2000 Breeders' Cup Classic - Tiznow + Post Race & Interviews

It all came crashing down today for Fusaichi Pegasus when the flying horse did little flying and finished sixth in his farewell performance while Tiznow was edging out Giant's Causeway by a neck to win the $4.7 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
Fusaichi Pegasus, bought as a yearling for $4 million and syndicated as a 3-year-old for $60 million, also threw the contest for Horse of the Year into confusion. So did Lemon Drop Kid, his main rival for the title and the winner of four straight graded stakes this year, who ran fifth in the final appearance of his career.
The two stars of thoroughbred racing had empty endings to their careers on the track at Churchill Downs, where Fusaichi Pegasus won the Kentucky Derby last May. In eight races before today's rich Classic, he had finished first six times and second twice. So, his loss at odds of 6-5 came as a shock to the crowd of 76,043 on this cloudy and chilly afternoon.

It's always great to see a little-known horse beat all of the big-money marquee horses in the biggest horse race of the year, at Churchill Downs, and especially adding in the fact that Tiznow won the BC Classic two years in a row!

Tiznow trainer Jay Robbins told a story about phoning a friend of his that trained in Europe to get some insight on Giant's Causeway before the Classic. Robbins said his friend insisted they not let Giant's Causeway get to the lead, because if he did, he would never allow Tiznow to pass him. A great piece of free advice. That was Giant's Causeway's MO in Europe. Horses came at him hard late in races time and again and he refused to let them pass him. Hence, the nickname "The Iron Horse" was born

the greatest cal-bred of all time!... to go back to back in the classic(the following year)...i don't think any horse has achieved back to back in the classic...so many times when i've seen horses get caught in the stretch, they go right on by... but not this time and not in a race of this class...he's truly a special one who's cemented his place in history...epic performance!

Tiznow was a brat. But he had incredible talent, and incredible heart. This race, along with the next year's incarnation of the Classic, cement him as a legendary colt.

2000 BCC all but 3 of the ponies in this race, are decedents of Northern Dancer The three that are not are the late finishing positions 9,11&13th. With Northern Dancer stud fees of a high as $1million dollars without a guarantee of a live birth. Unheard of even today, 30 years later. The 'Dancer "The WORLD'S Sire of Sires!!!

Both Tiznow and Giant Causeway are descendants of Bold Ruler. Tiznow through Seattle Slew line and Giant Causeway through Storm Cat who was Secretariat's grandsire.Giant Causeway was a great champion and sire based overseas.

Storm Cat was not Secretariat's grandsire, he was born well after Secretariat. Rather Secretariat is Storm Cat's Damsire. (Storm Cat's Grandsire is Northern Dancer). Giant's Causeway is still alive and he stands at Ashford Stud (Coolmore America) in KY, same farm as American Pharoah.

Storm Cat descends through Northern Dancer who was sired by Nearctic who called Nearco 'pappy.' Bold Ruler was sired by Nasrullah who also called Nearco 'pappy.' Nearco was 14 for 14 racing in Italy for the legendary Federico Tesio and is arguably the greatest sire in history. Northern Dancer dominated as a sire for 20 years; Slew descends through Bold Ruler and was a dominant sire for 15-20 years and his offspring are also superior sires. Bold Ruler's influence is also indisputable. Nasrullah speed is also legendary and his influence is very broad through many sons. Nearco was the guy. The original "Italian Stallion."

Interesting. NBC used the Randy Edelman theme for the movie Gettysburg for the breeder's cup from 1994 through 1997 and in 2000 as seen here. In 1998 and 1999, they had a different theme I do not know what it was. It looks like they decided to bring back Gettysburg theme for 2000 Breeders Cup after an absence in 1998 and 1999. Then in 2001 and ahead, totally different theme from Gettysburg and the 1998 and 1999 theme.

I worked in ballydoyle from 1998 to 2002 ..I did work with best horses in the world at that time ..the likes of gallieo. Istabraq. Joannsberg. Rock of gibaltar. Imagine.hawk wing .the list just goes on .....giantscauseway. was my favourite I mucked the giant out ..he was beaten fair and square no excuse that's racing ..the giant would fight and die for ya ..great ..both would .great champions xx

He was a great champion. I don't think this race diminished him at all. Just the opposite. I don't get all the nationalism when it comes to horse racing. Giants Causeway is American bred really. Ballydoyle are geniuses, they have raided American speed & classic distance talent. To mix with their already deep and diversified stock they have shows the vision for the future O'Brien's always had. From all accounts, American Pharaoh's been gangbusters so far. Now, can they race??? Always the big question.

The story actually came from the the owner Micheal L. Cooper, but the rest is correct. Giant's Causeway in 2000 and Sakhee in 2001 both ran very well, but when you look at their pedigrees it is no mystery why they were sent to the Breeders Cup Classic, both were very North American going back for generations.

It catches my attention the fact that Chris McCarron (1955- ) aged so much in a few years (8:48) Bill Shoemaker (1931-2003) was a jockey for almost 41 years and when he withdrew in February 1990, his face looked like a person who lived well his 59 years-old he had then. Shane Sellers, Richard Migliore, Jose Santos and Jerry Bailey also look a good appearance years after their retirement. Greetinngs from Venezuela.

Dubai Millennium DIDN'T run here. He died of grass sickness after only one year at stud. Won 9 of 10.

gary moore you could be right, but Giants Causeway was classed as the IRON HORSE in European - check his form out and how he would win and the distances he would win. both were monsters but GC actually went past Tiznow for a brief moment IF Kinane did have his whip he would of won going away - also don't forget GC also had a wide draw and a wide trip - i've no doubt that GC would of won this race both great horses

Tiznow was tough don't get me wrong he deserves a lot of credit but Giants was drawn wide - first time on dirt and was a horse who was notorious for idling and doing no more than asked He ranged up side to have a go and Kinane dropped one rein, got his whip in a fumble and then proceeded to drop it I have no doubt the best horse on the day lost - it's just my own personal opinion - you talk about courage Giants causeways nickname was the iron horse! For his ability to win tight finishes and his iron will He lost that race because of a pilot error

Even the americans know giants was going to win. Then the nasty americans with the sonic gun binoculars had to cheat giants out of the race. It was a great race, but if america had no sonic gun binoculars, giants causeway would of taken down your champion horse that day. Americans cannot take real competition. lol
