Our 2005 Five Hundred did the same thing. All I did was sprayed the joints with penetrating oil and it freed up. Then at every oil change I would spray the joints.
@FordBossMe3 жыл бұрын
That can definitely buy you some time but that's not a repair that's just babying the problem along As other people have said here they do that in the beginning but over time it starts to wear the joint because all that material still stays inside
@rickykraus74503 жыл бұрын
I realize that. It has worked for about 3 years now but the car is no longer on the road. On my 2007 F150 I spray it at every oil change in hopes it never does that. If it will work? IDK?

Had to change mine on the 2004 TownCar, not sure but at the time the warranty only covered 2005 to 2011 Panthers, got insane pricing both online and at local part stores. Went to the local small town Ford dealer, sadly they retired and closed down now and asked about it and warranty commenting about the new cars coverage. Got a call the next day, another dealer magically found one for $70. I don't mind paying for parts but $800+ for what should be a sub $100 part...

Similar thing happened to my crown vic, same symptom except only thing was mine was because the exhaust heat shield had rusted out and wedged it self with the steering linkage.

@@FordBossMe literally that whole year 2004 of those 3 valves when they came out are considered lemons to most. I know most people stay away from 2004 f150s
@shaneclark53 жыл бұрын
A lot of times this is caused by a lack of sufficient splash shields in the wheelwell and salt and water constantly bathing the steering shaft and adjacent items including the exhaust manifolds. It literally destroys everything it splashes on especially vehicles that are operated in road salt.

Great video ! one suggestion for the D I Y R's disconnect the battery , wait 5 minutes to disarm the airbags " yup seen it happen " . Because most steering wheel are not balanced and have a heavy side and will roll when the shaft has been disconnected use the driver's seat belt to keep the steering wheel as close to centered as possible and save your clock spring . This same problem happens on a lot of the G M fleet as well and for the most part the same years as on the Fords .

That universal was a lot easier to replace on my daughter's '12 Escape since there was only one joint. Ford dealer wanted $550 ($110 for the part & the rest labor) to replace it. Took me 45 minutes to do it for only $68.

@@tooltime4640 There was no diag charge. Most dealers & shops in my area don't charge diag for brake & suspension. They specifically told me it was a 2 hour labor charge. I told the car there for an alignment & that's when they said the joint was bad.

Had that problem with my 2004 F150. when it was 10 years old. You would think by now, Ford would have recognized this as a weakness and re engineered it.
@alanfravel69743 жыл бұрын
I’ve had that problem on my 2007 F150 for about 5-6 years instead of replacing it when it first started I soaked both joints with Sea Foam Deep Creep and worked the wheel back and forth and it started to free up so I took it for a drive and after a few miles it felt like it never happened and as an extra precautionary measure I coated the joints with lithium grease to help with water intrusion into the joint and I’ve been doing that procedure about once a year and still running on the original steering shaft I recommend this to all of the suv and truck owners because of the shaft being to exposed to the elements causing it to be a failure prone part I hope it helps others because as you said it’s a difficult and pricey job

I had the same issue in my 09 f150 with 180k miles. Lithium grease helped for a month. Then the steering became wobbly. Replaced that part with an oem. That part is expensive. Sad thing is that Ford has a 2 yr warranty on these parts. Had to replace it again because it was starting to bind.

They have WD40 rust degrader, but generally PB Blaster is the goto. At home you have more time to work on rusty parts. Can try spraying the universal joints (PB blaster then maybe WD40 gel, lithium grease etc) to see if they can move better. Love the Lincoln Navigators (Ford Expedition) with the 6speed. Generally people take care of them and the ride is pretty plush -same for most Lincoln vehicles. Only about 5% of Ford sales are Lincoln.

I had one of these go bad in my 2010 Flex. I was relieved when I found out it was NOT the stearing rack. It was a pain to do this job but I did it from inside the car... Yes inside. That satisfying CLUNK sound when the shaft finally engaged the rack... I may have to do this again in another 4 years.
