly use, monthly use to keep track of what the most popular choices are & better regulate our ordering process. I hope you have some feedback as to how I can accomplish this. My first thought was to create a mirror sheet (using copying formulas) of the raw inventory numbers (what we have in stock) and connecting those to a sheet where I input the daily cuts and use formulas on another sheet to calculate weekly/monthly/ etc but the whole timeline aspect is throwing me for a loop.
@tstroope13 жыл бұрын
very informative - is there a way to lock (only) certain cells. We are using the table for ‘notes to file’ and want to prevent previous notes from accidentally being erased (yes, it has happened) by other users

No. So design your document to use unlocked data in unlocked tables and locked data in locked tables.

Hello Gary. Thank you very much for your useful video on Numbers. Is numbers file fully compatible with Microsoft excel?
@macmost4 жыл бұрын
No. The files themselves are different format. You can "import" Excel format into Numbers and "export" from Numbers to Excel format, but these are not the same apps. They have different capabilities. For instance, Numbers uses Tables inside of Sheets whereas Excel just has sheets filled with cells.

Have you, or will you, do a video on setting up a apreadsheet for accounting (double entry)? It may be necessary to copy information from a General Transaction Journal to a specific Ledger Account (a different sheet?)
@macmost4 жыл бұрын
I've never done that. Not sure what aspect of double-entry you are trying to do, but you wouldn't want to have your data in more than one table. So a large table where you have two rows for each item, one recording the debit and the other the credit. Usually you would use accounting software for this, but I guess you can simulate parts of it in a spreadsheet if you really wanted to.
@i2iwithhorses4 жыл бұрын
@@macmost The current accounting programs want to charge monthly or other fees and store info on the cloud. For my small business the cost is prohibitive. I am looking for a low-cost, one-and-done purchase of a program. It is easy to create a general journal (transaction register) on a spread sheet. I am wondering if a new sheet in the same file can be set up with categories which can pull information from the transaction sheet. The categories sheet would be the General Ledger of accounts. Is this possible?

Hi Gary, could you please advice how to change the text alignment position to degree 180 ?
@Mheprai2 жыл бұрын
This cannot be done in Numbers. The only answer is to go to INSERT > and create a text box. You can lock the text box in place but it will not move with a dynamic chart. It's crazy that apple has not solved this as yet when in fact it used to be a function in early versions of this app.
