I have mentioned this before: I am not an expert but I have learnt that water that reaches the walls from the outside and cannot come in, will go up, and can cause moisture issues in that part of the house. You could dig a french drain around the house to prevent he water from going in. Otherwise, the dip in the floor that you dug out at the end, might have been where they let the incoming water get collected... Also: you don't seem to have guttering on your roof. Could it help to put up some gutters and lead the rain water further away from the foundation (and basement walls? It must get very wet there when it rains!

What a mother and brother. Get stuck in to help when you need it and still smile! Love it when your mum visits and this time your brother too. Devid and you have worked so hard with the cellar and the extension. Having supportive family around you must make such a difference. Well done to you all.

My experience is that with old houses with those kind of walls, you can't completely "waterproof" them. Use the small square hole to install a simple sump pumpin the floor to remove water that infiltrates through the walls. Don't push stuff uptight aagainst the walls that might get damp and deteriorate. How do I know this, because a large part of my basement, the "cellar' part where we store canned food is pretty much like what you guys have. Your family were troopers in helping you out with that very challenging job. Cheers to all.

agreed. you do not want condensation on your jars, shelving or wood, keep a few inches away. Someone mentioned a sump pump but that would require a trentch around the entire perimeter of the lower level, not idea in this case

Do you know if you have french drains around the perimeter outside? I'm sure no one wants to dig more dirt!! But one of the best ways to keep a basement dry is to keep water away before it gets to the walls

Have you considered a sump pump in the lowest part of the floor to pump out any water that might come in? It smells but you could put some tar membrane on the walls too. Gutters with long downspouts is a must too. You get the golden shovel award for all your hard work.

Had a neighbor once with an old basement like that. Wet caused mold issues and nothing worked until they dug all the way down on the outside of the house and installed a rubber membrane, then backfilled. Also added a 6 inch gutter and downspouts with black corrugated tile to even more direct water away from the house.

I was totally amazed at the amount of dirt in the basement. I would suggest asking your neighbors what they have done to waterproof their basement. They have been living in this area for many years and also store their crops they grow each year. I know my grandma had wooden slat shelves in her basement so that her root crops never touched the floors or the walls. I never thought to ask why but now I think I know why. To keep moisture from getting to the vegetables.
@billyinwaves
@billyinwaves Жыл бұрын
This is a great new room for storage, especially for potatoes or as a root cellar etc. To avoid damp you either try and seal the moisture out - with a tanking system - or you do what you can with drainage and then keep the room well ventilated. You could tank it with a paint-on rubber/bitumen membrane or, if you want the room completely dry, then fibre glass the walls and floor.

There is a company that takes a lazar print of a basement the makes rubber type liner for the hole you just cleaned out it is a moisture barrier to keep that area dry. It is attached to the floor above. Like someone else said a French drain is the best way to move moisture away from any building.. Nice work everyone!🇨🇦💪💐

For the stone/brick walls I recommend using lime mortar for it than regular concrete mortar. Because it will damage the stones and bricks because there needs to be away for moisture to get out and for the stones to breathe. As of water proofing goes I’m not sure of what can be done for the walls without further damaging it. But there could be something out there that won’t damage it as much, but I could be wrong. Thank god there was a floor underneath the dirt or that would have been quite expensive to put in a new cellar floor,
@DoBeDiff
@DoBeDiff Жыл бұрын
Yeah it would be great to do it naturally but in this case I can't think or find anything that wouldn't be chemical based and would let it breathe so we will have to use rubber based sealant to prevent the moisture! In the old days they would just keep up with removing the water daily or weekly depending on the build up rate no easier solution back then now we can seal it to be dry the walls will be exposed on the outside so I think they will be fine!

most of our 100+ year old homes in MN are limestone and lime mortar. Good suggestion. We had a home where they poured regular cement only between the floor joists! that house was well over 115 years and the floors still level, windows- on a curved bowed 14' wall were still straight/ plumb and nothing hand shifted...all the way to the foundation was solid as a rock.

Great job on your basement! That's a lot of work. It is deep enough. If you want to one day in a few years you can always dig more, but you may find it is good enough. My parents' concrete walled basement used to have water leaking into it. They painted the walls w/ a water sealer product & it hasn't leaked since. Having the soil surrounding the house sloped slightly away from the house & having good gutters & downspout leading water away from the house also is very helpful. If you still get a lot of water in it after a big rainstorm, despite all you do, you can still pump out the water as long as the hose is long enough to lead the water far from the house. Your shelving can be put on concrete blocks to keep your food dry. Put the pump in the hole you dug.
@bfox5767
@bfox5767 Жыл бұрын
I just read a few replies to other people & it seems you are already planning to use a water sealer for basements. Also, I didn't realize that the floor is already concreted. It doesn't seem worth it to jackhammer the concrete to gain a few more inches in a root cellar, especially since you might have to add more to the bottom of the walls. It sounds like you have a great plan.

As for the French drain thought, As long as you have one side to drain out of , it does not have to be all the way around the house, for that basement Having a french drain outlet would be really important . Again, it is always best to do things the righ way in the first place.

That's some hard work. You have good fam 😎👍 It looks like you have room to raise that beam. Add stone/brick and mortar under it. Create a step up for the upper room. Would that lower the upper room too much? You will have to put a water barrier in that basement. I have a feeling they filled it in due to water. Have you read up on basement prep?

It’s so nice of your mom (in law) and brother (in law) to help you out with such a crappy job. ❤️ I was wondering because I’ve seen this in an elderly couple’s home, is it possible that the square you dug out in the basement was at some point a well and it got filled with dirt? PS as for waterproofing of course membrane but if you have to first repipe the stones in the walls maybe mix some linseed oil in the mortar (it’s an ancient Roman technique used in public baths and aqueducts to waterproof).
