In this powerful documentary, Jaha shares her deeply personal journey from being a survivor of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and forced marriage to becoming a global advocate for women’s rights. Born in The Gambia, Jaha was subjected to FGM as a baby, and at 15, was forced to marry an older man in the United States. Her story unfolds as she realizes the devastating impact of FGM on her body and her life, leading her to fight for the protection of girls and women from this harmful practice.
Jaha returns to The Gambia with a mission: to challenge deeply rooted traditions and to spark a national conversation about FGM, a practice that has affected nearly every woman in her country. As she navigates resistance from her own family and community, Jaha takes on religious leaders and cultural norms, determined to create change. This documentary sheds light on the strength it takes to confront long-held beliefs and push for the rights of women and girls.
Through her activism, Jaha empowers a new generation of women and men to speak out against FGM, showing how one voice can lead to a national movement. This is a story of resilience, hope, and the fight for a future where no girl has to experience what Jaha went through. Follow her emotional journey as she challenges traditions, overcomes obstacles, and inspires a global audience to join her in ending FGM for good.

That lady said the baby's head won't fit unless the mother is circumcised! Oh my gosh they need education! This is barbaric! I admire this lady for being brave and speaking out. God bless her🙏🏻💜

Agreed.. it just shows how just because something is a tradition doesn't mean it's good for every generation or anyone at all for that fact. One of the worst ideas worldwide that humans have is, It's always been this way. Why change it

I'm a nurse in Canada, and one of my dreams in my career is to join Doctors Without Borders. I read about women in remote parts of Africa who are mutilated as children, and then it's common for them to be married and become pregnant very young. Because of both FGM and their small bodies, childbirth is extremely difficult and it's common for mother or baby to die or suffer a life-altering injury during the birth. In hospital in the Western world, it is common for women to suffer tearing during childbirth even under ideal circumstances. But here, these tears are quickly sutured and generally heal without issue. In rural Africa, these tears go unrepaired, leading to infection and the wound getting worse over time. Some women have deep tearing from childbirth that make it difficult to hold their urine or bowels, and causes them great embarrassment and isolation. Ever since I read about these womens suffering, it made me want to do something about it. When I pay off my student loans in some years, I want to join a Doctors Without Borders mission to help these women.

I’m an Egyptian and actually there are still some people do that to their kids around age of 9-12 years old. Thank God my mamma didn’t agree to do it to me or my sister although that she got it and my aunt -my mother’s sister- did it to one of her 4 daughters 😢 My cousin is suffering until today from this traumatic experience as well as lots of my female colleagues at work 💔 I really hope that stops already.

@Twinklingstar1203 I am an English white lady and I hug every one of you who escaped that trauma and every lady who escapes the beating. I still enjoy cooking for my husband and son at home as they are both disabled. But I have family members who have different circumstances and the roles are totally reversed and gender never comes into it. Love is love and we care for those we totally love xx

It’s about control, about men being sure they are the only ones sleeping with their women. It’s a very sad injustice rooted in patriarchy, that uses lack of education or understanding of their own bodies against them. I really hope my people get a hold of more information so they can stand for themselves.

Bless her, but l don't think she's going to change their minds. It's going to take a couple of generations. Her talking to the young woman hopefully will open their minds so they wouldn't want this practice carried out on their daughters Forced marriage in the Gambia is different from the US. Here it is a crime. To cope with US culture and being a wife at 15 must have been overwhelming

Oddly enough all of my sister in laws had this done. It was in Egypt and she was born in the later 80's. Thankfully none of my nieces had this done. Sadly you can still have it done without medical supervision, boys and girls, no consent and in a back street witchdoctor like place with a reused razor blade containing heaven knows how many diseases and plenty that haven't even been discovered yet.😮 Sorry I should have warned you I'd probably end up in a tangent.

And this is one of the BIGGEST issues I have with religion. Just because some book made (and translated and rewritten how many times) says something so we should just follow no matter how horrifying and disgusting the practice is. That's why education is so important, it gives people way more to think about then what any religion says.

Hello everyone, i see in the comments section those blaming islam ,this has nothing to with islam it more so in old pagan traditions perserved by some cultures in fact islam protects the rights of daughters and woman so please don't insinuate your uneducated view on islam beaides what you were told in movies and media. That being said i speak from first hand in thia situation so dont come for me instead be kind and mindful of what you type.
