I spent over 15 years living in California, the last ten of which were in the Bay area. When I arrived for a job in the games industry, I continued taking first aid and preparedness courses that I had started as kid w Boy Scouts & Red Cross. I particularly recommend the Red Cross "Wilderness Emergency Response" because it's pretty comprehensive. It was developed for people trekking in the backcountry who might be days away from any regular Emergency Medical facility. You end up with five or six certifications, if you attend all the sessions and do your homework. But the main point is that you want to be able to help your own family and neighbors, when some disaster hits and you know you are on your own for a week or longer. If you've never had ANY first aid training, you might want to start with something more basic -- a Good starting point might be the C.E.R.T. training - Community Emergency Response Team - It's Solid skills training, very practical... And either class will acquaint you with some of the other folks in your community who are also serious about being prepared for disasters.

I just heard an expert talking about this yesterday, and my intuition agrees. There is a lot of water and oil drainage occurring that is alleviating pressure on the tectonic plates. This may be easing their tension, creating a slower, more moderate release of their energy and movement. I think we can all agree that it would be preferable to have a lot of small to medium quakes than the "big one." This is very possible, since evolution never stops. We are leaving behind many old cycles, while new ones taking their place during this time. Perhaps this is one of them. Everything changes. Nothing stays the same. The scientists don't like it, since it destroys their "timetable." We all need to adapt and go with the flow, as the old, corny but true saying goes.

"The Big One" is a myth that was created as a scare tactic. In reality, there are many "Big Ones" - not just one, and yet people continue to talk about it as if it is a singular event, as that scares more people. Northridge was a big one, Loma Prieta was a big one, and 1906 was a really big one. The southern part of the San Andreas Fault is much less active and less dangerous than the northern part because it is fragmented, especially as it approaches Palm Springs. Los Angeles is sitting on a maze of much smaller fault lines, but they have much more potential to do damage to L.A. than the San Andreas Fault does because the SAF is so far away from L.A. That is not the case with San Francisco, however.
@r.pres.412119 күн бұрын
Both San Francisco and San Jose sit right next to the San Andreas Fault making it a bigger worry for both cities.
Cajon="ca-hone". You did better than most though. Also, the Cajon pass is way south of where you have it. It's near San Bernardino and separates the San Bernardino Mts from the San Gabriel Mts. I was in the San Fernando Valley for the Northridge quake. On the third floor. Next to a large window. I had to lock my arms and feet through the foot/headboards to not be thrown out the window. But, it mainly shot straight up, then dropped sharply. Probably because we were 6 miles from the fault. The fridge was about two feet away from the wall. Everything inside it was dumped on the floor. The whole place was trashed. I moved to the beach immediately. Couldn’t stand the aftershocks! At the time, it was compared to the Big One. But it was on an unknown fault. It was also close to the surface, if I recall correctly. Who knows how much stress it released? There’s been a number of large quakes in the socal region. They act like there’s been nothing. Maybe they weren’t on the San Andreas directly. That doesn’t mean stress hasn’t been released. Besides, Northridge didn’t flatten the entirety of the city. If and when the Big One hits, the damage predicted may be overblown. Especially if you are comparing it to San Francisco. That’s a 7 mile, by 7 mile, area. Of course it’s devastating for such a tiny, old area.
