Do you have a video that shows beginners how to use colors, types of text, and other options in formatting in Numbers, such as highlighting, gradients, text colors, etc? If not, would you please make one that explains each step? (I haven't figured out how to get rid of a gradient in a text cell..) Thank you!

Hi I run a picture frame business and have been working on building an inventory file on Numbers. I am stuck trying to figure out what kind of formula would let me enter individual cuts (moulding used each day categorized by item number) and keep track of the following things: daily average use of each moulding, weekly use, monthly use to keep track of what the most popular choices are & better regulate our ordering process. I hope you have some feedback as to how I can accomplish this. My first thought was to create a mirror sheet (using copying formulas) of the raw inventory numbers (what we have in stock) and connecting those to a sheet where I input the daily cuts and use formulas on another sheet to calculate weekly/monthly/ etc but the whole timeline aspect is throwing me for a loop.

Great videos; I've looked through a few of them!! Trying to learn how I can create a table for food preparation/cooking so that if I add a 'finish time' and have each food an allocated 'cooking time' how it would deduct and show what time to go in? It does not seem to allow for 60min format and therefore setting at time of 17:00 (for example) and an 80min oven just offers 16:20 instead of 15:40. Make sense?
@macmost
@macmost 3 жыл бұрын
Durations would look like this: 60m You can subtract a duration from a time. So if cell B2 held 16:00 and cell C2 held 50m and you calculated =B2-C2 you would get 15:10 as a result.

Hey Gary. I love your channel, been a long time viewer. I got couple questions: 1. I’ve always used Excel, is Numbers worth switching from Excel? 2. Is 2019 MacBook Pro entry level worth buying now or wait for 2020?
@macmost
@macmost 4 жыл бұрын
Both are hard to answer because it depends on your situation, experience, budget, uses, etc. You have to decide for yourself as I don't have enough information to decide for you. Numbers is free, so why not play around with it and determine whether you want to use it for some things. I love Numbers, but if you have years of experience with Excel, you may want to stick with that. As for the MacBook, it depends how badly you need it right now.
@Wordsmiths
@Wordsmiths 4 жыл бұрын
dellhpfree : Gary is right at each point. Excel and Numbers are productivity tools more than they are performance-art tools: stick with whichever one you have mastered. Or invest the time to master whichever one feels more intuitive to you, if you're still a beginner. (If you were comparing PowerPoint and Keynote, I would suggest switching to Keynote: cf. Alex Lindsay's experiences in high-production-value webcasts etc.) And with the MacBook Pro, it really depends on what features you need for your business, what crap you're dealing with right now with your current laptop (and how long you can realistically hold on), and what your capital investment budget looks like. I seriously considered a 2019 MacBook Pro, decided I couldn't wait for the 2020 model... and ended up getting a pimped-out 2015 MacBook Pro instead. It has all the ports I use with the other gear I already own, and acceptable performance for what I need to do with it, and 3 TB of storage is plenty for me... but it isn't "entry level" for any MacBook Pro. Just get what you need!

Thanks so much for these videos. I have been watching a few different ones but can't seem to get my question answered so I will ask you directly. If I have a large table of data that is often being re-sorted but different columns. While at the same time have a separate tab with formulas that pull data from the initial large table. What happens is every time a different column is sorted all my formulas become useless because they are now pulling data from the wrong cells. They will still pull from B,7 rather then from the cell I initially selected. How is it I can lock onto a particular cell in a row and have it stay locked on that cell even when the table is re-arranged or sorted by a different column? Thank you so much in advance and keep up the good work!
@macmost
@macmost 2 жыл бұрын
So usually a table is a collection of similar data, like records in a database. What is special about those cells, like B7, that you want that row specifically? Maybe if I understood what you were actually doing I could suggest something.
@kylei.3590
@kylei.3590 2 жыл бұрын
@@macmost Okay so I am doing large compilations of data on companies for reference and investment reasons. There will be approximately 30 data points and at the end a final score in 4 different categories. I sometimes like to adjust different columns of data to see how results would change in different hypothetical situations such as an interest rate hike etc. When I make these adjustments it slightly effects the scores of these companies and they become sorted slightly differently. At the same time I have a second tab that pulls data on these companies stock price changes. This second tab pulls the stock price changes from selected stocks and compares it to the overall averages of the market. Therefore when i make subtle changes to the data and re-sort the data my second tab pulls data from the wrong stocks now. This is because it is still pulling from cell (d,4) instead of sticking to company 'abc'. Basically the cell I am pulling data from is not locked to that particular row that company 'abc' is in but rather from which next company occupies that row in position 4. Does this make sense to you? I want to be able to create a formula from a different tab that pulls particularly from the data in the row for company 'abc' no matter how I decided to sort my data by any given column.
@macmost
@macmost 2 жыл бұрын
@@kylei.3590 Ah, I see. Use LOOKUP then. It will grab the data from the row that matches (the stock symbol, I assume) and it won't rely on the actual row number to do it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH68eX5re7-IoLc

This cannot be done in Numbers. The only answer is to go to INSERT > and create a text box. You can lock the text box in place but it will not move with a dynamic chart. It's crazy that apple has not solved this as yet when in fact it used to be a function in early versions of this app.

Why can you not right-click on a cell in Numbers and just add a hyperlink to a file on your hard disk, just like you can do in Excel?? In Excel (even in a very old 2011 version..) I can just right click on a cell, and add a hyperlink to a file anywhere on my disk (and if it's a video, for example, the video files is opened with VLC player which is the default player I have selected to open videos. Simple.). Is it possible that in the year 2020 Numbers is still so far behind Excel?? Or is this function "hidden" somewhere Numbers and I just can't find it??

Do you mean extract "title" and "another title"? You could use FIND to find the first space and then MID to get the characters from that point on. Or, if you know how to use REGEX you could use the REGEX.EXTRACT function to do it.
